The most reliable way to keep a cat hydrated is to make clean water easy to reach all day, then improve intake with moisture-rich food or small preference-based changes. A cat’s total water comes from both drinking and food, so a cat eating wet food may drink less from a bowl than one eating dry food. Bowls, locations, water temperature, flavoring and fountains are individual experiments—not guaranteed fixes.
Watch for changes in appetite, energy, mouth moisture, eye appearance or drinking behavior. Dehydration can accompany illnesses such as kidney disease, diabetes, vomiting, diarrhea or hyperthyroidism. If your cat seems dehydrated or suddenly drinks much more, contact a veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose the cause at home.

How much water does a cat need?
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine gives a broad estimate of about 4 fluid ounces of water per 5 pounds of lean body weight per day. For an average 10-pound cat, that works out to about 8 fluid ounces, or 1 cup, daily. Cornell’s hydration page was last updated in 2021.
That figure is an estimate of total daily water need, not a quota that must come from the water bowl. It includes moisture in food, and a cat’s needs can differ with body size, diet, activity, health and fluid losses. Do not force a cat to consume a calculated volume or use the estimate to override a veterinarian’s instructions.

These amounts are simple applications of Cornell’s 4-ounces-per-5-pounds estimate. They should not be interpreted as the amount your cat must visibly drink. Fresh, clean drinking water should remain available even when food supplies much of the daily moisture.
Why food moisture changes what you see in the bowl
Wet food can make a substantial contribution to hydration. Cornell notes that wet food may contain up to 80% water, while its feeding guidance lists canned cat food at a moisture content of at least 75%. VCA Animal Hospitals explains that a healthy cat’s water requirement can often be met partly or completely by canned food.
This is why a cat that eats wet food may appear to drink very little and still obtain considerable water. The reverse can happen with a dry-food diet: less water arrives in meals, so more may need to come from drinking. Neither pattern, by itself, proves that a cat is healthy or dehydrated.

Do not remove the water bowl because a cat eats canned food. Keep water available and judge changes against your cat’s normal appetite, urination, energy and drinking habits. If a veterinarian has prescribed a specific diet, ask before changing food or adding ingredients.
A practical plan to increase water intake
Use the following sequence so that you change one variable at a time and can see what your cat actually prefers.
- Set out fresh water in accessible places. Put bowls where your cat spends time and can approach without being cornered. In a home with several pets, check whether another animal could block a route or guard a bowl.
- Add a second location. VCA suggests multiple bowls in quiet areas away from the litter box. Separate stations are especially useful when cats have different routines or when one bowl is in a busy hallway.
- Improve bowl care. Wash and rinse bowls daily and replace the water regularly. A clean bowl removes food residue, dust and stale odors that can make a cat avoid it.
- Test bowl materials. Offer glass, metal and ceramic one at a time if your cat is reluctant to drink. VCA identifies these as materials some cats prefer over plastic; no material works for every cat.
- Test water temperature. Try chilled water and room-temperature water in separate, clean bowls. Some cats prefer cold water and others do not, so observe rather than assuming.
- Increase moisture through food. Offer nutritionally complete canned food when it fits your cat’s calorie needs and any veterinary diet. If your cat eats kibble, add only a small amount of water at first and increase gradually if the food is accepted.
- Protect food intake during experiments. If your cat refuses moistened food, return to the form it will eat. VCA advises not allowing a cat to go without food simply because it rejects added water. Ask a veterinarian for a transition plan if a diet change is medically important.
- Try a mild flavor only if needed. A small amount of water from canned tuna or low-sodium chicken broth may tempt some cats. VCA gives about one teaspoon of low-sodium broth without additional spices as an example. Keep the mixture fresh, avoid seasoned products and stop if it reduces normal eating or conflicts with a prescribed diet.
- Consider moving water as an optional trial. A fountain may appeal to a cat that likes running water, but preferences vary. Introduce it alongside a familiar bowl rather than removing the only accepted source. Follow the model’s cleaning directions; VCA advises cleaning a fountain filter weekly or as directed.
Setting up bowls that a cat will actually use
Choose locations for safety and access
A bowl is not useful if a cat cannot reach it comfortably. Place water on the cat’s usual level, away from the litter box and from appliances or doors that create sudden noise. In multi-pet households, provide enough stations that a timid cat can drink without passing a dog or another cat.

