How to Keep Dogs From Getting Into Candy and Other Toxic Foods

Keep candy, snacks and food scraps out of reach with closed storage and secured garbage. Learn the major hazards and what to do immediately after a possible ingestion.

The most reliable way to keep a dog from eating candy or another hazardous food is to control access: put food in closed storage the dog cannot reach, secure scraps in a lidded container, and make sure every person in the home knows the rule. If food may already have been eaten, keep the packaging and call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly—even when the dog looks normal.

Why access control matters

Dogs often find hazards through ordinary household routines: a candy bowl on a coffee table, a snack bag left in a backpack, food scraps in an open bin, or a guest who offers a bite. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) advises vigilance about human food and drinks left within reach and about food in open garbage. A dog that has never taken food from a counter can still do so when the opportunity changes.

ASPCA’s 2025 summary of exposures encountered in 2024 attributed 16.1% of cases to human food and drinks and 13.6% to chocolate. Those percentages describe cases handled by ASPCA, not the probability that an individual dog will be poisoned and not the share of all dogs or households affected. They do show why ordinary food deserves the same access-control planning as medication and cleaning products.

Do not use a presumed “small amount” as a safety test. The risk depends on the product, ingredients, amount, and dog. A small-looking piece can be concentrated, sugar-free, filled with another hazard, or eaten by a very small dog. When exposure is possible, obtain product-specific advice rather than calculating toxicity at home.

Foods and ingredients that should stay inaccessible

Keep the original package or ingredient label available whenever possible. Product names are not enough: recipes vary, and one snack can contain several hazards.

Food or ingredient Why it is a concern Access-control detail
Chocolate, cocoa, coffee and other caffeine sources They contain methylxanthines. Dark chocolate, baking chocolate and cocoa powder contain more methylxanthines than white chocolate, so the type and amount matter. Store bars, baking supplies, coffee, cocoa and chocolate desserts together in closed storage. Record the type and amount if any is missing.
Xylitol This sweetener may be present in gum, candy, baked goods, toothpaste and some sugar-free foods. “Sugar-free” does not mean safe for dogs. Read labels rather than relying on the front of the package. Keep sugar-free products in the same secured area as other hazards.
Grapes and raisins They can be associated with kidney damage. Secure fresh fruit, trail mix, cereal, baked goods and lunch items that may contain raisins.
Onions, garlic and chives Allium foods can irritate the gastrointestinal tract and damage red blood cells. Protect ingredients, prepared dishes, sauces, seasoning mixes and leftovers, not just raw bulbs.
Macadamia nuts They can cause weakness, incoordination, vomiting, tremors and elevated body temperature. Check cookies, snack mixes and gift foods for macadamias before placing them where a dog can reach.
Raw yeast dough It can expand in the digestive tract and produce alcohol. Keep rising dough and discarded dough scraps behind a closed door or inside a secured appliance area.

The ASPCA’s list is a hazard guide, not a complete list of every food that may be unsafe. If an ingredient is unfamiliar or a product label is unavailable, treat access as a potential exposure and ask a veterinary professional.

Build a home that blocks access

1. Do a reach-and-open audit

View each room from your dog’s perspective. Check coffee tables, kitchen counters, chairs that function as steps, open shelves, purses, backpacks, lunch bags and floor-level baskets. Consider both physical reach and learned behavior: a dog may pull a bag down, nose open a drawer or wait for a dropped item.

  • Identify every place candy, snacks, baking ingredients and leftovers are temporarily set down.
  • Identify every garbage container that holds wrappers, bones, food scraps or takeout remains.
  • Check whether cabinet doors, refrigerator doors or pantry doors can be pushed, pawed or pulled open.
  • Include rooms where food is carried but not usually stored, such as a home office, bedroom or entryway.

Repeat the audit after changing furniture or bringing home a new dog. A previously inaccessible surface can become reachable when a chair, box or appliance is moved.

2. Put hazardous food in closed storage

Use a cabinet, pantry or refrigerator that the dog cannot reach or open. Close the door after every use; a container left open inside an otherwise safe room defeats the system. Keep candy, gum, baked goods, snack foods, coffee, cocoa, grapes, raisins, nuts and prepared dishes inside the same access-controlled routine.

