Yes—you can ask friends and family to donate to an animal charity instead of buying birthday gifts by creating a Facebook birthday fundraiser. The fundraiser creates a donation page tied to a nonprofit you select; your title, story and photo explain why that organization matters to you.
Open Facebook’s Fundraisers area, search for an eligible animal nonprofit, set the requested goal and end date, add a personal appeal and cover image, then publish and share it. Availability, payment handling and tax treatment vary by country and charity, so verify the details shown in your account and the organization’s current guidance before inviting donors.

What a Facebook birthday fundraiser does
A birthday fundraiser is a Facebook-hosted page that lets people contribute to a nonprofit rather than send you a present. You choose the beneficiary from Facebook’s charity directory, give the fundraiser a target and closing date when those fields are offered, and explain the connection between your birthday and the cause. Friends can donate through the page and see the progress toward the goal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe money is intended for the selected nonprofit, not for your personal account. The charity’s name should appear on the fundraiser before you publish it, giving you an opportunity to check that you selected the correct organization. Fundraisers are useful for a personal, time-limited appeal, but they do not replace the charity’s own donation page or its published information about receipts, restrictions and programs.

Meta said in 2018 that more than $300 million had been raised through Facebook birthday fundraisers during their first year and listed the ASPCA among the top beneficiaries. That is historical, company-reported context—not a current total or a promise about what any individual campaign will raise. In the same announcement, then Head of Product, Social Good Asha Sharma wrote, “Many people have told us that they want to dedicate their birthdays to a good cause.”
Check availability before planning your appeal
Facebook’s fundraiser tools are not identical in every country, account or charity. Cancer Research UK, for example, says Facebook fundraising is not available in every location. A nonprofit may also be absent from the search results even when it operates in your area. Treat the fundraiser composer in your own account as the practical availability check.
Confirm the feature in your account
- Sign in to Facebook on the web or open the mobile app.
- Open facebook.com/fundraisers in a browser, or use the Fundraisers bookmark/menu item in the app if it appears.
- Choose the option to create a fundraiser or start a birthday fundraiser. Labels can differ by location and app version.
- Use the charity search field. If the creation flow does not appear, or the organization cannot be found, the feature may not be enabled for your location or account.
Confirm the nonprofit
Search by the organization’s exact name and inspect its profile details, logo and location. Animal charities can have similar names, and a local branch may be a separate legal entity from a national organization. If the charity’s own website or social page sends you to Facebook, follow that link only after checking that the destination identifies the same nonprofit. Do not assume that every animal shelter, rescue group or crowdfunding page is an eligible Facebook nonprofit.

Facebook’s search list is a technical eligibility filter, not an impact ranking. Use the questions below to compare organizations without implying that one rescue saves more animals than another.
| Question | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Is it selectable? | The organization appears in your Facebook fundraiser search and its legal or public name matches the intended beneficiary. |
| Does location permit it? | The fundraiser composer works in your country and does not display a regional restriction. |
| Does its mission fit? | Read the charity’s current description to confirm whether it focuses on rescue, shelters, veterinary care, wildlife rehabilitation, cruelty prevention or another cause you want to support. |
| How are donations handled? | Look for the charity’s explanation of receipts, processing, restricted gifts and whether it directs donors to a separate giving page. |
| Can donors verify status? | Check the organization’s legal identity and any charitable-registration information relevant to your country before promising a tax benefit. |
The IRS lists certain organizations that work to prevent cruelty to animals among organizations that may qualify for deductible gifts in the United States. That does not make every group in a Facebook search deductible, and it does not determine treatment in another country.
Set up the fundraiser step by step
1. Open the creation flow
From Fundraisers, select the birthday-fundraiser option, if offered. Facebook may also surface the tool from a birthday reminder or a charity’s page. If a charity-specific link opens the composer, confirm that the beneficiary shown is the organization you intended.
2. Select and recheck the beneficiary
Type the nonprofit’s name, review the results and select the matching entry. Pause on the confirmation screen. Check spelling, location and logo, because changing the beneficiary after publication may not be possible without starting over. If your preferred group is missing, ask the charity whether it has a Facebook-eligible listing; do not substitute an unrelated organization simply to make the tool work.
3. Enter a realistic target
Use the goal field supplied by Facebook and choose an amount that fits the people you are likely to reach. A target is an invitation, not a guarantee. Avoid claims such as “$50 saves three animals” unless the selected charity currently publishes that exact, attributable information. If the form does not request a target or allows a different format, follow the fields displayed rather than copying an older tutorial.
4. Choose an end date
Set a closing date when the form asks for one. A date that includes your birthday and a short period afterward gives friends time to see the post without leaving an open-ended appeal. Charity guidance and Red Cross instructions describe a target and end date as common parts of the setup, but the exact controls can vary. Note the date in your own calendar so you know when to send a final reminder.
5. Write the title and story
Make the title immediately identify the cause, such as “Help local shelter animals for my birthday.” In the story, explain three things: why animals or this organization matter to you, what you are asking friends to do, and when the fundraiser ends. A specific memory—adopting a senior dog, volunteering at a shelter or caring about wildlife—usually sounds more credible than a generic slogan.
Keep the request clear that donations are optional. If you prefer gifts to be replaced by contributions, say “If you were planning a birthday gift, please consider donating to this animal charity instead.” Do not imply that friends owe you a payment or that a particular donation guarantees a medical outcome.