Observe the approach, not just the bowl. A cat may avoid a station because another pet watches it, because a child disturbs it or because the bowl is tucked into a corner where the cat cannot see around itself. Moving one bowl a short distance can be more effective than buying a new container.
Keep water clean and predictable
Daily washing and rinsing should be part of the routine. Refill with fresh water regularly instead of topping up an old layer indefinitely. If food, litter or hair falls into the bowl, clean it immediately. Keep at least one familiar bowl available when testing a new material, temperature or fountain so a failed experiment does not leave the cat without an accepted option.
Wet food and added water: how to make changes safely
Canned food can supply at least three-quarters water, and some wet foods contain up to 80%. That moisture is delivered with calories and nutrients, so the food must still be nutritionally adequate for the cat’s life stage. A veterinary diet may have precise nutrient, mineral or calorie requirements; consult the prescribing clinic before diluting it or substituting another food.

For a cat eating dry food, mix in a small quantity of water and increase slowly only if the cat continues to eat. Sudden texture changes can cause refusal. The priority during a home trial is both hydration and adequate food intake. A cat that stops eating needs veterinary advice, particularly if the refusal persists or occurs with vomiting, diarrhea, weakness or other illness signs.

Some cats are attracted to moving water, so a fountain is a reasonable, optional experiment after you have made ordinary bowls clean and accessible. Neither Cornell nor VCA identifies one best model, and neither source supports a guaranteed increase in drinking for every cat.

Introduce the fountain gradually. Place it near the established bowl, let the cat investigate while the old bowl remains available and keep the water fresh. Recognizing dehydration and knowing when to call
Cornell lists lethargy, weakness, poor appetite, dry mucous membranes and, in more severe cases, sunken eyes as possible signs of dehydration. These signs are not a home diagnosis. They can occur with illnesses that increase fluid loss or reduce intake, including kidney disease, diabetes, vomiting, diarrhea and hyperthyroidism.
If dehydration is a concern, Cornell advises contacting a veterinarian promptly. Veterinary care may include fluids and treatment of the underlying problem. Do not rely on a bowl test, skin-pinch test or online checklist to decide that professional assessment is unnecessary, and do not attempt to give fluids by syringe unless a veterinarian has shown you how and specifically advised it.
Call promptly when you notice
- Marked tiredness or weakness combined with reduced drinking or eating
- Dry or sticky gums or other unusually dry mouth tissues
- Eyes that appear sunken, especially with other signs
- Vomiting or diarrhea that could be causing fluid loss
- A cat that will not eat after you alter food texture or add water
Urgency depends on the severity and combination of signs. A cat that is collapsed, unable to keep fluids down or rapidly worsening needs immediate veterinary direction rather than a home hydration experiment.
What a sudden increase in drinking can mean
More drinking is not automatically a success. VCA notes that a sudden increase in drinking can indicate a problem and recommends consulting a veterinarian. Track when the change began, whether urination also increased, what food is being fed and any vomiting, diarrhea, weight or behavior changes. Bring that information to the appointment instead of trying to correct the increase with restricted water.

A simple daily hydration check
- Refresh and wash every water bowl.
- Confirm that each cat can reach a station without another pet blocking it.
- Note whether food was eaten, especially after adding water or changing texture.
- Look for meaningful changes in energy, gum moisture, eye appearance, vomiting, diarrhea or urination.
- Record unusual increases or decreases in drinking for your veterinarian.
Consistent access, clean equipment and food that your cat willingly eats are the foundation. Preference testing can make drinking easier, but illness-related dehydration requires veterinary assessment and treatment of its cause.
