How to Make a Dog-Safe Nativity Scene at Home

Build a safer nativity display by keeping it stable and out of reach, choosing sturdy pieces, using flameless LED candles, avoiding loose strings and live greenery, and checking the scene throughout the holidays.

A dog-safe nativity scene is one your dog cannot reach, pull down, chew, or investigate. Put the display on a broad, stable elevated surface; use sturdy, non-breakable figures; remove loose strings, wires, and detachable parts; keep batteries inaccessible; choose artificial greenery; and use battery-operated flameless LED candles instead of open flames. This reduces risk, but no nativity material should be treated as safe for chewing.

Start with the safety principle: distance and stability

The safest nativity scene is arranged so your dog has no physical opportunity to nose it, paw it, knock it over, or pull an item down. Holiday decorations can become dangerous when a curious dog reaches them, even if each piece seems harmless on its own. The ASPCA’s holiday safety guidance and the American Kennel Club’s dog-friendly decorating advice both emphasize keeping hazardous décor out of pets’ reach.

Choose a genuinely inaccessible location

  • Prefer a sturdy wall shelf, built-in ledge, or substantial table that your dog cannot reach by standing, jumping, or using nearby furniture as a step.
  • Keep the display away from sofas, ottomans, stacked boxes, stairs, and other launch points.
  • Check the surface for wobble before decorating. A shelf that shifts when brushed, or a table that rocks on one leg, is not a suitable base.
  • Make sure the supporting furniture is itself secure and cannot tip if a dog bumps it.
  • Leave enough clearance from the edge that a small nudge will not send a figure onto the floor.

Height alone is not a guarantee. A large dog may reach higher than expected, and a small dog can sometimes climb onto furniture. Measure your dog’s reach from the floor and from any nearby surface, then place the lowest part of the scene beyond that zone. If your dog can still get close enough to disturb it, move the display or remove it.

Account for the dog you actually have

A calm adult dog and a young, toy-driven puppy require different margins. Consider jumping, climbing, chewing, tail sweeping, pawing, and the tendency to grab objects that smell interesting. A dog that ignores decorations during the day may investigate them when left alone or when the household is busy. Treat access as the deciding factor rather than assuming the dog will continue to ignore the scene.

Select figures and structures that will not create breakage hazards

There is no published nativity-specific certification that proves a particular figurine or set is safe for a dog. Instead, select pieces that are difficult to break and remove anything with a part your dog could reach and swallow.

Prefer sturdy, simple figures

  • Choose solid wood, thick resin, or another robust construction for an elevated display. These suggestions describe practical durability, not a guarantee that the material is safe to chew.
  • Avoid thin glass, brittle ceramic, hollow pieces that shatter easily, and figures with delicate projections.
  • Inspect each figure for loose halos, staffs, crowns, animals, stars, magnets, or other detachable details.
  • Do not use a piece that is already cracked, chipped, splintered, or unstable on its base.
  • Arrange figures so they are not touching one another in a way that makes one fall if another is bumped.

The ASPCA warns that shards from breakable ornaments can injure the mouth and digestive tract. VCA Animal Hospitals likewise describes cuts and internal damage from broken glass in its holiday-toxin and decoration guidance. Keeping fragile items physically inaccessible is more reliable than trying to identify which ones a dog might tolerate.

Eliminate small detachable and chewable parts

Remove miniature ropes, twine, ribbon, tinsel, strings, faux snow that can be pulled loose, and decorative moss that is not firmly attached. Swallowed string-like material can become a linear foreign body: VCA explains that ribbon, tinsel, and twine may lodge in the intestines and cause serious injury. A display with many tiny accessories is harder to inspect and easier for a dog to dismantle.

Choose flameless lighting instead of an open flame

For a candlelit appearance, use battery-operated flameless LED candles or flameless LED tea lights. The AKC recommends battery-operated candles as an alternative when a real flame could be within a dog’s reach. The ASPCA also cautions that unattended candles can be knocked over, causing burns or a fire.

