Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe most reliable way to keep a couch cleaner is to prevent contact where your dog rests, then remove the hair and dirt that still gets through. Put a washable protector over the dog’s usual spot, brush your dog with a coat-appropriate tool, vacuum upholstery and crevices on a schedule, and finish with a pet-hair roller or detailing tool. Wash removable fabrics and treat stains only according to the sofa or fabric maker’s instructions.
No routine can stop shedding completely. The goal is to keep loose fur, dander, muddy paw marks and odors manageable without damaging the upholstery.

Use a four-part routine
Prevention and removal solve different problems. A cover limits direct contact with fur, paws and moisture; it does not make a sofa immune to scratching, leaks or hair that slips underneath. Vacuuming removes loose material from the surface and seams. A roller, rubber tool or upholstery detailer catches hair left behind. Grooming reduces the amount of loose hair in the room, but shedding still occurs.
- Protect the high-use area: Cover the cushion or corner where your dog normally lies.
- Groom before heavy shedding reaches the room: Use a brush suited to your dog’s coat.
- Vacuum on a repeatable schedule: Work over cushions, piping, cracks and underneath furniture.
- Detail what remains: Use a pet-hair roller, rubber glove or upholstery crevice tool for embedded fur.
- Clean fabric carefully: Launder removable covers and spot-treat only with products and methods approved for that material.
Start with the dog’s usual lounging area rather than trying to deep-clean the entire sofa every day. Hair and dirt concentrate where your dog climbs up, turns around and settles.

Protect the place your dog actually uses
Choose the right type of cover
A washable throw or sofa protector is the strongest direct defense against hair and dirty paws. Measure the section that needs coverage and choose among a seat-only protector, a throw over one cushion, or a cover that reaches across the sofa. A cover that shifts constantly leaves gaps and creates more work, so look for a size and construction that stay in place during ordinary use.
| Cover choice | Best use | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Seat-only protector | One dog-favorite cushion or chaise | Seat dimensions, attachment method and wash directions |
| Large throw | Flexible coverage for changing lounging spots | Whether it can be tucked securely and washed frequently |
| Full sofa cover | Dogs that move across several cushions | Sofa shape, arm dimensions, openings and care label |
Do not infer waterproofing from the word “protector.” Confirm whether the maker says a fabric is water-resistant or waterproof, and treat that as a product-specific claim rather than a guarantee against every spill.
Example: a manufacturer-stated protector
PetSafe’s CozyUp Sofa Protector is described by the manufacturer as machine washable and intended to protect furniture from pet hair and dirty paws. The listed model dimensions are 46 × 26 × 6 inches, with a stated suitability for pets up to 120 lb. Those are specifications for that model, not independent performance tests. See the current product information at PetSafe’s CozyUp Furniture Protectors support page and verify dimensions and care instructions before ordering.
Make the cover part of the cleaning system
- Keep a second clean cover available so the dog’s spot is not uncovered while the first one is in the wash.
- Shake or vacuum the cover outdoors, if practical, before putting it in the washing machine.
- Follow the label for water temperature, detergent, drying and whether fasteners should be closed.
- Inspect the sofa underneath when the cover is removed; trapped grit can abrade fabric over time.
Reduce loose hair before it reaches the sofa
Brush for the coat your dog has
Regular brushing can remove loose hair before it lands on furniture. Dogs differ in coat length, texture, density and shedding pattern, so choose a brush appropriate to the individual dog rather than assuming one tool works for every coat. The Human Animal Support Services Animal Care Guidelines for Co-Sheltering recommend more frequent brushing for dogs that are shedding; the guidance is available in the 2021 Animal Care Guidelines for Co-Sheltering PDF.
Brush in a place that is easy to clean, such as outdoors or on a washable mat. Stop if your dog shows pain, skin irritation or distress, and ask a veterinarian or qualified groomer about a coat-specific approach when mats, parasites or skin disease are involved. Brushing reduces loose hair in the environment; it does not eliminate normal shedding.

