Keep the rule consistent across everyone in the household. Calm redirection and rewards teach where to rest; scolding or physical punishment can make the couch rule feel threatening without showing the dog what to do instead.
Why your dog chooses the couch
A couch may be warm and comfortable, keep your dog close to you, or offer a good view. The goal is not just to make the couch unavailable; it is to make an allowed resting place meet the same needs.
If your dog climbs up to watch the outdoors, reduce the view by closing drapes or blinds. AKC GoodDog! Helpline Program Manager Penny Leigh recommends blocking window access when that is the attraction. Put the dog’s alternative resting spot somewhere appealing, such as near the couch or beside the window if that location is still suitable.
Choose an appealing place to rest
Use a dog bed or mat if furniture is off-limits altogether. A chair deliberately reserved for the dog can work if that fits your household rule, but it may blur the boundary if the dog is expected to stay off all furniture. Choose a spot your dog is willing to use, near the family or another place it already likes to settle.

- Add a familiar blanket or a safe chew toy, if appropriate.
- Make the spot comfortable enough to compete with the couch.
- Use food, praise, petting, or play to reward your dog there; treats are optional.
Teach a “bed” or “place” cue
- Start when your dog is calm. Practice with the couch less tempting and the bed or mat ready.
- Guide your dog onto the spot. Lure the dog onto it, reward the dog for getting on, then reward a down if that is the behavior you want.
- Add the cue once the behavior is familiar. Say “bed” or “place” as your dog goes to the spot, then reward settling there.
- Use a release word. After a short successful stay, say a consistent word such as “free” to signal that the exercise has ended.
- Build gradually. Increase either the time on the bed or your distance from it in small steps, rather than making both harder at once. If your dog keeps leaving, shorten the stay or move closer, then build up again.
Training takes practice and consistency; there is no reliable fixed timeline for every dog. Keep early sessions manageable so the dog can succeed.
Redirect calmly when your dog gets on the couch
If your dog approaches or climbs onto the couch, calmly cue “bed” or “place” if the dog can respond. Reward the dog for settling on the alternative spot. AKC’s guidance also describes silently taking the dog to its designated spot and rewarding it there. Avoid scolding, startling, or turning the moment into a dramatic interaction.

Prevent unsupervised couch practice
While the new behavior is weak, use supervision or temporary access management to stop the dog from repeatedly rehearsing the couch habit. Close the room, use a suitable barrier, or keep the dog with you when you cannot supervise. Choose the least disruptive option that reliably works in your home. These measures support training; they do not replace teaching the dog where to settle.
Make the rule clear to everyone
Decide whether the couch is never allowed or allowed only by invitation. This approach focuses on a never-allowed rule. If you choose invitation-only access instead, use a clear cue and apply the boundary consistently.

Tell family members, pet sitters, and dog walkers the rule and the cue words. If someone sometimes invites the dog onto the couch while others prohibit it, the dog receives conflicting information about what is allowed.

The ASPCA says humane training makes primary use of lures and rewards such as food, praise, petting, and play, and supports methods grounded in kindness and respect for both pet and guardian. It opposes training equipment that causes physical discomfort or undue anxiety. If your dog is showing severe emotional distress, or you are concerned it may injure itself, another animal, or a person, seek help from a qualified behavior professional. When you need a trainer, the ASPCA recommends independently credentialed trainers if trusted referrals are unavailable.
