How to Keep Delivery Drivers Safe Around Your Dog

The reliable way to protect delivery drivers and your dog is physical separation before the door opens. This guide covers rooms, fences, crates, leashes, door security, notifications, training, and escape response.

The safest delivery is one in which your dog cannot reach the driver or the route to your door. Before answering the door, put the dog in a closed room, a secure fenced area, or a crate the dog is comfortable using. If the dog must remain outside, keep it on a leash well away from the driver, mailbox, and drop-off point. Then secure the exterior door so the dog cannot push through or slip out.

A friendly, familiar, or usually calm dog is not a guarantee. Delivery workers arrive on a property, approach a doorway, and may be carrying boxes or mail—circumstances that can trigger territorial, startled, anxious, illness-related, or resource-guarding behavior. Separation during the handoff is the practical safeguard; notifications and training can support that routine but cannot replace physical restraint.

Why separation matters even with a gentle dog

Dogs do not need a history of aggression to react unpredictably at a doorway. A person entering the dog’s perceived territory, an unfamiliar uniform, a sudden movement, or a package being placed near food or toys can change the situation quickly. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) advises using a separate room, crate, or fenced area when expecting a delivery. The United States Postal Service (USPS) likewise tells customers to keep dogs away from the carrier and door with another room, a fence, or a leash.

USPS employee-safety manager Leeann Theriault put the risk plainly in a May 29, 2025 statement: “All dogs — regardless of breed, size or age — have the potential to bite.” That is a safety warning, not a judgment about your dog’s character. Preventing access is more reliable than trying to predict which greeting will be harmless.

The routine to use for every delivery

1. Find out that a delivery is coming

If you have advance notice, use it to start the containment routine early. USPS Informed Delivery can show digital previews of incoming mail, giving some households time to move a dog before a carrier arrives. A notification is only a planning signal: it does not restrain a dog, guarantee the delivery time, or cover every carrier and parcel.

If you have no notification, treat an unexpected knock, doorbell alert, or vehicle at the curb as the signal. Do not open the door first and try to move the dog afterward.

2. Put the dog behind a real barrier

Move the dog before you approach the entrance. Close a room’s door, place the dog in a secure fenced section, or use a crate only if the dog is comfortable and appropriately crate-trained. The barrier must keep this individual dog away from the driver, not merely slow it down. A lightweight divider that the dog can knock over, climb, or push around is not adequate containment.

If you use a gate to create a separated area, check that it is firmly installed and that the dog cannot get its head, paws, or body through it. A gate is an implementation choice for making a separate space; the safety test is whether the dog remains physically unable to reach the delivery path.

3. Keep the route clear

Containment has to cover more than the threshold. Keep the dog away from the walkway, porch, mailbox, driveway approach, and any place where the driver must set down a parcel or hand over mail. Do not ask a driver to pet the dog, step into the dog’s area, or accept an item while the dog is present.

4. Check the dog’s location before opening

Look or listen for the dog before touching the door handle. Confirm that the room, crate, fence, or leash is actually secured. If another household member is moving the dog, wait for a clear confirmation rather than assuming the task is finished.

5. Secure the exterior door

When you open the door, make sure it is fully controlled. If you step outside, close and secure the door behind you before dealing with the delivery. An outward-opening door, a partially latched door, or a door held only by a weak stop can leave an escape gap. USPS specifically warns owners to secure the door so a dog cannot unexpectedly push through or slip out.

6. Complete the handoff without the dog

Keep the dog separated until the driver has left the property and the door is closed again. Retrieve the package only after the delivery path is clear. If a signature or identification check is required, perform it with the dog still contained; do not bring the dog to the threshold to make the process friendlier.

Choosing a containment method

Different homes and dogs need different arrangements. The table compares the options named in AVMA and USPS guidance by the conditions that determine whether they are safe.

Option When it works What to verify Important limitation
Closed room The dog can stay calmly behind a shut interior door away from the entrance. The door latches; the dog cannot open it; the room is not on the driver’s route. A door that is left ajar or that the dog can push open is not separation.
Secure fenced area The fence fully blocks access to the walkway, porch, mailbox, and drop-off point. No gaps, loose panels, climbable objects, or gates that can be pushed open. A yard fence may not protect a driver if the gate, driveway, or delivery path remains accessible.
Crate The dog is comfortable in the crate and has been appropriately crate-trained. The crate is correctly sized, latched, stable, and located away from the door. Do not introduce a crate for the first time during a delivery or use it for a dog that panics when confined.
Leash outdoors An adult can hold a secure leash while keeping the dog well away from the driver and route. The leash, collar or harness, handler, and distance are reliable; the dog cannot reach the doorway. A leash is not a substitute for distance or supervision, and tying a dog where it can reach the path is unsafe.

The best choice is the one you can put in place before every delivery and maintain until the driver has left. If a method depends on the dog obeying a last-second cue, it is less dependable than a closed physical barrier.

How to handle common delivery situations

A driver knocks while the dog is loose

  1. Do not open the door or speak through an opening the dog could use.
  2. Move the dog to the prepared room, crate, or fenced area and secure it.
  3. Check the exterior door, then collect the delivery.
  4. If you cannot safely contain the dog quickly, let the driver leave the package or follow the carrier’s instructions for another delivery attempt.

