Keep invasive aquatic species out by controlling what enters the tank, preventing escapes and overflow, and handling unwanted animals, plants, water, and equipment so none can reach natural waterways or storm drains. Inspect every new addition for hitchhikers, use physical barriers, follow local disposal rules, and never release aquarium life into the wild.
Why aquarium owners need an invasive-species plan
An invasive aquatic species is an animal, plant, or other organism moved outside its natural range that can survive, spread, and disrupt the receiving ecosystem. In an aquarium, the risk begins with ordinary activities: buying a plant with attached eggs, moving a net between a river and a tank, tipping used water into a storm drain, or releasing a fish that has outgrown its enclosure.

Introductions are not limited to adult fish. Snails, worms, microscopic organisms, eggs, plant fragments, mud, and water can all travel unnoticed. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Clean, Drain, Dry guidance warns that water-holding equipment can carry small life stages, so seeing no animals during a quick inspection is not proof that an item is safe.

Once an organism reaches a pond, stream, lake, wetland, or stormwater system, removal may be difficult or impossible. An aquarium animal can also carry pathogens even if it never establishes a breeding population; the Government of Saskatchewan specifically identifies that disease pathway in its Don't Let It Loose guidance. Prevention is therefore safer than trying to control an escape later.

Start before you buy a plant, fish, snail, or crayfish
Check the rules where you live
Prohibited-species lists, transport restrictions, and release laws are set by countries, states, provinces, territories, and sometimes municipalities. There is no single worldwide list. Search the website of your environmental, fisheries, agriculture, or wildlife authority for the current rules in your jurisdiction before ordering or importing an aquatic organism. Confirm that the species name is current and that the rule applies to your life stage and intended use; a species permitted for a closed aquarium may be restricted outdoors.
Keep a record of the seller, scientific name, purchase date, and any permit or invoice. Accurate identification helps an authority or veterinarian advise you if the animal is later surrendered, becomes ill, or is accidentally released.
Choose a traceable source
Buy from a lawful seller that can identify its stock and explain how plants and animals are handled. Avoid unlabelled swaps or shipments containing unidentified snails, shrimp, crayfish, or floating plants. A plant sold as a harmless ornamental may contain fragments or egg masses from another species. Responsible sourcing does not eliminate risk, but it makes identification and follow-up possible.

Inspect every arrival
Before an item enters the display aquarium, examine leaves, stems, roots, pots, packaging, filter media, nets, and other attached surfaces under bright light. Look for snails, egg capsules, larvae, worms, seed-like bodies, plant fragments, and mud. Pay particular attention to folds, root balls, gravel, suction cups, and seams where organisms can remain hidden.
Inspection is a risk-reduction step, not a guarantee. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency's aquatic animal biosecurity guidance emphasizes physical controls and vigilance because small organisms may be missed. Do not assume that clear-looking water, a brief rinse, or one visual check removes every hitchhiker.

Use a separate setup only when you can follow an appropriate protocol
A spare tank, container, net, siphon, and heater can keep new arrivals physically separate while you identify them and watch for problems. However, government sources do not establish one quarantine duration that is valid for every aquarium species, pathogen, plant, or jurisdiction. Do not copy an arbitrary number of days from another hobbyist and treat it as a universal standard. Ask a qualified aquatic veterinarian, local authority, or experienced specialist for a protocol suited to the species and your location, and keep all quarantine water and equipment contained.
Build containment into the aquarium and pond
Use a fitted lid and close escape routes
A secure lid or other physical barrier reduces the chance that fish, snails, crayfish, plants, or splashing water leave the system. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency lists secure lids as an example of a physical barrier in aquatic-animal facilities. A home-aquarium lid is not an absolute guarantee: leave no large cable gaps, check that hinged sections close properly, and consider clips or a secondary barrier for climbing or jumping species.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInspect the tank after maintenance. Return filter covers, overflow screens, airline openings, feeding doors, and tubing to their intended positions. Replace cracked covers and repair gaps before an animal discovers them. Keep heavy decorations stable so a climbing species cannot use them as a ramp.
Control splashes, siphons, and maintenance water
Position outlets and air stones so they do not spray onto floors, windows, or drains. Use a siphon with a shutoff and keep its discharge end under control; an unattended hose can empty a tank and carry organisms with the water. When changing water, collect it in a container that cannot tip or overflow and clean spills promptly without directing them into a storm drain.
Protect outdoor ponds and temporary tubs
Outdoor systems require more than a cover. Site ponds and tanks so heavy rain, irrigation, or a failed pump cannot wash their contents into a creek, ditch, wetland, or stormwater inlet. Install overflow controls and physical barriers appropriate to the site, and inspect them after storms. The Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry advises preventing aquariums and ponds from overflowing into waterways and stormwater drains in its aquatic animal health guidance.

