Suspected heatstroke is an emergency: move your cat to a cooler place, begin gentle cooling with cool or lukewarm water and contact a veterinarian immediately.
There is no single temperature that is safe for every cat or home. Coat, age, body condition, health, humidity, airflow and access to shade all change the risk. The guidance below from Cornell Feline Health Center, Cats Protection and the American Veterinary Medical Association focuses on conditions and warning signs rather than a misleading thermometer cutoff.

Start with a hot-weather safety check
Before the day heats up, make the safe choice the easy choice. Check these basics every day during a heatwave or unusually warm spell:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Put clean, fresh water where your cat normally rests and add another station if the cat has outdoor access or more than one floor to use.
- Make sure there is shade outdoors and an unobstructed route back into a cooler indoor area.
- Keep a well-ventilated room available with more than one resting surface, so your cat can move between temperature zones.
- Plan play, exercise and travel for cooler periods; do not encourage vigorous activity in the hottest part of the day.
- Search sheds, garages, greenhouses, barns, utility rooms and other outbuildings before shutting doors.
- Never leave a cat unattended in a parked vehicle, even for a short errand or with the windows partly open.
- Know the emergency signs and have your veterinary clinic’s phone number ready.
Cats often seek shade and naturally reduce activity as conditions warm, but that behavior is not a guarantee of safety. A trapped, ill or vulnerable cat may not be able to escape heat on its own.

Keep water available and appealing
Use several water stations
Water should be available continuously, including for cats that spend time outside. Place bowls near favorite sleeping areas and along the route between indoors and outdoors. Multiple stations help if one bowl is knocked over, becomes dirty or is in a room the cat stops visiting. Refill with fresh water and wash the bowls regularly so heat, dust and hair do not make them unappealing.
Check every station during the day rather than relying on a morning refill. Outdoor bowls can become warm or contaminated, and a bowl in a closed room may be inaccessible if a door is shut. If another person is caring for your cat, show them every bowl and ask them to confirm that the cat can reach each one.
Consider a fountain, but keep bowls too
Some cats prefer moving water. Cornell notes that “Providing a running water source like a fountain may encourage some cats to drink more.” A fountain is an optional preference aid, not a requirement and not a substitute for ordinary fresh-water bowls. Introduce it while the old bowls remain available, check that your cat actually drinks from it, and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. A fountain that is empty, dirty or unplugged provides no hydration.

Choose a location where the cord cannot be chewed and where the unit cannot be tipped. During a power cut, equipment failure or travel, bowls must still provide water. Never assume that buying a fountain solves a cat’s reluctance to drink; observe what your individual cat chooses.
Create a cool place indoors
Offer choice rather than restraint
Set up a quiet, shaded, well-ventilated resting area away from direct sun. Leave doors open so your cat can move between cooler and warmer rooms and choose the surface that feels comfortable. Air conditioning can help during extreme heat when it is available, but do not shut a cat in a hot room while cooling another part of the home.
Give the cat more than one place to settle: a floor-level spot, a shaded bed and an area with safe airflow. Watch how sunlight moves through the home, because a room that is cool in the morning may become hot later. If you close curtains or blinds to block direct sun, keep ventilation and escape routes safe.
Use cooling aids only as comfort options
A cooling mat or an ice pack wrapped in a blanket can provide a cooler surface. Put it where the cat can investigate and leave it freely; never pin, hold or force a cat onto it. Check mats and wrapped packs for leaks, chewing damage or excessive cold. These products support comfort and do not treat overheating or heatstroke.
Place the aid in shade and leave enough clear floor for the cat to move away. Replace or remove it if the covering is wet, damaged or attracting chewing. A cat that ignores a mat is making a normal choice; do not place it underneath the cat or restrain the animal on it.

Keep airflow and ventilation safe
Ventilation matters, but an open window must have a secure screen and must not create an escape or fall route. Keep cords, fans and cooling equipment arranged so a curious cat cannot chew or become entangled. If a room becomes stuffy, move the cat to a cooler safe area rather than relying on a single device.
Check screens, doors and cooling equipment each day. A fan or air conditioner is useful only while it is working safely, and it does not replace water or access to a cooler area.
Manage outdoor time and activity
Provide shade with an escape route
Outdoor shade can come from trees, a stable umbrella or a sun sail. Shade must remain available as the sun moves, and the cat must be able to return to a cooler indoor space. A shaded patch beside a hot wall, concrete surface or enclosed structure may still become dangerously warm, so inspect it at different times of day.