You need to step onto the porch

Secure the dog first, then close and latch the door behind you before stepping out. Keep your body and the package exchange on the side of the barrier that does not give the dog access. Re-enter only after the driver has moved away, and keep the dog contained until you are back inside with the door secured.

The dog stays in the yard

Do not assume an outdoor dog is safe because it is behind a property line. The driver may need to pass through a gate, approach a mailbox, or place a parcel near the dog’s space. Use a secure fenced section that excludes the route, or bring the dog indoors. If the dog must remain outside, use a leash and a handler who can maintain substantial distance from the driver.

There are several dogs

Contain every dog, not just the one that usually rushes the door. Dogs can amplify one another’s arousal, and a barrier that holds one dog may not hold two. Use separate rooms or a secure area with enough space and reliable latches for the entire group.

Children are answering the door

Make the containment check an adult responsibility. A child may not be able to hold a strong dog, recognize a loose latch, or control an outward-opening door. Set a household rule that children do not open the door until an adult has confirmed the dog is secured.

Apartment, townhouse, or shared-entry living

Contain the dog before opening the unit door, even if the carrier is outside a locked building. A dog that reaches a hallway, lobby, stairwell, or shared walkway can still confront a driver or another resident. Keep the leash attached only when an adult is actively controlling the dog and the route is clear.

Why a calm greeting can still go wrong

USPS lists several circumstances that can provoke a bite or chase: territorial behavior, being startled, anxiety, illness, and guarding food or toys. A dog may be relaxed with household members and still react to a person who approaches the home carrying a parcel. Pain or illness can also change behavior without warning. These triggers are why “he has never bitten anyone” is not a delivery plan.

Do not interpret a wagging tail, a familiar breed reputation, age, or small size as permission for contact. Keep the driver out of the dog’s reach and never ask the worker to test the dog’s friendliness.

Training helps, but it is not the delivery-time safeguard

Obedience work can improve your ability to move and control a dog. USPS identifies training as a way owners can gain better control, and a veterinarian or qualified trainer can help when separation, handling, or door behavior is difficult. Useful goals may include going to a designated room, waiting behind a barrier, and responding to a recall cue.

Those skills support the routine; they do not replace it. A dog that follows “stay” in a quiet room may break position when a stranger approaches the door. Until reliable behavior has been established and maintained in realistic situations, use the closed room, secure fence, crate, or well-managed leash every time.

Fixing the door-rushing pattern

Identify the exact failure

Watch from a safe setup and note whether the dog charges the door, barks through a window, jumps on the barrier, grabs objects, or searches for an open gate. Each problem points to a different weak point: visual access, barrier strength, door control, or the dog’s location.

Move the preparation earlier

Do not wait for the bell. Put the dog in the designated area when a delivery window begins or when you see a vehicle approaching. Keep the needed leash, crate latch, or room key in one known place so another household member can help without a search.

Rehearse without a driver at the door

Practice the sequence—cue to the room, close the barrier, check the exterior door, and release only after the route is clear—during calm periods. Increase distractions gradually. If the dog becomes distressed, seek professional behavior guidance rather than making the rehearsal more intense.

If the dog gets out

Do not chase a frightened or excited dog toward the driver. Tell the driver to remain still or move to a secure location if possible, and ask household members to close gates and exterior doors. Use calm, familiar cues and food only if doing so does not draw the dog toward the person. Once the dog is secured, check everyone for injuries and follow appropriate medical or animal-control advice for any bite, scratch, or fall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Afterward, change the setup that failed: repair the latch, add a second barrier, move the dog farther from the entry, or assign an adult to the door. If you cannot reliably prevent another escape, consult a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional before accepting in-person handoffs.

What the USPS numbers do—and do not—show

USPS reported around 5,200 dog attacks on Postal Service employees in 2025, down from around 6,000 in 2024. A separate USPS employee report published in 2025 said more than 6,000 attacks were reported in 2024, up from about 5,800 in 2023. These figures cover reported attacks on USPS employees, not every delivery company, every encounter, or all dog bites in the United States. They also are not rates per delivery, so they cannot tell you the probability of an incident at a particular home.

The prevention message is broader than the numbers: the USPS 2026 report states that animal behavior can change in an instant and that awareness by carriers and customers can prevent injuries. Physical separation is the customer-controlled part of that prevention.

A household checklist

  • Know where the dog will stay for every delivery.
  • Use a closed room, secure fenced area, appropriately crate-trained crate, or well-managed leash.
  • Keep the dog away from the walkway, mailbox, porch, driveway approach, and drop-off point.
  • Check the barrier before opening the exterior door.
  • Close and secure the door before stepping outside.
  • Keep the dog contained until the driver has left and the door is secured again.
  • Do not ask a driver to pet, approach, or accept an item while the dog is present.
  • Use delivery notifications as advance warning, never as a replacement for restraint.
  • Review local leash and containment requirements, which vary by jurisdiction.

When to get additional help

Ask a veterinarian or qualified trainer for assistance if the dog cannot be moved safely, panics in confinement, redirects aggression toward household members, repeatedly escapes, or has bitten or attempted to bite. A professional can help identify medical, fear, anxiety, or guarding issues and design a management plan. Until that plan is working, choose the most secure separation you can maintain and avoid face-to-face delivery handoffs.
