Keep fresh water and shade available, give your cat access to a cool, ventilated indoor space, and limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. Panting is unusual in cats: if your cat pants, drools, vomits, seems confused or weak, or collapses, treat it as a possible heatstroke emergency. Move them somewhere cool, gently wet their coat with cool or lukewarm water, and contact a veterinarian immediately.
How to keep your cat comfortable in hot weather
Cats often respond to warmth by seeking shade, resting on cool surfaces, and grooming. As saliva evaporates from their coat, it can help them cool down. You can support these natural behaviors by making cool resting places easy to reach and letting your cat choose where to settle.

Provide water and shade
- Keep fresh water available at all times. If your cat goes outside, provide water there too, and consider placing more than one water bowl around the home.
- A drinking fountain may encourage some cats to drink more, but it is optional. Choose a setup your cat will use, keep it clean, and leave fresh water available if the fountain is switched off. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine notes that running water may prompt some cats to drink more.
- Offer shaded places outdoors, such as natural shade or a sheltered spot, and make sure your cat can come back inside.
Make a cooler indoor retreat
- When extreme heat is forecast, keep your cat indoors in an air-conditioned area if possible. There is no single indoor temperature threshold established here as safe for every cat, so pay attention to conditions and your cat’s behavior.
- Close blinds or curtains during the day to reduce direct sun, and use a floor or ceiling fan to maintain airflow. Make sure your cat can move away from the fan or any cooling surface.
- Offer a cool, soft place to rest. Natural grass or soil may feel cooler outdoors; indoors, a cooling mat or a towel-wrapped frozen bottle placed near a sleeping spot can be an optional comfort. Do not put a frozen bottle directly against your cat or force them to stay near it.
- Ice cubes can be offered as a play activity. Let your cat decide whether to engage.
Adjust outdoor time and grooming
- Keep your cat indoors during the warmest part of the day when possible. If they go out, favor cooler morning or evening hours and ensure shade and water are available.
- Check sheds, garages, greenhouses, barns, conservatories, and similar spaces so a cat cannot become trapped in a hot enclosed area.
- Never leave a cat in a parked car, even in the shade or with the windows cracked.
- Maintain a summer grooming routine to help shed excess hair. Cats groom themselves as part of their normal cooling behavior, so do not assume that shaving is necessary.
Are cooling mats, fountains, or sunscreen useful?
These can help with specific comfort or care needs, but none is a treatment for suspected heatstroke.

Cooling mats
A cooling mat can be an optional resting surface. Let your cat choose whether to use it, and check the size, cleaning instructions, materials, and manufacturer’s use guidance before buying. The cited veterinary guidance recommends cooling mats but does not establish that a particular type or brand cools better than another.

Water fountains
A fountain is worth considering if your cat seems more interested in running water. Whether it helps depends on the individual cat; maintain it as directed and keep another source of fresh water available.
Pet-safe sunscreen
For light-colored cats, Cornell recommends pet-safe sunscreen on vulnerable areas such as the tips of the ears and the nose to help prevent skin cancer. Use a product intended to be safe for pets and follow its directions.

How to recognize overheating or heatstroke
Panting is not a normal response to heat for cats. It can signal that a cat is dangerously hot, especially when accompanied by other changes. Watch for:

- Excessive panting or fast breathing
- Drooling or dribbling
- Restlessness or confusion
- Weakness or collapse
- Vomiting or diarrhea
Heatstroke can become life-threatening quickly. Do not wait to see whether symptoms pass on their own.

What to do if your cat may have heatstroke
- Move your cat out of the heat. Take them to a cool, safe, well-ventilated place.
- Begin gentle cooling. Gently wet the coat with cool or lukewarm water. Do not use freezing water or try to cool your cat abruptly; gradual cooling helps avoid additional stress.
- Contact a veterinarian immediately. Describe the symptoms and follow their instructions. Do not delay the call while waiting to see if cooling resolves the problem.
- Keep transport cool and ventilated. If you need to travel to a clinic, use a well-ventilated carrier and keep the car cool.
Which cats need especially close attention?
Some cats may be more vulnerable to hot conditions, including flat-faced cats, very young or older cats, overweight cats, and cats that become highly stressed in heat. Check on them closely, make sure they can reach water and a cooler area, and contact a veterinarian for advice if you are concerned about their health or ability to cope.
