Nematobrycon palmeri, usually called the emperor tetra, is a small Colombian schooling fish that does best in a mature, planted community aquarium. Keep at least five or six together (10 or more gives a more natural social display), provide an aquarium at least 75 L/20 US gal with about 80 cm of swimming length, maintain stable, clean water, and feed a varied omnivore diet. The species is generally peaceful, but males can be territorial and any fish large enough to swallow a two-inch tetra is an unsafe companion.

Emperor tetra essentials

The emperor tetra is Nematobrycon palmeri, a freshwater species associated with Colombia’s Atrato and San Juan river basins. FishBase records aquarium keeping in groups of five or more, a minimum aquarium length of 80 cm, and a diet that includes worms and crustaceans. Adult size is commonly reported at about 5 cm (2 in), although published maximum sizes vary. Confirm the scientific name when buying: “emperor” and “royal emperor” can be used for different fish in shops.

Care point Practical target What the evidence means
School size Five or six minimum; 10 or more preferred when the aquarium allows FishBase says five or more; several care guides recommend six, with one preferring 10 or more.
Aquarium At least 75 L (about 20 US gal) for a small species group, with roughly 80 cm length These are conservative care-guide recommendations, not a controlled stocking experiment. A community aquarium needs additional capacity.
Temperature 23–27 °C (73–81 °F) Several current care references converge on this interval.
pH Use stable, conditioned water within your fish’s acclimated range; published ranges span about 5.0–7.8 Sources disagree on one ideal value, so stability matters more than chasing a number.
Adult size About 5 cm (2 in) Reports of maximum size differ between sources.
Captive lifespan Approximately 3–6 years These are hobby-care estimates rather than results from a named longevity study.

How many emperor tetras should you keep?

Plan for a group rather than a single fish. Five is the lowest number listed by FishBase, while practical care guides commonly advise six or more. If your aquarium has the length and filtration to support them without crowding, a group of 10 or more usually produces more confident schooling, clearer social behavior and less pressure on any one fish.

Why a group matters

Emperor tetras are shoaling characins. In a very small group, a dominant male may focus his attention on fewer rivals and females, while isolated fish often remain nervous and hide. A larger group spreads normal displays through the school. This does not eliminate territorial behavior, but plants and wood that interrupt direct lines of sight help.

Match the group to the whole stocking plan

Count every fish, not only the emperor tetras. A 75 L aquarium can be a conservative starting point for a species-focused group, but adding bottom fish or other mid-water species requires more water volume, filtration and swimming length. Avoid selecting a number solely because a calculator produces a stocking percentage; adult size, activity, aquascape and maintenance capacity all affect the result.

Choosing the aquarium: length and usable space

Use an aquarium at least 80 cm long where possible. Length gives a mid-water school room to accelerate, turn and establish distance from one another. A tall, narrow tank with the same nominal volume provides less useful swimming area than a longer footprint.

Minimum starting point

  • Volume: at least 75 L (approximately 20 US gal) for a small group in a dedicated setup is a conservative baseline drawn from care recommendations.
  • Length: aim for about 80 cm or more, consistent with FishBase’s aquarium guidance.
  • Community use: choose a larger aquarium when adding other schools, bottom dwellers or territorial fish.
  • Cover: use plants and wood around the sides and rear, but retain an uninterrupted central swimming lane.

The figures above are guidance rather than a scientifically tested stocking limit. A heavily stocked aquarium, an immature filter or infrequent maintenance can make a larger tank functionally smaller.

Setting up a comfortable emperor tetra habitat

Cycle and mature the aquarium first

Before introducing fish, establish biological filtration and verify that the aquarium is cycled. One current care guide specifies zero ammonia and zero nitrite, with nitrate kept low. Use a freshwater test kit during setup and after changes so that an apparent “clear” aquarium is not mistaken for safe water.

  1. Run the filter and heater while the aquarium cycles; follow a fishless cycling method rather than using live fish to generate waste.
  2. Test ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Do not add the school while ammonia or nitrite is detectable.
  3. Dechlorinate replacement water and bring it close to the aquarium’s temperature before a water change.
  4. Acclimate new fish gradually, especially when the shop’s water differs from yours. Avoid abrupt pH or temperature changes.

Plants, wood and lighting

Live or artificial plants, driftwood and shaded retreats provide cover and break up sightlines. Subdued lighting and a dark substrate are recurring recommendations because they reduce glare and help the fish show their coloration, but a blackwater-style setup is not mandatory. Leave open water in front of and between plant groups so the school can swim continuously.