Real candles versus flameless LEDs

Option Primary access hazard Chewing or swallowing concern Knock-over consequence Practical choice
Real candle Open flame and hot wax A dog may reach the candle, holder, or melted wax Burns or fire if tipped; never leave it unattended Do not use where a dog could reach or disturb it
Battery-operated flameless LED Battery compartment must remain inaccessible Loose batteries or a damaged casing can be dangerous Usually avoids an open flame, but a falling unit can still break or become a chew target Preferred for a dog-accessible room when installed out of reach

Install and inspect LED candles correctly

  1. Read the candle’s instructions and confirm the battery compartment closes securely.
  2. Place the candle where the dog cannot reach the unit or its switch.
  3. Keep spare batteries, packaging, and removed batteries in a closed container or locked cabinet.
  4. Check for cracks, a loose cover, exposed contacts, or a compartment that opens without resistance.
  5. Remove any light with a damaged housing rather than taping it and returning it to the display.

The ASPCA warns that punctured batteries can burn a pet’s mouth and esophagus. A flameless candle is safer than an open flame only when the battery and the device remain inaccessible and intact.

Use artificial greenery and treat plants as a separate risk

For the simplest low-access arrangement, use faux greenery. Keep live holly, mistletoe, and other seasonal plants out of a dog’s reach. The ASPCA recommends placing floral decorations beyond pet access or replacing traditional plants with artificial alternatives.

Why “holiday plant” is not one risk category

Plant effects differ by species and amount eaten. The AKC’s veterinary guidance says poinsettia ingestion in dogs generally causes mild signs, but that does not make the plant suitable for a dog-accessible display. Other seasonal plants can pose more serious hazards, and a dog may chew a stem, leaf, or fallen piece even when the main arrangement is elevated. Faux greenery removes the need to identify every plant and reduces the chance of dropped leaves becoming a snack.

Make faux greenery secure

  • Choose artificial branches without loose wire tips, detachable berries, or brittle coatings.
  • Trim or remove pieces that can be pulled free from the base.
  • Do not drape garland over the shelf edge where a dog can tug it.
  • Keep artificial “snow,” glitter, and flocking from shedding onto the floor.
  • Check the arrangement after moving furniture, vacuuming, or opening nearby doors.

A step-by-step build sequence

Assemble the scene before the holiday rush, when you can test the location and inspect every component.

  1. Survey the room. Identify the dog’s normal routes, favorite jumping points, and any furniture that could provide extra height.
  2. Pick the base. Use a broad, sturdy shelf or table that does not wobble and cannot tip when brushed.
  3. Test access. With the surface empty, observe whether your dog can reach it from the floor or nearby furniture. Choose another location if access is possible.
  4. Inspect every figure. Reject cracked, fragile, unstable, or loosely assembled pieces. Remove detachable details and all string-like decoration.
  5. Plan the layout. Keep figures well inside the edge, leave space between them, and place heavier pieces low on the display surface so the arrangement is balanced.
  6. Add faux greenery. Use artificial branches that do not shed loose parts, and keep garland away from the edge.
  7. Add flameless LEDs. Install batteries according to the product instructions, close each compartment, and put the candles where the dog cannot reach them.
  8. Inspect the floor. Remove packaging, spare batteries, wire trimmings, dropped leaves, and every loose piece before allowing the dog back into the room.
  9. Supervise the first sessions. Watch for staring, pawing, jumping, pulling, or attempts to climb. The first sign of access or disturbance means the display needs to move.
  10. Recheck daily. Look for shifted figures, fallen greenery, opened battery covers, and new access created by a moved chair or box.

Keep cords, wires, and strings out of the arrangement

Electrical cords and decorative wires should not run where a dog can reach them. VCA notes that chewing electrical cords or lights can cause electrical burns or electrocution. Route any necessary cable behind furniture, use a protected outlet, and keep the plug and excess cord beyond the dog’s access. Do not rely on a dog’s previous good behavior around cables.

Do not substitute ribbon, tinsel, twine, or fishing line for a missing support. These materials can be pulled loose and swallowed. If a decoration needs a tie to stay upright, use a design that does not require an exposed loop or relocate the whole scene.

