How to Stop Cat Hair From Sticking to Clothes

A fabric-safe routine for removing cat hair before washing, using a cool dryer tumble when appropriate, cleaning laundry appliances and preventing freshly cleaned clothes from picking up fur again.

The fastest reliable routine is simple: remove fur while the garment is dry, use a short cool-air dryer tumble only when the care label allows it, then wash and dry normally. A clothes brush or lint roller handles visible hair; a clean, slightly damp rubber glove can help on suitable fabrics. Regular cat grooming and putting clean laundry away promptly prevent the next layer of hair.

Start with the garment dry

Water can make loose fur cling more tightly to some textiles, so begin before washing. Take the garment to an area where shed hair can be collected rather than shaken onto a bed, sofa or clean floor. Check the care label first, especially for wool, silk, structured garments, embellished items and anything marked dry-clean only.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Shake out loose fur. Hold the garment away from your body and give it a few firm shakes. This removes only the loosest hairs, but it reduces what your brush or roller has to collect.
  2. Brush or roll the surface. Work from the collar and shoulders toward the hem, using overlapping strokes. Turn the garment inside out and repeat on areas that touch your skin or other clothing.
  3. Inspect seams and textured areas. Cat hair often remains along cuffs, pockets, waistbands, hook-and-loop fasteners and woven texture. Use shorter strokes there instead of pressing harder over the whole garment.
  4. Collect the waste. Peel used adhesive sheets into the trash, or empty loose fur from a reusable brush before treating another item.

VCA Animal Hospitals cautions that a method suitable for one fabric may damage another. Test any damp or rubber tool on an inconspicuous area, and stop if the surface pills, stretches, loses color or develops a sheen.

Choose the removal tool that fits the garment

Method Best use Moisture or friction Reusable? Limitations
Clothes brush Routine removal from most sturdy clothing Dry; moderate brushing Usually yes May be unsuitable for delicate or loosely woven surfaces
Lint roller Fast touch-ups while dressing or packing Dry; light adhesive contact Depends on design Refill use creates waste; adhesive can pull at fragile fibers
Adhesive tape Small areas or an emergency substitute Dry; adhesive contact No Slow on large garments and potentially harsh on delicate finishes
Clean, slightly damp rubber glove Hair that resists dry brushing on compatible fabric Moisture and rubbing Yes Must be tested first; not appropriate for every care label
Cool-air or no-heat dryer tumble Loose hair on dryer-safe items before washing Air movement; no added heat Appliance-dependent Does not replace surface removal and requires lint-filter cleanup

The available guidance does not establish a universally best tool, a percentage of hair removed or a controlled ranking. Choose according to speed, fabric tolerance, disposability, access to a dryer and how much cleanup you are willing to do.

Clothes brush

FOUR PAWS recommends a clothes brush for most clothing. Lay the garment flat or hang it securely, then brush in one direction with moderate pressure. Several light passes are safer than one aggressive pass. Clean the brush when its bristles are loaded; otherwise it can redeposit hair on the next section.

A brush is a good default for jackets, trousers, cotton tops and other fabrics that tolerate ordinary brushing. For knits, brushed finishes, lace, sequins or anything with a raised nap, follow the label and test a hidden spot before treating the visible side.

Lint roller

A lint roller is useful when you need to leave the house quickly. Roll slowly over a small section, lifting the roller at the edge rather than grinding it back and forth. Replace or clean the sheet when it stops picking up hair. A roller can also reach around buttons and seams, but adhesive should never be assumed safe for every finish.

Tape in a pinch

Ordinary adhesive tape can substitute for a roller on a small patch. Wrap it around your hand with the sticky side out, press lightly, and lift. Do not drag it repeatedly over delicate fibers, printed surfaces or loose embellishments. Tape is an emergency technique, not an efficient way to process a full load of laundry.

Damp rubber glove

VCA lists a clean, slightly damp rubber glove as a reusable option. Put the glove on, dampen it lightly and wipe in one direction so hair gathers into rolls that you can lift away. The glove should be clean; residue from household cleaners can transfer to fabric. Because this technique adds moisture and friction, test a concealed area first and avoid it when the label or fabric finish does not tolerate either.

