To leave pets home safely, prepare the space, make sure each animal has access to what it needs, and build up alone time gradually. There is no single safe number of hours that applies to every dog or cat. Watch how your pet responds—and never leave a dog and cat together unsupervised.
Pet-proof the space before you go
Walk through every room your pet can reach at their height, looking for hazards to chew, swallow, knock over, or get tangled in. Secure electrical and dangling curtain cords, and use sturdy screens to secure open windows. Move candles and small objects out of reach.

If you suspect a pet has swallowed or contacted a corrosive product, seek veterinary care immediately. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian tells you to. ASPCA Poison Control reported more than 376,000 items pets were exposed to in 2025; over-the-counter medications and supplements made up 16.9% of reported exposures. These are Poison Control call figures, not rates for the pet population. See the ASPCA’s 2025 toxin summary.

Set up a comfortable, safe area
Choose a space where your pet can rest without access to hazards. Make sure it has the resources appropriate to that animal, such as water, a resting place, and—when needed—food and a clean litter tray. A gate can create separate areas, but only use confinement if the animal stays comfortable and cannot injure themselves trying to get out.
Decide whether a crate or gate is suitable
A crate can be a safe resting place for a dog who is already comfortable in it. It is not a default solution for distress. Watch for panting, salivation, persistent vocalizing, or frantic escape attempts. A dog with separation anxiety may hurt themselves trying to escape a crate, as VCA Animal Hospitals explains. If confinement triggers panic, use a safer area or arrange care rather than forcing the dog to remain crated.

Practice leaving for periods short enough that your pet remains relaxed. Increase the time only while they continue to cope comfortably; if distress appears, shorten the next practice rather than pushing through it. Keep departures low-key, and use a familiar routine for feeding and play.

Enrichment may occupy some animals, but it is not a cure for anxiety. A food-stuffed puzzle toy can help with counterconditioning for some dogs with mild separation anxiety, but a highly anxious dog may refuse food. For cats, safe toys, boxes, and puzzle feeders can add stimulation. Check that an item is appropriate for unsupervised use and that your pet can use it without risk.
Recognize possible separation-related distress in dogs
Signs that can occur when a dog is left alone include persistent barking or howling, pacing, chewing or digging at doors and windows, escape attempts, or urinating and defecating only during absences. Escape behavior can cause injury. These signs do not prove separation anxiety: boredom, outside noises, incomplete house training, confinement anxiety, or a medical condition can also be involved.

If house-soiling is new or comes with other health changes, consult a veterinarian before treating it as a behavior problem. Avoid punishment for behavior that happens while you are away; anxious behavior is a sign of distress, not deliberate disobedience. The ASPCA’s separation-anxiety guidance describes gradual desensitization: keep absences shorter than the time it takes for anxiety to begin, then extend them only as the dog stays relaxed. For moderate or severe distress, seek help from a veterinarian, veterinary behaviorist, or appropriately qualified behavior professional. A sitter, friend, or other care arrangement can prevent overwhelming absences during retraining.

Watch for changes in cats
Cats may be comfortable on their own, but a changed routine can be stressful for some. Possible signs include restlessness, excessive meowing, startling, refusing food, hiding, toileting outside the litter tray, excessive scratching, or, in extreme cases, vomiting or diarrhea. A camera can help you observe what happens while you are away, but it cannot diagnose the cause. Consult a veterinarian if your cat’s behavior changes, since illness may be responsible.

Keep feeding and play routines as consistent as possible, and offer safe toys, boxes, and a secure resting place. Practice brief absences and keep departures calm. Outdoor access, including a cat flap, is appropriate only where it is safe for that particular cat and setting. See Cats Protection’s guidance on cats and separation anxiety.
Keep dogs and cats separated when no one is home
Do not leave a dog and cat alone together, even if they have lived together peacefully. Cats Protection advises supervising them together and maintaining a cat territory with high places or a dog-free zone. During introductions, give the cat a separate safe area; after integration, a suitable gate or internal cat flap may help preserve access to that retreat. Its cat-introduction guidance sets out this separation approach.
When to arrange another kind of care
If your pet cannot stay relaxed for the absence you need, or confinement and separation from you trigger panic, do not rely on toys or a camera to make the situation safe. Arrange a trusted person or suitable care setting while you work with a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional on a gradual plan. Choose the arrangement based on your animal’s observed comfort, safety, and access to needed resources.