If your dog can open a cabinet or reach its contents, a child-resistant latch can be a practical household aid. It is an access-control measure, not a guarantee that every dog will be unable to defeat the cabinet. Check the latch regularly and use storage that remains closed even when people are busy.

Do not leave hazardous food in low bowls, on accessible counters, in open grocery bags or in backpacks. A closed bag is not necessarily secure if the dog can chew through it or pull it from a chair.

3. Make garbage inaccessible

Food scraps and wrappers can contain concentrated residue or hidden ingredients. Keep them out of open garbage. A lidded, dog-resistant bin may help, but no specific bin model has been evaluated or endorsed in the cited ASPCA guidance. Choose a container the dog cannot open, knock over or pull away from its location, and use it consistently.

When cooking or hosting, move scraps directly into the secured bin instead of setting them on the counter “for later.” Empty the bin before leaving a dog alone if the contents could be tempting or hazardous. Check recycling as well as trash: food-coated packaging can be attractive even when it is not technically garbage.

4. Keep labels with the food

Store products so the ingredient panel remains available. If you transfer food to another container, keep the original package or photograph the label before discarding it. This is especially important for sugar-free candy, gum, baked goods, supplements and dental products that may contain xylitol.

For homemade food, write down the ingredients and approximate amount made. A professional can give better advice when you can identify the recipe, including chocolate type, sweeteners, raisins, nuts, onions or garlic.

Prevent mistakes during parties and meal preparation

Set the rule before guests arrive

Tell visitors that the dog must not receive candy, snacks, table scraps or food from children unless you have identified the ingredients and offered the portion yourself. Put a visible reminder near the food area if several people will be serving or clearing dishes. Keep purses, coats, backpacks and gift bags containing food behind a closed door.

Children may not recognize that gum, sugar-free sweets, raisins or chocolate are dangerous. Give them a dog-safe activity away from the food area and have an adult supervise dropped-food cleanup.

Control food during preparation

  • Place the dog behind a closed door or secure barrier while baking, cooking or unloading groceries.
  • Keep bowls of batter, rising dough, chocolate, chopped onions and discarded wrappers off the floor and away from edges.
  • Clean spills promptly, then check beneath appliances and furniture for dropped pieces.
  • Do not assume a dish is safe because the main ingredient is familiar; sauces, fillings and toppings may contain a hazard.

These measures are particularly useful during holidays and parties, when food is left out for longer and more people are moving through the house.

Use a simple daily prevention checklist

A short routine is easier to maintain than relying on memory. At the end of food preparation or a gathering, verify:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • All candy, gum, snacks, baking ingredients and leftovers are in closed, inaccessible storage.
  • Sugar-free products have been checked for xylitol and their labels are still available.
  • Food scraps, wrappers and takeout containers are inside a secured bin.
  • Backpacks, purses, lunch bags and grocery bags are off the floor and behind a closed door when they contain food.
  • Guests and children have been told not to feed the dog.
  • The dog cannot open the cabinet, drawer, refrigerator or bin where food is stored.

Keep the veterinarian’s number and the relevant poison-control contact where every adult can find them. Prevention works best when the response plan is prepared before an accident.

What to do if your dog may have eaten something toxic

1. Call promptly

Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service as soon as you suspect ingestion. Do not wait for symptoms before seeking advice. The ASPCA food-hazard guidance directs owners to note the amount ingested and contact a veterinarian or its poison-control center. If your dog is already showing signs of illness, tell the professional immediately and follow the instructions for urgent care.

For a suspected xylitol exposure, call even if the dog appears normal. The ASPCA advises immediate veterinary care for a symptomatic dog and recommends bringing the product packaging; because signs may not be present when you discover the missing food, waiting can lose valuable time.

2. Gather the facts while you call

Keep the package, ingredient list, remaining food and wrappers. Tell the professional:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What product or food was eaten, including brand or recipe when known.
  • Which ingredients are listed, especially xylitol, chocolate or cocoa, caffeine, raisins, grapes, onions, garlic, chives, macadamia nuts or yeast.
  • How much may be missing and whether the dog ate the wrapper or packaging.
  • When the exposure occurred, or the earliest and latest possible times.
  • Your dog’s size, age, health conditions and current medications, if known.