Use a cool dryer tumble before washing when appropriate

For garments that are explicitly dryer-safe and carry substantial loose hair, FOUR PAWS and Maytag describe a short cool-air or no-heat tumble before washing. Air movement can loosen hair so it reaches the lint filter instead of entering the wash water. This is an option, not a requirement, and it is not a substitute for brushing or rolling embedded fur.

  1. Read the garment label and your dryer manual. Do not place a dry-clean-only item or a heat-sensitive item in the dryer.
  2. Shake or brush off the most visible hair first. A dryer should deal with remaining loose fur, not a thick layer that could quickly load the filter.
  3. Select the appliance’s air-fluff, cool or no-heat setting, using the cycle described by your manual.
  4. Run a brief tumble, then remove the garments and inspect them. If hair remains, brush or roll it while dry rather than automatically repeating long cycles.
  5. Clean the lint filter immediately. Hair captured during this step must leave the appliance instead of being carried into the next load.

Dryer controls vary by model, so the owner’s manual takes precedence over generic labels. Never infer that a “low” or “delicate” setting is the same as no heat.

Wash and dry according to the care label

After dry removal, wash the garment using the label’s instructions for temperature, cycle, detergent and drying method. A wash cycle is not guaranteed to remove hair that is woven into the surface. If fur repeatedly survives laundering, increase the amount removed before washing and check the appliance for accumulated hair.

Before loading

  • Separate heavily fur-covered items from clothes that have little or no hair.
  • Close zippers and fasteners that can trap hair, while following the garment’s normal laundering instructions.
  • Do not overload the washer; crowded clothing gives loose hair fewer places to leave the fabric.
  • Inspect the washer drum, door seal and any accessible filter for visible buildup, following the appliance manual for cleaning.

After washing

Look at the garment before transferring it to the dryer. If hair is still obvious, remove it while the fabric is damp only if the material tolerates handling; otherwise let it dry and use a dry brush or roller. Put dryer-safe items in the dryer only under the label’s permitted setting, and clean the lint filter after the cycle. Air-dry items as directed, then inspect seams and dark surfaces in good light.

Maytag’s guidance emphasizes removing as much hair as possible before washing and cleaning the dryer filter. This protects the usefulness of the laundry routine without promising that any single cycle will make a fur-covered garment hair-free.

Keep clean clothes from picking up more hair

Contain laundry between washing and wearing

Put clean clothing away promptly instead of leaving it on a bed, sofa or floor. Those surfaces collect shed hair, and a clean shirt can pick it up again before you wear it. Use a closed drawer, wardrobe or other designated storage area that keeps freshly laundered items separate from places where the cat sleeps.

Create a fur-aware dressing area

Choose one place for brushing, rolling and folding clothes. Keep the tool there so the final inspection happens before you leave the room. If you dress near a favorite cat perch, move the clothing to a clean surface first; prevention is easier than removing a second layer of hair later.

Handle high-contact items first

Give extra attention to sleeves, trouser legs, shoulders, laps and the front of shirts—areas that contact upholstery, bedding or a cat’s coat. This is a prioritization strategy, not a claim that one textile or garment type is immune to hair.

Reduce the amount of loose hair available to spread

Regularly brushing the cat collects loose coat hair before it reaches clothing. FOUR PAWS and Maytag both include grooming in their prevention advice. Choose a grooming tool appropriate for your cat’s coat and follow the product directions; grooming should be calm and should not tug, scrape or irritate the skin. If your cat resists handling, stop rather than turning grooming into a struggle.

Grooming does not eliminate shedding. Its practical purpose is to collect some loose hair in a controlled place so less is available for bedding, upholstery and clothes. Dispose of the collected hair and clean the grooming tool after use so it does not become another source of transfer.

Use a schedule you can maintain

  • Before dressing: inspect dark or high-contact garments and use a brush or roller.
  • After a heavy-shedding session: groom the cat when it is relaxed and clean up the grooming area.
  • On laundry day: remove visible fur before loading and clean filters after drying.
  • When putting clothes away: do not leave clean items exposed on shared furniture.

The sources provide practical recommendations rather than a quantified schedule or a measured reduction in household hair, so adjust frequency to your cat, coat, season and tolerance for visible fur.