Time grooming strategically
Brush before the dog’s usual couch time, after outdoor play, or during a seasonal shedding period when you notice more hair on floors and bedding. Grooming is most useful when it is consistent. A long, infrequent session that your dog resists is less practical than short sessions the dog tolerates.
Remove hair already on the couch
1. Vacuum broad surfaces first
Use a handheld or other upholstery-suitable vacuum. Remove cushions if the manufacturer permits it, and vacuum both sides when accessible. Move slowly over the seat, back, arms and piping so suction has time to lift loose hair, dander and grit.
AKC’s furniture-cleaning guidance recommends vacuuming cushions, cracks and areas under furniture before addressing stubborn hair. Its sequence is useful because a roller used first can spread loose fur or fill its adhesive surface unnecessarily. Read the full method in “How to Remove Dog Hair From Everything” from the American Kennel Club.
2. Work the collection points
- Between cushions: Use a narrow upholstery nozzle and check the frame ledge where hair settles.
- Along seams and piping: Follow the seam rather than pressing a hard nozzle aggressively into the fabric.
- Under the sofa: Reach beneath the front edge and under removable cushions where dirt accumulates.
- At the arms and back: These areas collect hair when a dog leans or turns.
Check the vacuum head for wrapped hair and empty its bin before suction drops. Follow the vacuum maker’s instructions for filters and attachments; an attachment designed for floors may be too harsh for delicate upholstery.
3. Lift what suction leaves behind
After vacuuming, use a pet-hair roller, rubber glove, rubberized brush or upholstery detailing tool on the remaining strands. Lightly drag the tool in one direction and collect the rolled hair rather than grinding it deeper into the weave. AKC lists pet-hair rollers and upholstery detailing tools for stubborn hair and hard-to-reach crevices. Zoetis also lists lint rollers, rubber gloves and dry sponges as options for hair that remains after vacuuming; its general pet-cleaning advice is at Zoetis Petcare’s spring-cleaning guide.

Test any new tool on an inconspicuous area first. Some fabrics snag, pill or show a changed nap when rubbed repeatedly. Avoid scraping with a blade or stiff metal edge.

Remove solids before moisture
Let mud dry enough to lift without smearing, then vacuum or brush away the loose grit. Blot fresh moisture with a clean absorbent cloth; do not rub, which can spread the mark and force soil into the fibers. Keep the dog off the area until it is dry.
Follow the upholstery care code
Read the sofa’s care label and the fabric maker’s instructions before applying water, detergent or solvent. Removable covers should be washed exactly as directed. For a fixed cushion, use only a spot treatment the furniture manufacturer recommends, applied in the stated amount and method. Upholstery constructions and finishes differ, so no single cleaner has been established as safe for every material.
- Test the recommended product on a hidden section and allow it to dry before treating a visible area.
- Use a clean, lightly damp cloth when the instructions call for one; avoid saturating cushion foam.
- Blot from the outside of a spot toward the center to limit a ring.
- Do not mix cleaners, bleach or disinfectants unless the manufacturer specifically directs it.
- Ventilate the room and keep pets away until the treated area is fully dry and free of cleaner residue.
Odor guidance for specially treated fabric
Aquaclean-treated fabrics have their own care directions. The cited Aquaclean/Dog Sofa document recommends regular vacuuming and room ventilation for odor maintenance and lists a damp cloth, vacuum cleaner or adhesive lint brush for pet hair. Apply those directions only when the sofa is identified as using Aquaclean-treated fabric; they are not general instructions for every upholstery material. The document is available at Aquaclean/Dog Sofa care guidance.
If odor returns quickly, persists after the approved cleaning method, or may come from urine that has reached the cushion core, stop adding products and consult the furniture maker or a professional upholstery cleaner. Surface fragrance can mask rather than remove contamination.

