The most reliable way to keep a cat off your laundry is to remove access to the clothes: shut the laundry-room or closet door, store clean garments in closed furniture, and use a hamper with a secure lid. Then give your cat a more suitable place to sleep, scratch, climb, play, or forage, and reward use of that alternative.
First determine what “off my laundry” means. A cat sleeping on a clean shirt, climbing into an open basket, or pulling at fabric is an access-and-enrichment problem. Urinating or defecating on clothing is different: it can be related to litter-box conditions or a medical problem and warrants veterinary attention rather than a stronger deterrent.

Identify the behavior before choosing a solution
The same laundry pile can attract a cat for several different reasons. Watch what happens for a few days, without scolding, so you can match the response to the behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Warm, soft, elevated or recently handled clothing can become an appealing resting surface. If the cat settles on laundry but does not damage or soil it, the immediate goal is physical separation plus a comfortable alternative. A closed door, closed drawer or cupboard, or lidded hamper addresses the access part of the problem; a bed, shelf, cat tree or folded blanket in an approved location addresses the resting preference.

Climbing into a basket or pulling clothes out
An open basket provides a small enclosure and an opportunity to investigate. Some cats are also seeking movement, play or attention. Keep the basket inaccessible, then provide short interactive-play sessions and a place where the cat is allowed to climb or hide. If the cat repeatedly tips a container, the container is not functioning as a barrier; change the setup rather than escalating to punishment.
Chewing, kneading or scratching fabric
Fabric contact may be part of play, comfort-seeking or a need to scratch. Keep clothing secured and place an appropriate scratching surface or toy near the route the cat uses to reach the laundry. Reward the cat when it chooses the approved item. Cornell’s Feline Health Center states, “The only guaranteed way to stop your cat from scratching a given area or object is to restrict access.” That statement addresses scratching targets, not laundry specifically, but the access-management principle applies directly to clothes.
Urination or defecation on clothing
Soiling is not ordinary lounging behavior and should not be treated as spite. Clothing may be selected because it is soft or carries a familiar scent, but the underlying issue can involve litter-box access, the box environment or a medical condition. Arrange a veterinary assessment and review the litter-box setup before relying on a hamper, spray or other product.
Make the laundry inaccessible first
Access control is the foundation. Do it before experimenting with scents, sprays or enrichment, because an alternative cannot compete with an open pile of clothes if the cat can reach it whenever it wants.
- Close the room or closet. Keep the door shut whenever laundry is on the floor, in a basket or waiting to be folded. If the cat can push the door open, use a safe latch that adults can operate quickly and that does not create a trapping hazard.
- Move clean clothes into closed storage. Put folded items in drawers, wardrobes or cupboards rather than on a bed, chair or open shelf. Return clothing to storage as soon as practical instead of treating a temporary pile as permanent furniture.
- Use a hamper with a secure lid. A lidded laundry hamper is a practical way to block access when clothing cannot immediately be washed. Choose a design that the cat cannot easily open, tip or climb into, and keep the lid closed after every use.
- Contain clothes during sorting and folding. Sort on a closed surface or inside the room with the door shut. If you must pause, place the clothing in a closed container rather than leaving it unattended.
- Check the whole route. Cats may reach laundry through an open bathroom door, a hallway basket or a bedroom chair. Identify every place clothes accumulate and apply the same access rule there.
These measures are management, not a claim that any single container works for every cat. A determined or strong cat may open a light lid, push a basket across a smooth floor or exploit a gap under a door. Observe the setup and improve the barrier if access continues.

Comparing common access options
| Option | Closure and security | Reach or tipping risk | Capacity and mobility | Space considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Closed room or closet | High when the door remains shut; security depends on the cat’s ability to open it. | No clothing access while the door is closed. | Capacity, moving and cleaning depend on the room or closet; not stated in the veterinary guidance. | Requires a door that can be closed without blocking normal household use. |
| Drawers, cupboards or wardrobe | High when fully closed. | No reach to garments once doors or drawers are shut. | Capacity and cleaning depend on the furniture; not stated in the guidance. | Uses existing storage but may require enough interior space for the laundry volume. |
| Lidded laundry hamper | Varies with lid fit, hinge and whether the cat can lift or bypass it. | Check whether the cat can open, tip or climb into the container. | Choose a size you can carry and clean safely; a specific capacity is not established here. | Useful where a door or built-in storage is unavailable. |
| Open basket or floor pile | None. | Full access. | Easy to move, but that convenience does not prevent contact. | Requires no dedicated space, but creates an exposed target. |
The first three options can be combined. For example, keep the hamper in a closed laundry room and use drawers for clean clothing. Layering barriers is sensible when a cat has already learned that laundry is an attractive resting or play area.
Give your cat a better place to go
Blocking laundry removes an opportunity. It does not explain what the cat should do instead. Merck Veterinary Manual guidance on feline behavior emphasizes safe outlets, enrichment and reinforcement-based training; VCA Animal Hospitals likewise advises considering a cat’s enrichment and appropriate outlets before using behavior products.
Provide an approved resting place
Place a bed, mat, folded washable blanket or elevated resting surface away from the laundry. The best location depends on what the cat was getting from the clothes: a quiet corner suits a cat seeking privacy, while a perch near household activity may suit a cat seeking company. Keep the alternative stable and easy to reach. If the cat prefers warmth, position the approved bed in a naturally warm, safe spot rather than trying to make the laundry more uncomfortable.
Offer a scratching surface
Use a sturdy scratching post or pad if the cat claws, stretches or kneads the clothing. Stability matters: a surface that wobbles can be rejected even when its material is suitable. Put it near the place where the cat usually approaches the laundry, then move it gradually if you want it elsewhere. Reward investigation and scratching on the approved surface with calm praise, play or a small food reward that fits the cat’s normal diet.
Build in climbing and perching opportunities
If the cat climbs onto laundry to reach height or observe the room, provide a secure cat tree, shelf or other designated perch. Check that it is appropriate for the cat’s size and cannot tip. Keep it clear of cords, unstable objects and places where a fall could cause injury. A perch is an alternative outlet, not proof that the cat will immediately stop visiting the laundry; continue restricting clothing access while the new habit develops.