Do not use a natural water body as a source of replacement water, plants, gravel, or live food unless local authorities explicitly permit and regulate that activity. Moving material in either direction can transfer organisms and pathogens.

Adopt a simple rule for routine work: aquarium animals, plants, substrate, filter media, and water stay in the aquarium system or in an authorized waste route. They do not go into a lake, river, stream, ditch, wetland, storm drain, or outdoor pond that can connect to one.
Label buckets, nets, hoses, and siphons so they are not accidentally used in a natural water body. If equipment must be used in more than one setting, follow the clean-drain-dry procedure below before it moves. Store cleaned equipment where rain cannot refill it or wash residue away.
What to do with fish, snails, crayfish, or plants you no longer want
Rehome live animals first
Contact friends, an aquarium club, a rescue organization, or a local aquarium or pet shop and ask whether it can accept the animal. Acceptance is location-dependent, and a shop may have limits on species, health status, tank size, or available space. Give an accurate description and disclose illness or unusual behavior rather than transferring a hidden problem.
Queensland Government guidance puts the rule plainly: do not dump fish, snails or crayfish; give unwanted aquarium animals to friends or a pet shop instead of letting them go in the wild. Its Prevent the spread of invasive freshwater animals page also covers unwanted ornamental pets. Arrange the handover while the animal is still healthy and keep it contained during transport.

Never release an aquarium animal
Do not release an unwanted animal because it is small, native somewhere else, unlikely to survive winter, or unable to reproduce alone. Conditions in a new water body may differ from your aquarium, and the animal may still spread disease or become food for another species. Releasing water that contains an animal, eggs, larvae, or pathogens creates the same pathway even when the adult is not intentionally introduced.
Do not assume a plant is harmless
Floating plants, mosses, stem cuttings, bulbs, and fragments can survive transport and colonize suitable habitat. Keep unwanted plant material contained while you find an authorized disposal route. Remove fragments from nets, decorations, and filter parts rather than rinsing them outdoors.
Dispose of plants and tank water according to local instructions
Disposal rules differ materially by jurisdiction, so use the route approved by your local authority. The examples below illustrate why advice from one region cannot be copied worldwide.
| Jurisdiction and source | Guidance stated by the authority | What the difference means |
|---|---|---|
| Canterbury, New Zealand | Environment Canterbury's aquarium and fish-tank advice says to keep used water and plants away from drains and waterways. | Do not treat a household drain or outdoor discharge as automatically acceptable; follow the region's directions for the specific material. |
| Australia | The Australian government says householders may dispose of aquarium water in a household sink or a suitable garden bed, but not in stormwater drains or waterways; see How you can protect Australia's aquatic animal health. | This is a jurisdiction-specific option, not a global rule. A garden bed must be suitable under local requirements and cannot drain directly to natural water. |
| Saskatchewan, Canada | Saskatchewan instructs residents to dry and freeze unwanted plants in sealed bags before placing them in the trash and says not to compost them; see Don't Let It Loose. | Freezing and bagging are specified there for plant disposal; they should not be presented as a universally legal or suitable treatment elsewhere. |
Before discarding anything, identify whether it is a live animal, plant, substrate, filter material, or water and check the local authority's instructions for that category. If directions are unclear, ask the agency that manages invasive species or waste collection. Keep the material sealed and away from drains while you wait for an answer.