Build a schedule that matches your dog
| When | Task | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| After muddy or wet outings | Dry paws, check the coat and keep the dog off the sofa until clean and dry | Prevents fresh grit and moisture from becoming upholstery stains |
| Several times a week in high-shedding periods | Brush in an easy-to-clean location | Captures loose hair before it reaches furniture |
| Weekly, or more often for heavy shedders | Vacuum cushions, seams, cracks and the floor beneath | Removes accumulated hair, dander and abrasive dirt |
| When hair remains after vacuuming | Use a roller, rubber tool or detailer | Collects strands embedded in fabric or corners |
| According to the care label | Wash the protector and removable covers | Removes the material that a surface vacuum cannot |
| As soon as a spill occurs | Blot and use only an approved spot-treatment method | Reduces setting and avoids incompatible chemicals |
Increase vacuuming when you see visible hair, when multiple dogs share the sofa, or during a seasonal shed. Decrease the interval only when the upholstery remains clean and the cover is catching most debris; do not wait for a thick layer of hair to build up.

| Job | Useful category | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Loose hair over cushions | Upholstery-capable vacuum | Gentle attachment, manageable weight, filter maintenance and bin capacity |
| Quick cleanup of a small area | Pet-hair or adhesive roller | That the adhesive or roller surface is compatible with the fabric’s nap |
| Seams and corners | Upholstery crevice/detailing tool | Tip shape, suction control and whether it can reach without snagging |
| Hair that clings to the weave | Rubber glove, rubberized brush or dry sponge | Color transfer, pilling and manufacturer compatibility |
| Direct contact protection | Washable sofa protector | Coverage, stability, wash instructions, dimensions and stated water protection |
The cited guidance supports these categories, not a ranking of particular brands or vacuum models. Compare fit, fabric compatibility, cleanability and maintenance rather than assuming a higher price or a “pet” label guarantees better results.
Troubleshoot common failures
Hair comes back immediately
Check whether the dog is spending time on uncovered arms, backs or floor cushions. Expand the protector to those locations, brush before couch time and vacuum the surrounding floor so the dog is not carrying loose hair back onto the seat. Normal shedding will continue; the practical target is less accumulation between cleanings.
The cover slides off
Recheck its dimensions and attachment method. A cover that is too small, too smooth for the sofa or poorly tucked cannot protect the intended area. Use a design suited to the sofa shape, secure it according to the maker’s instructions and avoid adding pins or fasteners that could injure a dog or damage upholstery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe vacuum misses hair in seams
Separate loose hair removal from detail work. Empty the bin, clean the filter, use a narrower upholstery attachment and vacuum from more than one direction. Finish with a roller or rubber tool rather than repeatedly forcing a wide floor head into the seam.

A spot becomes a ring or discoloration
Stop and let the area dry. Record the fabric and care code, then contact the furniture maker or a professional cleaner for the approved method. Additional water or household chemicals can enlarge the mark or set a finish change.
Odor persists after cleaning
Ventilate and verify that the source is not beneath a cushion or in the cover. If the smell may have penetrated foam, household surface cleaning may be insufficient. Ask the manufacturer what treatment is safe for that construction instead of saturating it with an unverified product.
Protect the dog as well as the sofa
- Keep rollers, rubber tools, detergents and vacuum cords out of reach when not in use.
- Never use a cleaner on the dog’s coat just because it is labeled for upholstery.
- Do not leave loose pins, clips or broken fasteners in a cover that a dog can chew.
- Allow cleaned fabric and covers to dry fully before normal access.
- Use ventilation when a product’s instructions call for it, and follow all stated pet-exclusion times.
Grooming changes should also be gradual and comfortable. Sudden heavy shedding, bald patches, inflamed skin or persistent scratching warrants veterinary advice rather than more aggressive brushing.
What a cleanable couch setup looks like
For most homes, the practical setup is one washable protector sized to the dog’s favorite area, a spare protector, a gentle upholstery vacuum attachment, a narrow detailer, and a hair-removal tool. Keep the tools together so a two-minute cleanup is easy after the dog gets down. Vacuum the whole sofa on a schedule, but respond immediately to wet paws and spills. This combination addresses both sides of the problem: less direct contact and faster removal of what still lands on the upholstery.