Check that shade has not disappeared because of a moved umbrella, fallen branch or changing sunlight. If you cannot guarantee shade and a cool retreat, keep the cat inside during the hottest conditions.
Shift play to cooler hours
Avoid encouraging chasing, running or other strenuous play during the hottest part of the day and during a heatwave. Offer calm enrichment indoors instead, and let the cat stop voluntarily. Cats Protection advises that cats commonly seek shade and reduce activity as temperatures rise; respect that change rather than coaxing a cat to exercise.
Plan necessary travel and active handling for cooler periods. If your cat chooses to rest, do not interpret reduced activity as an invitation to stimulate more exercise. Observe breathing and behavior after any activity, and stop if the cat seems distressed.
Keep cats indoors during extreme heat when possible
If very hot weather is forecast, keep your cat in an air-conditioned or otherwise cool indoor area when you can. This removes risks such as hot pavement, locked outbuildings and unpredictable access to water. If your cat must go outside, provide a reliable route back inside and check frequently rather than assuming it will return before conditions worsen.
Eliminate heat traps
Inspect outbuildings before closing them
Sheds, garages, greenhouses, barns and similar spaces can heat rapidly and may have little ventilation. Cats can enter silently and be locked inside when a door is closed. Before securing any outbuilding, check corners, shelves, vehicles, boxes and machinery. Repeat the check after visitors, contractors or deliveries have opened doors.

Include utility rooms, storage areas and any structure that has been opened during the day. Ask children and visitors to tell you when a door has been left open or closed. A quick visual search is worthwhile even if your cat normally stays indoors.
Never use a parked car as a waiting place
Do not leave a cat unattended in a parked vehicle, even with windows cracked or the engine recently running. A car can become a heat trap quickly, and a pet cannot choose shade, water or better ventilation. Plan transport so the cat goes directly between a cool home and a cool, ventilated vehicle.
For a veterinary trip, prepare the carrier before bringing the cat out. Keep the vehicle cool, avoid stops that leave the cat alone and go directly to the clinic. Cracked windows do not make unattended parking safe.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Give higher-risk cats extra protection
Some cats need a lower threshold for precaution and earlier veterinary advice. Cats Protection identifies flat-faced cats, very young or older cats and cats that become highly stressed in heat as groups requiring particular care. ASPCA guidance also highlights Persian cats, older or overweight animals and animals with heart or lung disease. These descriptions are reasons to plan conservatively, not a numerical ranking of risk.
- Arrange a cool indoor area before the weather turns hot and keep access available all day.
- Monitor drinking, breathing, activity and behavior more often than you would for a healthy adult cat.
- Ask your veterinarian for an individual hot-weather plan if your cat has heart or lung disease, obesity, a short muzzle, advanced age or another chronic condition.
- Do not assume a cat will compensate by seeking shade; pain, weakness, anxiety or mobility problems may prevent escape from heat.
For any cat, a sudden change in behavior or breathing deserves attention even if the day does not feel exceptionally hot to you.
Protect light-colored or thinly furred skin from sun
Light-colored cats and cats with exposed or thinly furred areas can be vulnerable to sun damage, especially on the ear tips and nose. Cornell recommends pet-safe sunscreen on those areas. Cats Protection discusses sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher for exposed skin but warns that zinc oxide and salicylates are toxic to cats.
Use a product only when its label explicitly permits use on cats or pets, and check the complete ingredient list. Do not assume a human sunscreen is safe. Prevent licking where possible, avoid eyes and the mouth, and ask your veterinarian which product and coverage are suitable if you are uncertain. Shade and limiting direct sun remain the primary protections; sunscreen does not make prolonged heat exposure safe.