When a net, bucket, wader, boat, pump, hose, trailer, or other water-holding item has been in a river, lake, pond, or other natural water body, treat it as a possible carrier. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service summarizes the sequence as Clean, Drain, Dry… After every waterbody, every time.

- Clean. Remove visible plants, animals, mud, algae, and sediment from surfaces, wheels, axles, seams, anchors, boots, and equipment compartments. Inspect crevices and dispose of the removed material according to local invasive-species rules.
- Drain. Empty live wells, bilges, buckets, pumps, hoses, filters, and other water-holding parts before leaving the site. Open plugs and position equipment so trapped water can run out without entering another water body.
- Dry. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says to dry equipment for at least five days or wipe it with a towel before reuse. That recommendation is written for watercraft and recreational equipment; it is not a universal aquarium-livestock quarantine or a guarantee for every organism.
- Follow equipment and local directions. Canadian federal guidance, including the December 2022 Clean, drain, dry, and decontaminate treatments and protocols, describes treatments and protocols that may depend on the equipment and situation. Use the manufacturer's instructions and the responsible authority's current procedure.
Do not turn recreational-equipment advice into a recipe for aquarium fish, shrimp, plants, beneficial bacteria, heaters, silicone, or delicate filter media. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service specifically says chemical prophylactics or disinfectants such as bleach are not recommended for treating watercraft and recreational equipment. Aquarium disinfection, when necessary, requires separate species-, material-, and jurisdiction-specific guidance.
Respond quickly when something goes wrong
A fish or invertebrate jumps out
Secure the animal in a clean, contained vessel and inspect the floor, nearby drains, filters, and decorations for additional escapees. Check and repair the gap that allowed the escape before returning the animal. If the animal has reached an outdoor drain or natural water, contact the relevant environmental or fisheries authority promptly rather than attempting an unapproved capture or release.
A plant arrives with snails or egg masses
Keep the plant isolated from established tanks. Photograph and identify the hitchhiker if possible, then ask a local authority or aquatic specialist whether it is restricted. Do not rinse the plant over a sink or outdoor drain unless your local instructions explicitly allow that route. Preserve the plant and any suspected eggs in a sealed container while you obtain advice.
An outdoor pond overflows
Stop the overflow, contain remaining animals and plants, and inspect the route the water took. Record the species, approximate amount, date, and receiving location. Notify the authority responsible for invasive species or waterways; early, accurate information gives it the best chance to assess the incident.
Equipment is needed at another water body immediately
Do not move wet equipment. Remove visible material, drain every compartment, and dry or towel-wipe it as the applicable authority directs. If full drying is impossible, postpone the trip or obtain site-specific decontamination instructions rather than guessing at a chemical treatment.
A practical household checklist
- Species and source checked against current local rules.
- New plants, animals, packaging, substrate, and equipment inspected for eggs, snails, fragments, mud, and other hitchhikers.
- Quarantine equipment available if a qualified adviser recommends it, with no assumed universal duration.
- Lid, overflow route, tubing, and maintenance containers checked for escape and spill risks.
- Outdoor ponds and tubs protected from rain-driven overflow to drains or waterways.
- Dedicated aquarium tools labelled and stored away from natural-water gear.
- A rehoming contact identified before an animal outgrows the aquarium.
- Local instructions saved for live animals, plants, water, substrate, and filter waste.
- Natural-water equipment cleaned, drained, and dried before reuse or transport.
These habits address the two ways invasives move: intentional release and accidental transport. They also leave you with a clear response if an escape or overflow occurs, without relying on a visual inspection or a disposal method that may be illegal in your area.