Use play and food-based enrichment
Interactive play, food-dispensing toys and simple foraging activities can give an active or inquisitive cat an outlet that does not involve clothing. Supervise unfamiliar toys and follow their instructions. Rotate options so the cat has a reason to investigate the approved items, but do not leave a toy with loose parts available if it can be swallowed or damaged.

When the cat moves to its bed, scratching post, perch or toy, reward that choice promptly. Keep your response quiet and consistent. If the cat heads toward laundry, block access without drama and redirect to the approved outlet. The timing matters: rewarding the alternative after the cat has used it teaches which behavior earns attention, whereas chasing or yelling can make the laundry area more exciting.
Use deterrents cautiously
Deterrents are not a universal fix. VCA advises first asking why the behavior occurs and whether the cat has sufficient enrichment and appropriate outlets. It also warns that a deterrent can increase anxiety when fear or anxiety contributes to the behavior. Follow any product directions exactly and supervise its use.
- Do not start with fear. Shouting, chasing, startling or physically punishing the cat may create anxiety and does not teach a preferred resting, scratching or play location.
- Do not assume a smell solves the cause. A scent-based product may fail when the cat is seeking warmth, height, attention or a place to scratch, and the evidence supplied here does not establish a laundry-specific scent as reliable.
- Keep products away from clothing unless the label specifically permits that use. Laundry touches skin and may be worn by children or people with sensitivities. Never improvise a concentration or application method.
- Stop if the cat shows distress. Hiding, avoiding the room or becoming more agitated means the method may be increasing anxiety. Remove the deterrent and return to access control and positive redirection.
A deterrent, if used at all, should support a physical barrier and an enrichment plan. It should not replace veterinary evaluation when clothing is being soiled.
When laundry is being soiled
Urination or defecation on clothing needs a separate plan. Cornell Feline Health Center guidance on house-soiling notes that medical causes are possible, so schedule a veterinary assessment rather than waiting for the behavior to disappear.

Review litter-box access and location
ASPCA advises placing litter boxes away from busy, loud or intimidating locations, including beside washers and dryers. Laundry equipment can startle a cat, vibrate, or make the box feel exposed. Assess whether the cat can reach the box without passing through a frightening area and whether household traffic or other animals can block the route.
Keep the review practical: note when accidents occur, which clothing is targeted, where each box is located and whether the cat hesitates before entering. Share those observations with the veterinarian. Do not interpret an accident as revenge, and do not move the box next to noisy appliances simply because that is where laundry is handled.
Protect clothing while the cause is investigated
Use the same access measures described earlier: closed doors, closed storage and a lidded hamper. These steps protect garments, but they do not diagnose or cure the reason for soiling. Continue the veterinary and litter-box review even if the accidents stop after the clothing becomes inaccessible.
Know when the problem is persistent
If soiling continues, spreads to other surfaces or returns after access is restricted, keep the veterinarian involved and consider professional behavior guidance through a qualified veterinary behavior service. Persistent accidents are a signal to investigate the cat’s health and environment, not to intensify punishment.
Troubleshoot the setup
“My cat opens the hamper.”
Watch exactly how it happens. If the lid lifts, replace it with a more secure closure or place the hamper behind a closed door. If the cat tips the container, use a heavier or anchored location and keep the opening away from launch points such as shelves or furniture. The goal is to remove access, not to create a contest the cat can win.

“My cat ignores the new bed.”
Keep laundry inaccessible while you test location, height, texture and privacy. Try one change at a time so you can tell what the cat prefers. Reinforce brief visits instead of waiting for an extended nap. A resting alternative is optional support; the closed-door, closed-storage or lidded-hamper barrier remains the dependable part of the plan.
“My cat returns as soon as I open the door.”
Assume the access rule is not yet consistent. Store clothing before opening the room, keep the hamper closed and provide play or another approved activity during sorting and folding. Everyone in the household should use the same routine; one unattended pile can maintain the habit.
“There are several cats.”
Provide enough separate resting, scratching and play opportunities that one cat cannot monopolize the only alternative. Observe whether one cat is blocking another from a perch or route to the litter box. For any soiling, include the multi-cat context in the veterinary discussion.
“I only need the cat off clean laundry, not dirty clothes.”
Use closed storage for clean garments and a lidded hamper for worn ones. Cats do not distinguish reliably between the two categories once a pile becomes an accessible, comfortable surface, so a consistent barrier is simpler than trying to teach an exception.
A simple routine that is easy to maintain
- Before starting laundry, close the room door or put the cat in another safe area.
- Sort and fold clothing on a surface the cat cannot access, or inside the closed room.
- Put clean items directly into drawers, cupboards or a wardrobe.
- Place worn items into the closed hamper and check that the lid is fully shut.
- Offer the cat its approved bed, scratching surface, perch or food puzzle.
- Reward calm use of the alternative and redirect without punishment if the cat approaches the laundry.
- Record any urination or defecation outside the box and contact a veterinarian for assessment.
This routine separates two jobs: barriers prevent access today, while enrichment and reinforcement make another choice worthwhile over time. If clothing is soiled, the veterinary and litter-box investigation takes priority over behavior products.