Recognize heat stress and heatstroke
Heat illness can worsen quickly. Reported warning signs include:
- panting or fast, labored breathing;
- drooling;
- restlessness, unusual agitation or confusion;
- vomiting or diarrhea;
- weakness, unsteadiness or difficulty standing;
- collapse;
- abnormal gum or tongue color.
Feline-specific guidance from Cats Protection and Cornell lists many of these signs; the AVMA also includes unsteadiness and abnormal gum or tongue color. Do not wait for every sign to appear. Panting in a cat, especially with weakness, drooling or behavior change, warrants urgent veterinary advice.
What to do if your cat may be overheated
- Move the cat out of the heat. Bring the cat to a cool, safe, well-ventilated place. If the cat is outside, do not delay while searching for a perfect setup.
- Call a veterinarian immediately. Tell the clinic what you observed, when it began and what cooling you have attempted. Follow the clinic’s instructions while preparing to travel.
- Begin gradual cooling. Gently wet the fur with cool, not very cold, water or use a cloth moistened with lukewarm water. Cooling should be gradual; Cats Protection cautions that extreme cold or stressful measures can cause shock or add stress.
- Keep handling calm. Do not force water, restrain the cat on a cooling mat or apply ice directly. Stop any method that causes panic or struggling.
- Transport safely. Use a carrier with good ventilation. Keep the vehicle cool, avoid leaving the cat alone during stops and continue following veterinary instructions en route.
Even if breathing appears to improve, veterinary assessment is still important after suspected heatstroke because serious effects may not be obvious immediately. A cat that collapses, cannot stand, is confused or has abnormal gum or tongue color needs emergency care without delay.
A simple daily routine during hot weather
Morning
- Refresh every water station and check that outdoor shade is still present.
- Inspect doors to sheds, garages and other outbuildings before closing them.
- Schedule play and travel for the cooler part of the day.
Afternoon
- Keep the cat indoors in the coolest available area when heat is extreme.
- Confirm that windows, screens, fans and air-conditioning equipment are safe and functioning.
- Observe breathing, alertness, appetite, drinking and willingness to move.
Evening
- Check the cat’s resting areas and replace water that has become warm, dirty or contaminated.
- Repeat an outbuilding and vehicle check if doors were open during the day.
- Record any unusual signs and contact your veterinarian if they persist or recur.
Questions cat owners often ask
Is there a temperature that is safe for every cat?
No. The risk depends on the individual cat and the setting, including age, coat, body condition, health, humidity, airflow, shade and access to water. Use the cat’s conditions and behavior rather than a universal thermometer number. If the home is hot, poorly ventilated or the cat cannot leave the area, act sooner.
Should I put ice in my cat’s water?
The essential step is continuous access to clean, fresh water. The guidance supports fresh water, multiple stations and, for some cats, a fountain that encourages drinking. It does not require ice. Offer water in a way your cat accepts and never delay veterinary care to experiment with cooling methods.
What if my cat refuses a cooling mat?
Leave the mat available in a shaded place, but allow the cat to choose another surface. A cooling mat is an optional comfort aid, not a treatment. Forcing or restraining a cat can add stress. Prioritize shade, ventilation, water and access to a cooler room.
Can I use my own sunscreen on my cat?
Do not assume a human product is safe. Use sunscreen only when it is explicitly labeled for cats or pets and the ingredients are appropriate. Cats Protection warns against zinc oxide and salicylates and discusses SPF 30 or higher for exposed areas. Ask your veterinarian if you cannot verify the label or if your cat will lick the application.
My indoor cat never goes outside. Does heat still matter?
Yes. Indoor rooms, conservatories, garages and closed utility areas can become hot and poorly ventilated. Provide water, shade, airflow and a choice of resting areas. Secure window screens and check that the cat cannot become trapped behind a closed door.

My cat is panting after play. Should I wait and see?
Panting or fast breathing is a warning sign in the heat, especially when accompanied by drooling, weakness, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, unsteadiness or abnormal gum or tongue color. Stop activity, move the cat to a cooler area, begin gentle cooling with cool or lukewarm water and contact a veterinarian immediately. Do not wait for every sign.
Can I cool an overheated cat with very cold water or ice?
No. The recommended approach is gradual cooling with cool, not very cold, water or a cloth moistened with lukewarm water while contacting a veterinarian. Very cold or stressful measures can cause shock or increase distress. Do not apply ice directly, force water or restrain the cat on a mat.
What should I do if my cat may be trapped in a shed or car?
Get the cat out of the heat promptly and move it to a cool, ventilated place. Contact a veterinarian immediately if there are any signs of overheating. Prevent recurrence by checking sheds, garages, greenhouses, barns and vehicles before closing or leaving them. Never leave a cat unattended in a parked car, even briefly or with windows cracked.
Which cats need a hot-weather plan from a veterinarian?
Ask in advance about flat-faced or Persian cats, very young or older cats, overweight cats, cats with heart or lung disease, cats with mobility limitations and cats that become highly stressed in heat. A veterinarian can tailor monitoring, indoor arrangements and sunscreen advice to the individual animal.
When to ask your veterinarian for a tailored plan
Ask for advice before hot weather if your cat is flat-faced, very young, elderly, overweight, has heart or lung disease, has difficulty moving, becomes severely stressed in heat or has light, exposed skin requiring sun protection. A veterinarian can assess the cat’s condition, discuss safe sunscreen ingredients and explain which changes in breathing or behavior should trigger an emergency visit. If you suspect heatstroke at any time, do not wait for a routine appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a fan enough to keep my cat safe?
A fan may support airflow, but it does not replace fresh water, shade, a cooler room or supervision. Keep cords and equipment safe, and move the cat if the room remains hot or stuffy.
How often should I check an outdoor cat in hot weather?
Check water, shade and access indoors repeatedly through the day, not only in the morning. If extreme heat is forecast, keep the cat indoors in an air-conditioned or otherwise cool area when possible.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What are the first emergency signs of heatstroke?
Panting or rapid breathing, drooling, restlessness, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, unsteadiness, collapse or abnormal gum or tongue color are warning signs. Contact a veterinarian immediately; do not wait for all of them.
Can heatstroke still be serious after my cat seems better?
Yes. A cat may appear to improve while serious effects are not yet obvious. Continue veterinary care after suspected heatstroke, even if breathing settles.
The Bottom Line
Keep fresh water available, provide shade and a cool indoor choice, limit activity in the hottest period, and check every heat trap. If your cat pants, drools, vomits, becomes weak or confused, or collapses, cool gradually and contact a veterinarian immediately.