6. Add a suitable cover image
Choose a photo you own or have permission to use, such as an animal you adopted or a volunteer image approved by the charity. Avoid graphic injury images, identifiable people who have not consented, shelter intake paperwork, addresses, phone numbers and photos that reveal an animal’s location. A clear, relevant image helps friends recognize the appeal without creating a privacy or licensing problem.
7. Review every field and publish
Before selecting Create or Publish, read the preview as a donor would. Verify the beneficiary, title, target, end date, spelling, image and any suggested donation language. Check whether Facebook displays a processing notice, currency or regional disclosure. Once the details are correct, publish the fundraiser.

Invite friends without sounding demanding
Facebook may offer an invite button immediately after publication. Send invitations selectively rather than tagging every contact. A personal note can explain why you chose the organization and make clear that sharing is welcome even when donating is not possible.
- State the purpose in the first sentence: “For my birthday, I’m raising money for an animal rescue instead of receiving gifts.”
- Give the deadline and link to the fundraiser page.
- Say that any amount—or simply sharing—helps.
- Thank people without announcing individual donation amounts.
Post once when the fundraiser opens, once near the middle if interest is low, and a final reminder before the closing date. Space reminders so people who already saw the first post do not feel pressured. Answer questions in the fundraiser comments without publishing donor contact details.

Understand fees and where the money goes
Do not make a blanket statement that every Facebook fundraiser is free. Meta’s 2018 announcements described nonprofit donation fees as waived at that time and said personal fundraisers could involve processing fees and applicable taxes. An August 2018 Meta report said 100% of donations to nonprofits on Facebook went to nonprofits after Meta waived fees in November 2017. Those dated statements do not establish a universal current policy for every country, currency, payment method or fundraiser type.
International Animal Rescue currently says, in its own Facebook-fundraiser context, “We receive 100% of all donations as Facebook do not charge any processing fees.” That is the charity’s statement about its situation; it is not proof that the same arrangement applies to another nonprofit or location. Read the fee and receipt information displayed at checkout and the selected charity’s current donor guidance. If a fee is shown, explain it accurately rather than promising that the nonprofit receives the full amount.
Tax receipts and deductions
A Facebook donation is not automatically tax-deductible. The Red Cross says a donation through a Facebook fundraiser may be tax-deductible, while the IRS explains that deductibility depends on giving to a qualified organization and following applicable rules. Your country, the charity’s legal status, the donor’s tax residence and the type of receipt all matter.
Tell donors to keep the confirmation they receive and ask the charity how receipts are issued. They should consult the relevant tax authority or a qualified tax professional for personal advice. As the fundraiser organizer, do not label every contribution “tax-deductible” unless the charity and applicable law explicitly support that wording.

The charity does not appear
Check spelling and try the charity’s registered or alternate public name. Confirm that the organization is eligible in your location and that you are using the current account and app. If it still does not appear, contact the charity through its official channel and use its own donation page instead of directing money to an unverified substitute.
The Fundraisers option is missing
Try the web address, the app’s menu and a current version of the app. A missing option can reflect country restrictions, account eligibility or a platform change. Do not claim that a workaround will unlock the feature; use a direct charity link when Facebook cannot create the fundraiser.
The currency, fee or receipt looks different
Stop before publishing and read the disclosure on your screen. Currency and payment processing can vary by donor location. Ask the charity which records it can provide, and describe only what the actual donation flow confirms.
Friends cannot donate
Ask one trusted friend in the same region to test the page. A donor’s country, payment method or platform availability may prevent a contribution even when the fundraiser is visible. Share the charity’s approved alternative donation route only if the organization provides one, and never request card details in comments or private messages.

Use Facebook’s edit controls if they are available, then check the public preview. If the beneficiary or a fundamental setting is wrong and cannot be edited, contact Facebook support or end the fundraiser and create a corrected one. Tell invitees clearly which page is valid so donations are not split between two appeals.
Close the fundraiser responsibly
When the end date arrives, post a thank-you message and report the final amount only as Facebook displays it. Do not reveal donor names or amounts without permission. Keep the confirmation and any charity correspondence for your records, and direct questions about receipts, restrictions or program use to the nonprofit. If the charity publishes an update about the campaign, share that update rather than inventing an outcome.
A birthday fundraiser works best when the beneficiary is verified, the appeal is personal, the deadline is visible and every claim about fees, tax and animal impact is limited to what Facebook and the charity currently document. Those checks let friends support the cause with a clear understanding of what their donation can and cannot guarantee.