Pick clothing and tools by compatibility, not promises

FOUR PAWS suggests choosing clothes to which hair adheres less, but it does not provide a fabric ranking. Static, weave, texture, color and the cat’s coat all affect what you see. Instead of assuming a particular fiber is fur-proof, test how easily your own clothes release hair with a light brush stroke and choose the garments that are easiest to maintain for situations where visible fur matters.

For tools, consider the full routine rather than a single purchase:

  • Speed: a roller is convenient for a last-minute touch-up; a brush is practical for several garments.
  • Waste: reusable brushes and gloves avoid disposable sheets, while tape and replacement roller sheets create ongoing waste.
  • Fabric risk: adhesive, moisture and friction each require a care-label check and a hidden-area test.
  • Appliance access: a no-heat tumble is unavailable or unsuitable if you do not have a dryer or the item cannot be tumbled.
  • Cleanup: brushes, gloves, washer drums and lint filters must be emptied so collected hair does not return to clothing.

No independent comparison in the cited guidance proves that one commercial tool removes more fur than another. Treat category descriptions as practical options, not performance guarantees.

Troubleshoot persistent hair transfer

Hair is still visible after washing

The likely issue is that too much hair entered the washer. Let the item dry if needed, then use a brush or roller and inspect the washer drum and door seal for buildup. On the next load, remove more fur before washing and avoid mixing heavily coated garments with clean-looking items.

Hair appears after the dryer

Clean the lint filter and check whether the load or filter is carrying accumulated fur. Confirm that the selected cycle matches the care label. If a garment is not dryer-safe, switch to the label’s drying method and complete removal while the item is dry.

The tool damages the fabric

Stop immediately. Do not compensate by pressing harder or adding moisture. Recheck the care label, test a gentler method on a concealed section and reserve adhesive or rubbing for fabrics that demonstrably tolerate it. Delicate or valuable items may need professional cleaning advice.

Hair returns as soon as the garment is clean

Look at storage and contact surfaces rather than repeating the wash. Clean laundry left on a bed, sofa or floor can pick up hair again. Put it away promptly and perform the final brush-or-roll step at the point where you dress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cat sheds unusually or develops skin problems

Hair-removal techniques address clothing, not the cause of shedding. If shedding changes suddenly or you notice bald patches, itching, redness or other illness signs, ask a veterinary professional for advice.

A practical decision path

  1. Is the garment dry and washable? Remove hair dry first. If it is dry-clean only or highly delicate, follow that care route instead of experimenting.
  2. Is the fur loose and the item dryer-safe? A short cool/no-heat tumble may help, followed by lint-filter cleaning.
  3. Does visible hair remain? Use a clothes brush or lint roller; use tape only for a small emergency area.
  4. Does dry removal fail on a compatible fabric? Test a clean, slightly damp rubber glove on a hidden area and wipe gently.
  5. Does hair keep coming back? Inspect storage, shared surfaces, grooming habits, washer drum and dryer filter before changing detergents or repeating cycles.

Safety and care-label checklist

  • Read the garment label before brushing aggressively, adding moisture or using a dryer.
  • Test unfamiliar tools in a hidden area, especially on dark, delicate, coated or textured fabrics.
  • Use a clean glove with no household-cleaner residue.
  • Never treat a cool or low setting as proof that an item is dryer-safe.
  • Clean the lint filter after any hair-heavy tumble and maintain the washer according to its manual.
  • Keep adhesive tools away from surfaces that can snag, peel or lose a finish.
  • Stop grooming or fabric treatment if the cat or garment shows signs of distress or damage.

What this routine can—and cannot—do

Dry brushing or rolling, optional cool-air tumbling, label-compliant laundering and prompt storage form a realistic system for controlling cat hair on clothes. The system reduces visible and loose fur; it does not guarantee a completely hair-free wardrobe, and the available guidance does not provide a measured removal rate or a universal winner among tools. Results depend on the garment, the type and amount of fur, appliance design and how quickly clean clothes are exposed to the cat’s environment.

Start with the least invasive method that works for the fabric, remove hair before it reaches the washer, and treat prevention—grooming and protected storage—as part of laundry rather than as separate chores.