Filtration and maintenance

Choose filtration that maintains steady circulation without creating a strong, exhausting jet. Clean mechanical media in removed aquarium water rather than untreated tap water, and never replace all biological media at once. Perform regular partial water changes based on test results and stocking; consistency is safer than large, infrequent corrections.

Temperature, pH and water stability

Set a heater around the middle of the commonly cited 23–27 °C (73–81 °F) range, then watch the actual temperature with a reliable thermometer. Brief variation during maintenance is less concerning than repeated swings.

Interpreting the broad pH range

Published care pages list pH values from approximately 5.0 to 7.8. The spread reflects different source recommendations and the adaptability of captive fish, not a reason to force your aquarium rapidly toward either extreme. Test your tap water, let it stabilize, and select tank mates that tolerate the same chemistry. If an adjustment is genuinely necessary, make it slowly and measure the result rather than adding a large dose of pH-changing chemicals.

Hardness and acclimation

Sources describe emperor tetras as adaptable from soft to moderately hard water but do not agree on one precise hardness range. Stability, dechlorination and gradual acclimation are therefore more useful goals than a single hardness target. Quarantine new fish when possible so illness or a sudden chemistry change does not affect the established aquarium.

What emperor tetras eat

This is an omnivorous species. FishBase lists worms and crustaceans, and aquarium guides report that fish accept flakes or small pellets. Build the staple around a quality small-pellet or finely sized tropical food, then vary the diet with appropriately sized live or frozen items such as brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms.

A simple feeding routine

  • Feed a small portion once or twice daily—only what the school consumes promptly.
  • Offer live or frozen foods occasionally rather than making one food the entire diet.
  • Thaw frozen food in a small container and remove uneaten excess; do not pour a large block into the tank.
  • Watch body shape, activity and waste. A rounded but not swollen profile and active feeding indicate a better balance than a constantly distended belly.

Feed at the surface and mid-water where the tetras naturally forage, while checking that faster tank mates do not take every bite. A varied diet supports condition and breeding attempts, but overfeeding quickly degrades water quality.

Temperament and suitable tank mates

Healthy emperor tetras are generally peaceful community fish. They are best paired with similarly sized, non-aggressive species that share their temperature and water chemistry. Corydoras and other peaceful small tetras are examples mentioned by care sources, but compatibility depends on the complete stocking plan rather than a fixed “perfect tank-mate” list.

Use these compatibility checks

  • Adult size: reject any fish capable of swallowing a 5 cm tetra.
  • Behavior: avoid fin nippers, relentless chasers and highly aggressive species.
  • Water: match temperature and the stable pH/hardness your aquarium already maintains.
  • Swimming level: combine mid-water emperor tetras with peaceful bottom fish only when the footprint and filtration can support the total group.
  • Space: do not compress multiple schools into a short tank; lack of escape routes can intensify male displays.

Male territorial behavior

Males may spar or defend small areas, especially in a cramped, bare aquarium. This is usually managed with a larger group, plant cover and broken sightlines rather than by removing every displaying fish. Persistent damage, hiding or loss of appetite signals that the stocking, layout or health of the fish needs investigation.

Breeding emperor tetras

Breeding is optional and more demanding than maintaining a community school. A separate spawning aquarium lets you control light, protect eggs and raise fry without exposing them to adults or hungry tank mates.

Prepare a spawning setup

  • Use dim lighting and soft or acidic water, adjusted gradually rather than in a sudden chemistry change.
  • Provide fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop for egg attachment.
  • Use gentle filtration; a sponge filter is a practical choice for a dedicated breeding or fry tank.
  • Condition selected adults with varied foods, including small live or frozen offerings.

One hobby guide reports a breeding temperature of about 80–82 °F and 50–100 eggs. Treat those figures as that guide’s account, not a guaranteed clutch size or universal requirement.

Protect eggs and hatchlings

  1. Introduce the conditioned adults to the spawning tank and observe for egg scattering.
  2. Remove the adults after spawning because they may eat the eggs.
  3. Care guides report hatching in roughly two or three days; keep the tank dim and avoid sudden disturbances.
  4. When fry become free-swimming, offer very small foods such as infusoria.
  5. As they grow, add baby brine shrimp or powdered fry food in frequent, tiny portions.
  6. Remove waste carefully and keep water parameters stable; fry are less tolerant of pollution and abrupt changes than established adults.

Separate fry by size if larger juveniles monopolize food. Move young fish to a grow-out aquarium only when they are large enough to avoid being drawn into the filter and can compete safely for food.

Health, prevention and warning signs

Care references mention ich, parasites and fungal or bacterial infections as common aquarium problems, but there is no species-specific veterinary treatment protocol established in the material available here. Treat symptoms as a reason to investigate, not as a diagnosis.

