These steps lower risk but cannot make a property completely snake-proof.
If a rattlesnake is already inside, treat it as a professional-removal situation. Keep people and pets away, do not handle or trap the snake, and call local animal control or a qualified wildlife-control professional. A suspected bite requires immediate medical attention.

Why rattlesnakes come near buildings
Rattlesnakes generally enter at ground level. A poorly fitting garage door, a crack where the foundation meets siding, an unsealed utility penetration or an open crawl-space access can provide a route indoors. The building itself is usually not the attraction; nearby shelter and prey are. Brush, stacked wood, rocks, stored materials and tall vegetation give a snake places to hide. Garbage, bird seed, pet food, livestock feed and other unsecured food can support rodents, which in turn can draw snakes close to the structure.

Removing one visible snake does not correct an opening or an attractive habitat. Prevention works best as a sequence: inspect and seal the envelope, change the area immediately around the building, then maintain both measures.

Start with a ground-level inspection
Walk the entire perimeter in daylight. Look from the snake’s perspective: any opening that reaches the ground or a foundation void deserves attention. A flashlight, gloves for handling building materials, a tape measure and a notepad are useful. Do not reach into holes or piles where a snake could be hiding.
Check these locations
- Garage door: With the door fully closed, inspect the complete bottom edge, both side seals and the corners. Look for daylight, crushed or split rubber, gaps where the floor is uneven, and sections that lift when the door closes.
- Foundation and siding joints: Examine cracks, failed mortar, gaps around sill plates and places where siding does not meet the foundation.
- Exterior and interior doors: Check thresholds, weather-stripping, door sweeps and corners. A door that closes but leaves a visible gap still needs repair.
- Windows and vents: Inspect basement windows, crawl-space vents, dryer vents and other openings. Screens should be intact and firmly attached.
- Utility penetrations: Check where pipes, conduit, cables, hoses and wires pass through walls or floors. Gaps around a penetration can be small but continuous.
- Crawl-space and basement access: Make sure hatches close tightly and that vents are screened without blocking required airflow.
- Floor drains and other openings: Do not seal or obstruct drainage features without qualified building advice. A repair that causes water or ventilation problems can create a different hazard.
Record each defect by location, approximate width and the surface around it. Material choice depends on whether the opening is a moving joint, a masonry crack, a metal vent or an uneven concrete edge.
Seal the garage first
Repair the bottom seal
A rattlesnake can get under a garage door when the bottom seal is worn, damaged or mismatched to an uneven floor. Replace a deteriorated seal with a profile compatible with the door’s retainer and the floor. Follow the door manufacturer’s dimensions and installation method. After closing the door, inspect the entire length again; the seal should contact the floor without preventing the door from operating normally.
A seal that works on a smooth concrete slab may not bridge a badly settled or broken floor. If a gap remains at one corner, correct the underlying alignment or have a garage-door technician assess it rather than layering loose material where it can interfere with the door.
Inspect the sides and corners
Side weather-stripping can shrink, tear or pull away from its track. Replace damaged sections with a compatible product and make sure the bottom seal meets the side seals at both corners. Keep the door closed when the garage is unattended; an open door defeats otherwise sound exclusion work.