For chocolate, identify whether it was milk, dark, baking chocolate, cocoa powder or a mixed dessert. Note fillings such as raisins or macadamia nuts. Do not substitute a guess about “one piece” for the package weight or recipe details if those can be obtained.

3. Follow professional instructions exactly

Do not give a home remedy or take a treatment step unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional directs it. The correct response depends on the product, amount, dog and time since exposure. A professional may tell you to travel to a clinic, monitor at home with specific instructions, or provide other steps; follow that individualized advice rather than an internet rule of thumb.

For readers in the United States, the ASPCA poison-control number cited in its food-hazard guidance is (888) 426-4435. Readers elsewhere should contact a local veterinarian or animal poison service because emergency numbers and service availability differ by country. How the main hazards differ

Chocolate and caffeine

Chocolate, coffee and other caffeine sources contain methylxanthines. Dark chocolate, baking chocolate and cocoa powder are more concerning than white chocolate because they contain more methylxanthines. The product type, amount and dog’s size all affect the risk, so a professional needs those details. A chocolate dessert may also contain raisins, macadamia nuts, coffee or xylitol, making the ingredient list important even when the chocolate amount seems modest.

Xylitol

Xylitol can appear in gum, candy, baked goods, toothpaste and some sugar-free foods. The label may use the ingredient name rather than advertising it prominently. Keep sugar-free items secured and check every product instead of assuming that a familiar product is safe. If a dog may have consumed xylitol, call immediately and do not wait for the dog to look ill.

Grapes and raisins

Grapes and raisins can be associated with kidney damage. They may be found in trail mix, cereal, bakery items, stuffing and other foods where the dog owner does not expect them. Secure both the whole fruit and prepared foods, and identify the ingredient if any portion is missing.

Onions, garlic and chives

These allium foods can irritate the gastrointestinal tract and damage red blood cells. The risk is not limited to raw vegetables: cooked dishes, sauces, seasoning blends and leftovers may contain them. Keep scraps and serving dishes away from the dog and include the recipe details when calling for advice.

Macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts can cause weakness, incoordination, vomiting, tremors and elevated body temperature. They can be hidden in cookies, chocolates and snack mixes. If any of those foods are missing, preserve the package and report the possible filling or nut type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Raw yeast dough

Raw yeast dough can expand in the digestive tract and produce alcohol. Keep dough that is rising, dough scraps and flour-coated utensils inaccessible until cleanup is complete. Tell the veterinarian what kind of dough was eaten and whether it contained other hazardous ingredients.

Common prevention failures and their fixes

“It is only on the counter.”

A counter is safe only if the dog cannot reach it, climb to it or pull food down. Move the item into a closed cabinet or pantry, and keep chairs or boxes from creating a step.

“The package is closed.”

A zipped bag, backpack or thin snack wrapper is not secure if the dog can chew it. Use a closed cupboard, refrigerator or other storage the dog cannot access.

“Sugar-free means healthier.”

For dogs, sugar-free can signal a need to check for xylitol. Read the ingredient panel and store the product as a hazard until its ingredients are confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“There are no symptoms, so we can wait.”

Symptoms are not a reliable screening test. Call promptly, particularly when xylitol may be involved, and let a veterinary professional decide whether observation or examination is appropriate.

“The garbage is too heavy to move.”

A dog may pull, tip or reach into a heavy bin, and food residue can be accessible without moving it. Use a lidded, dog-resistant container in a location the dog cannot access, and transfer scraps immediately.

When to review your system

Recheck food security after adopting a dog, changing feeding routines, hosting a party, rearranging furniture or discovering that a cabinet or bin has been opened. A system that works for a small puppy may fail for a larger or more determined dog. Look for evidence such as torn packaging, moved chairs, paw marks, an open drawer or food missing from a surface, then change the storage location rather than relying on the dog not to repeat the behavior.

Access control should be shared by everyone who lives in or visits the home. One unsecured candy bowl or one discarded wrapper can undo an otherwise careful routine. Closed storage, secured garbage, readable labels and prompt professional advice form the practical safety net.