Secure the display without creating a new hazard

A stable elevated surface is the first line of defense. Depending on the room, you may also secure the furniture to the wall using an appropriate anti-tip method, provided the installation follows the furniture and hardware instructions. Avoid improvised restraints that leave a loop, cord, or dangling strap within reach.

  • Keep heavy figures low and centered rather than on a narrow front edge.
  • Use a non-slip base under the scene if it does not create an exposed corner or loose material.
  • Do not stack boxes, books, or wrapped gifts beneath the display if they give the dog a step.
  • Leave a clear area around the shelf so a wagging tail or passing person is less likely to strike it.

Supervise, then adjust to what you observe

Supervision is a test of the setup, not proof that the dog has been trained to leave it alone. Watch the dog approach the room, especially during the first few days and whenever the display changes. Redirect calmly and increase distance if the dog shows interest. Do not punish an investigation and then leave the same reachable hazard in place.

If your dog can reach the lowest figure, pull greenery from the edge, jump against the furniture, or repeatedly stare and lunge, move the scene higher or remove it. A barrier can help temporarily, but it must not be climbable, chewable, or positioned so the dog can knock the display over through it.

What to do if something breaks or goes missing

Broken glass or ceramic

Keep the dog out of the room immediately. Pick up large pieces with gloves, sweep and vacuum the area, and inspect under furniture and along the display edge. Do not return a repaired piece to the scene if it remains brittle or has a sharp edge. VCA and the ASPCA both identify broken decoration as a mouth and digestive-tract hazard.

Chewed cord or light

Disconnect power safely without touching a damaged wire with wet hands. Remove the dog from the area and seek veterinary advice promptly if there may have been an electrical shock or burn. Replace the damaged light or cord; do not cover exposed damage and continue using it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Missing battery, string, or plant material

Assume the dog may have swallowed it if you cannot account for the item. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you to do so. If a dog may have ingested a poisonous substance, the ASPCA advises contacting a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control immediately; use the current contact details on the ASPCA holiday safety page. Bring the product packaging or a photograph of the plant when available.

Real candles and live greenery: when the answer is simply “no”

Some homes cannot create enough distance for an open flame or a live plant. If your dog can reach the shelf, climb onto the furniture, or roam unsupervised near the scene, do not use real candles or accessible live greenery. A flameless LED arrangement with faux branches is the lower-risk alternative, and a display-free room is safer than a setup that the dog can repeatedly disturb.

Situation Recommended response
Dog cannot reach a stable shelf; figures are intact and simple Use sturdy figures, faux greenery, and inaccessible flameless LEDs; inspect regularly
Dog can reach the shelf from a sofa or chair Move the display or remove the nearby furniture; do not depend on supervision alone
Dog chews cords, fabric, or small objects Exclude wires and loose décor entirely and choose a higher, simpler display
Dog is a persistent climber or the furniture cannot be secured Use a closed, inaccessible room or skip the floor-level nativity scene
Any item is damaged, loose, or unaccounted for Remove the item, search the area, and address possible ingestion promptly

A final inspection checklist

  • The shelf or table is broad, stable, and beyond the dog’s reach.
  • Nearby furniture cannot be used as a step.
  • Figures are sturdy, intact, and free of detachable details.
  • No glass, brittle ceramic, tinsel, ribbon, twine, or loose string is accessible.
  • No cord, wire, plug, or light string is within reach.
  • Every candle is flameless, intact, and has an inaccessible battery compartment.
  • Greenery is artificial and does not shed pieces or expose wire ends.
  • The floor is free of packaging, spare batteries, fallen leaves, and small parts.
  • The dog has been observed near the finished scene without being able to disturb it.
  • The arrangement is rechecked after cleaning, furniture changes, or any sign of interest.

What “dog-safe” means in practice

“Dog-safe” describes a controlled setup, not a promise that a figurine, plant, battery, or candle is harmless to chew. The available holiday-safety guidance does not test or certify particular nativity sets. The dependable approach is to prevent access, remove breakable and string-like components, keep batteries and electricity away from teeth, use faux greenery, and respond immediately when the arrangement is damaged or a piece disappears.