Check the wall between garage and living space
Inspect the personnel door, threshold and any conduit or plumbing that passes through the shared wall. A snake that enters the garage can reach the house through an interior gap even when exterior doors are sound. Repair openings without blocking fire-rated assemblies, drainage or required equipment clearances; obtain qualified help when the repair affects a structural or safety-rated component.
Close other entry points with the right material
Use a durable repair matched to the opening and substrate. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife guidance identifies 1/4-inch hardware cloth, caulk, mortar and concrete patch as possible sealing materials. Michigan Department of Natural Resources also identifies metal flashing. These are options, not universal prescriptions.
| Opening or condition | Potential material | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Small, stable crack in a compatible joint | Exterior-grade caulk | Select a product compatible with the surface and expected movement; prepare the joint as directed. |
| Masonry or concrete crack | Mortar or concrete patch | Use a repair intended for that substrate and address moisture or movement rather than covering an active failure. |
| Vent, crawl-space opening or irregular gap | 1/4-inch hardware cloth | Fasten all edges securely and preserve required ventilation; do not leave sharp edges exposed to people or pets. |
| Edge that needs a rigid barrier | Metal flashing | Shape and fasten it so there is no loose edge or bypass route, while preserving drainage. |
Do not fill a hole that is serving as required drainage, combustion-air supply or equipment ventilation. If you cannot identify an opening’s function, ask a qualified contractor before sealing it. After every repair, check from inside and outside and look for a new gap created by movement or weather.
Make the area around the structure less attractive
Remove cover
Clear brush, rock piles, discarded materials and debris from beside walls, doors and the garage apron. Move stacked wood and stored items away from the building where practical, and keep them elevated or arranged so the area can be inspected without reaching into concealed spaces. Trim vegetation close to the foundation and keep grass maintained. A tidy perimeter improves visibility and removes hiding places, but it does not guarantee that a snake will never cross the yard.
Reduce rodent food and shelter
Secure garbage cans, bird seed, pet food, animal feed and compost in closed, sturdy containers. Clean up spilled feed and do not leave pet bowls outdoors overnight. Keep storage areas orderly so rodent signs are visible. Rodent reduction matters because rodents can attract snakes; choose any rodent-control method in accordance with local rules and product directions, and do not assume a particular bait or pesticide is safe for pets or wildlife.

Maintain a clear inspection strip
A narrow, consistently maintained area around the building makes it easier to see holes, tracks, shed skins or a snake resting near a door. It also helps you notice when a seal has failed. Keep irrigation from washing soil away beneath thresholds or foundations, since erosion can create new gaps.

Pet-safe routines for rattlesnake country
Dogs and cats may investigate cover before a person notices a snake. Keep pets away from brush piles, stacked materials and rock edges, and supervise time outdoors in areas where rattlesnakes occur. Use a leash near dense vegetation or places you cannot inspect. Store pet food indoors or in sealed containers and remove outdoor bowls after feeding.
Teach household members to bring pets inside when a snake is seen rather than allowing an animal to chase it. Do not send a dog to investigate a garage, shed or crawl-space opening. If a snake is found, close interior doors that would let it move deeper into the home, move people and animals to a safe area, and make the call for professional help from a location separated from the snake.
What to do when a rattlesnake is outside
Give the snake a clear route away from people and pets. Bring children and animals indoors, close nearby doors and keep everyone well back. Do not approach for a closer look, attempt to move it with a broom, throw objects, or rely on hearing a rattle as a warning. The National Park Service notes that people should not approach snakes and should not depend on a rattle to detect danger.
Once the snake has left, inspect the route it used and the nearest building openings. Make repairs only after you are certain the animal is gone and you can work without disturbing it. If the snake remains near a doorway, garage or other high-traffic area, contact local animal control or a qualified wildlife professional for guidance.