Prevention checklist

  • Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and nitrate low.
  • Maintain stable temperature and chemistry; avoid emergency pH swings.
  • Quarantine arrivals when possible and inspect fish before adding them.
  • Do not overfeed or allow decaying food to accumulate.
  • Observe the school daily for clamped fins, white spots, rapid breathing, ulcers, unexplained isolation or refusal to eat.

If signs appear, test water first, move the affected fish to an appropriate quarantine system when practical, and seek advice from an aquatic veterinarian or experienced fish-health professional before dosing the display aquarium. A medication chosen for the wrong diagnosis can damage biological filtration or stress healthy tank mates.

A practical setup and stocking plan

For a species-focused aquarium

  1. Select a tank at least 75 L with approximately 80 cm of length.
  2. Cycle it fully and confirm zero ammonia and nitrite.
  3. Plant the rear and sides, add driftwood or another retreat, and leave a central lane open.
  4. Set stable temperature within 23–27 °C and record your tap-water pH.
  5. Add a group of six or more emperor tetras after gradual acclimation; choose 10 or more if the footprint and maintenance routine allow.
  6. Feed small portions of varied foods and monitor water quality weekly while the biological load settles.

For a community aquarium

  1. Plan the entire adult population before buying the first fish.
  2. Choose peaceful, similarly sized companions with overlapping water requirements.
  3. Increase aquarium length and filtration capacity as additional schools or bottom fish are added.
  4. Use plants and wood to divide territories, but retain open swimming room.
  5. Observe feeding and behavior for several weeks before adding another group.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Problem Why it matters Correction
Keeping one or two fish The species is social, and a tiny group can increase fear and male pressure. Plan for at least five or six, preferably a larger school where space permits.
Using a short tank with adequate litres but little length Volume alone does not provide a long swimming lane. Prioritize an aquarium around 80 cm long or longer.
Adding fish to an uncycled aquarium Ammonia and nitrite can rise before the filter is biologically ready. Cycle first and verify test results.
Chasing a “perfect” pH Rapid chemical changes are more dangerous than a stable value within the species’ documented span. Use your established chemistry, acclimate slowly and adjust only with a measured plan.
Overcrowding the mid-water Schools compete for space and territorial displays may intensify. Reduce the total stock or move fish to a longer, larger aquarium.
Feeding only one dry food A monotonous diet provides less variety than the species’ omnivorous feeding pattern. Keep a suitable staple but rotate occasional brine shrimp, daphnia or other small foods.
Leaving adults with a spawn Adults may eat eggs. Remove adults after spawning and raise fry separately.

What to buy before the fish

  • Aquarium with an approximately 80 cm footprint and a secure cover.
  • Heater and thermometer capable of holding 23–27 °C.
  • Biological and mechanical filtration sized for the full community.
  • Water conditioner and a freshwater test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH.
  • Plants, driftwood or other cover that leaves open swimming space.
  • Small-pellet food plus occasional live or frozen foods.
  • For breeding: a separate dim tank, spawning mop or fine-leaved plants, and gentle sponge filtration.

Sources and scope of the recommendations

Species identity, the five-fish minimum and 80 cm aquarium-length guidance come from FishBase’s Nematobrycon palmeri record. Detailed setup, feeding, compatibility and breeding recommendations are synthesized from Melbourne Tropical’s Emperor Tetra Care Guide, Aquarium Tidings’ care guide, and Aquarium Source’s guide (published September 27, 2026). A secondary range comparison appears in TankStocking’s database entry (version v2026.06). The numerical ranges in this article are care recommendations and hobby observations, not named population studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can emperor tetras live in a 10-gallon tank?

A 10-gallon aquarium is below the conservative 75 L (about 20 US gal) baseline used for a small group and is unlikely to provide the recommended swimming length. Choose an aquarium around 80 cm long or larger instead.

Are emperor tetras suitable for beginners?

They can be a reasonable choice for a beginner who can provide a fully cycled, stable aquarium, a proper group and compatible tank mates. The key skills are testing water, performing consistent partial changes and avoiding overcrowding.

Do emperor tetras need a blackwater aquarium?

No. Plants, wood, shade and stable, conditioned water are useful, but a blackwater setup is not mandatory. Captive fish are described as adaptable across a range of water conditions.

How can I tell male and female emperor tetras apart?

Males are commonly more elongated and show stronger coloration or territorial display, while females are often rounder, but appearance varies. Buy a healthy group rather than relying on sexing one juvenile fish.

Will emperor tetras eat their fry?

They may eat eggs, which is why breeding guides recommend removing adults after spawning and raising fry in a separate setup.
