To train your dog, make the behavior you want clear, mark it when it happens, and reward it with something your dog values. Practice in short, manageable sessions and adjust the surroundings so your dog can succeed. These ten techniques apply reward-based learning to everyday skills; they are not a guaranteed shortcut or treatment plan for serious behavior problems.

Why use reward-based training?

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends reward-based methods for dog training and behavior modification. Its 2021 humane-training statement remains its current position, with a 2025 clarification. AVSAB says: “Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that only reward-based methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems.” Read AVSAB’s position and clarification.

Reward-based training teaches a dog which action earns something worthwhile, rather than relying on aversive methods. For common concerns such as jumping, barking, or housetraining, management and reinforcement can help teach a more suitable response. AVSAB’s 2021 statement distinguishes everyday training from serious concerns that need individualized care.

How do I use positive reinforcement?

Positive reinforcement means adding something the dog values after a behavior, making that behavior more likely to happen again. A marker identifies the moment the dog got it right. You can use a clicker or a brief, consistent word such as “yes,” then follow it with a reward. The reward may be food, a toy, play, praise, or petting, depending on what motivates your dog in that setting. The American Kennel Club explains marking and reward.

10 techniques to build new habits

1. Choose one observable behavior

Describe what you want your dog to do in a way you can recognize. For a greeting, that might be keeping four paws on the floor. A clear replacement behavior gives the dog something specific to practice instead of leaving the goal at “stop jumping.”

2. Find a reward your dog values

Try food, a toy, play, praise, or petting. Notice what your dog is willing to work for in the situation you are training in; motivation can vary with the dog and the setting. AKC’s guide to clicker training describes these reward options.

  • Pupford Promise: We strive to always provide simple, high-quality, healthy pup essentials. If you or your pup aren't happy with a purchase, let us know so we can help find the right fit!

3. Mark the successful moment

As soon as your dog performs the behavior, use the same click or brief word each time. The marker tells the dog which moment earned the reward. Then deliver the reward so the marker is paired with something the dog wants.

4. Reward every correct response at first

When a behavior is new, reward each correct response. This makes the connection between the action and its consequence clearer than rewarding only some early attempts. AVSAB’s guidance on newly adopted dogs recommends rewarding every correct response initially. See AVSAB’s guidance on training and reinforcement.

5. Keep sessions short and upbeat

Work in brief sessions and finish while your dog is still able to engage. Patience, consistency, and making practice enjoyable help keep training workable. AKC’s basic training advice emphasizes short, positive sessions.

6. Make the right response easier

Set up practice so your dog can focus on the skill instead of struggling with competing distractions. Begin where the desired response is manageable, then make the situation more challenging as your dog succeeds. Environment changes are part of training, not a substitute for teaching.

7. Reinforce a useful alternative

For jumping, reward a calm greeting, such as standing with four paws on the floor. The dog learns what to do to earn attention, rather than receiving only a correction for the behavior you do not want. AVSAB discusses teaching desired behaviors alongside management for common concerns in its humane-training statement.

8. Manage the environment while the habit develops

Temporarily change access or surroundings to prevent unwanted behavior from being rehearsed and to make safe practice possible. For example, control access to a situation that triggers a behavior while you work on a more appropriate response. Choose the amount of management based on what your dog finds difficult.

9. Reduce rewards gradually once the behavior is reliable

Do not begin by withholding rewards from a dog still learning. As the response becomes reliable, reduce how often you deliver a reward gradually rather than stopping abruptly. AVSAB’s guidance describes this shift from rewarding every correct response to a reduced frequency.

10. Get qualified help when the concern is serious

Aggression, fear, and anxiety require more than a general habit-building list. AVSAB recommends an individualized treatment plan that can include environmental management and behavior modification, and in some cases medication. If progress feels unsafe or the problem is serious, consult a qualified veterinary or behavior professional. When choosing a trainer, look for someone who uses reward-based methods and appropriate motivators; AVSAB’s trainer-selection guidance can help.

Choosing a reward, marker, and practice setup

There is no universally best reward or marker. Choose according to what your dog responds to and how much the environment is competing with the lesson.

Training choice Options How to choose
Reward Food, toy, play, praise, or petting Use something your dog is motivated by in that setting.
Marker Clicker or brief verbal cue such as “yes” Choose one consistent signal that you can give at the right moment.
Practice environment Fewer or more competing triggers Adjust access and surroundings so the desired response is achievable and safe.

When everyday training is not enough

A short practice routine can help teach everyday skills, but it should not be treated as therapy for serious behavior concerns. AVSAB says aggression, anxiety, and fear call for a treatment plan that considers both the environment and behavior modification; medication may be appropriate in some cases. Seek individualized professional guidance rather than trying to resolve those concerns with a generic sequence of exercises. Read the AVSAB statement.