What to do when a rattlesnake is inside
Do not try to identify it at close range, handle it, capture it or place a trap beside it. A snake can move quickly when cornered, and a homemade removal attempt puts people and pets within striking distance.
- Move away slowly. Keep a safe distance and avoid blocking the snake’s path.
- Remove people and pets. Take children and animals to another room or outside by a route that does not pass the snake.
- Isolate the area if possible. Close a door between the snake and occupied rooms without approaching it. Do not seal the snake into a space if doing so requires getting close.
- Call for help. Contact local animal control or a qualified wildlife-control professional. Tell the dispatcher that you suspect a rattlesnake is indoors, give the exact location, and ask whether the responder is authorized and equipped to handle venomous snakes.
- Follow local instructions. Agencies differ in their services, response times and rules for relocation or other disposition. Do not assume that a service permitted in one county is permitted in another.
Leave the snake and any doors or barriers in place until the responder gives further instructions. Keep the garage door closed if opening it would allow the snake to move into another area or escape toward people.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If someone may have been bitten
Treat a suspected rattlesnake bite as a medical emergency. Move away from the snake, call emergency services and seek immediate medical attention. California wildlife guidance directs people to call 9-1-1 for a rattlesnake-bite emergency; elsewhere, use the local emergency number. Do not delay care while trying to catch or photograph the snake, and do not handle the snake to help identify it. Keep the injured person as still and calm as practical while following the dispatcher’s instructions.
Do snake repellents work?
Do not substitute mothballs, sulfur or a commercial chemical repellent for sealing and habitat management. An older County of San Diego publication stated that commercial chemical repellents had not demonstrated enough effectiveness to warrant recommendation. That statement is dated guidance rather than a current controlled product test, so it should not be read as proof about every product sold today. The practical conclusion is narrower: no repellent should be treated as dependable protection when a building has open gaps or a yard provides abundant cover and prey.

Choosing a wildlife professional
When an indoor snake requires removal, compare providers on facts that matter for this specific situation:
- Authorization, licensing or certification required by your state, county or municipality.
- Documented experience handling venomous snakes, not only general nuisance wildlife.
- Service area and response availability, including evenings or weekends if relevant.
- A clear explanation of how the snake will be contained and where it may be taken under local rules.
- Written pricing, follow-up inspection and recommendations for correcting the entry point.
- Proof of insurance and a commitment not to ask a homeowner to handle, corner or transport the snake.
Ask local wildlife authorities which categories of professionals are permitted in your area. Laws governing capture, relocation, possession and killing differ by jurisdiction and can also depend on species and land status. Do not rely on a general internet claim about what is legal where you live.
A maintenance schedule that catches new gaps
Monthly
- Close the garage door and inspect the bottom and side seals.
- Walk the foundation and look for fresh cracks, erosion or disturbed screens.
- Check that garbage, feed, seed and compost containers remain closed.
- Trim growth that has reached the wall or obscured a threshold.
After storms, construction or landscaping
- Look for soil washout beneath doors and along the foundation.
- Inspect areas where utility work, siding work or irrigation changes disturbed the wall.
- Recheck crawl-space screens, vents and flashing for loosened fasteners.
Seasonally
- Move newly accumulated brush, rocks and debris away from the building.
- Reorganize wood and stored materials so the ground and wall remain visible.
- Review the household response plan with children, visitors and pet caregivers.
- Confirm the phone numbers for animal control, wildlife authorities and emergency services.
Troubleshooting common situations
There is daylight under only one corner of the garage door
Inspect the floor for settlement, debris or a damaged seal retainer. Replace the seal with a compatible profile and correct alignment if needed. Do not wedge a loose board, towel or other temporary object under the door; it can fail, interfere with operation or create a new gap.
You sealed a crack, but rodents are still present
Continue looking for food sources and additional openings around the building. Secure feed and garbage, clean spills and inspect utility penetrations, vents and crawl-space access. Rodent activity can persist when several small routes or attractants remain.
A snake is repeatedly seen beside the same wall
Keep people and pets away, then inspect that wall for cover, rodent activity and a ground-level opening once the snake is gone. Repeated sightings do not prove that the snake lives inside, but they justify a more thorough perimeter inspection and local wildlife advice.
You cannot tell whether a gap is required for ventilation
Do not seal it blindly. Identify the appliance, vent or drainage function and obtain qualified building guidance. Exclusion should not create carbon-monoxide, moisture, fire or equipment-clearance hazards.
What prevention can and cannot promise
Sealing openings, removing cover and limiting rodents are the strongest practical measures supported by wildlife-agency guidance. They reduce access and the reasons a snake may linger near the building, but they cannot guarantee a snake-free property. Keep the response plan current, maintain the garage and foundation seals, and treat every suspected rattlesnake indoors as a situation for trained local help rather than a do-it-yourself capture.
