You can make useful DIY dog toys from ordinary household items: roll kibble in a towel, hide food in a muffin tin, or let your dog sniff through a clean cardboard box. Start with an easy food- or scent-based activity, supervise your dog closely, and remove anything they chew apart or try to swallow.
What makes a good DIY dog toy?
The best homemade activity matches your individual dog. Many dogs enjoy working to find food or a familiar toy, even if they show little interest in conventional toys. Food and scent games are adaptable because you can make them easier or harder without adding complicated parts. The American Animal Hospital Association describes enrichment as a way to support pets’ mental and emotional wellbeing at home (AAHA enrichment guidance).

Use a portion of your dog’s usual meal when practical. Humane Society Silicon Valley recommends keeping treats to around 10% of a pet’s daily calories in its 2026 Summer Enrichment Guide; this is that organization’s practical guidance, not a universal prescription. Introduce new ingredients gradually, and ask your veterinarian about food activities if your dog has dietary or health restrictions.

Easy DIY dog toys and enrichment activities
1. Roll kibble in a towel
- Spread a clean towel flat and scatter a small portion of kibble over it.
- Roll or loosely fold the towel so food is easy to find at first.
- Set it down and let your dog nose it open. Add folds only if your dog understands the game and does not chew or eat the fabric.
A towel is a simple household alternative to a snuffle mat. Keep the first version loose; tighter folds make the food harder to reach. This activity is best for dogs that search with their noses rather than shred or swallow cloth. Humane Society Silicon Valley and Atlanta Humane Society both describe towel-based food enrichment (HSSV; Atlanta Humane Society).

2. Make a muffin-tin puzzle
- Put a few pieces of kibble in some cups of a clean muffin tin.
- Cover the filled cups with tennis balls that your dog cannot swallow.
- Let your dog move the balls to uncover the food, staying nearby to intervene if they chew a ball or the tin.
Keep the first round straightforward, then add covered cups if your dog is comfortable with the puzzle. Do not use this setup if your dog mouths or swallows the balls.
3. Turn a cardboard box into a sniff-and-search activity
- Choose a plain cardboard box or paper tube that is an appropriate size for your dog.
- Remove tape, stickers, staples, and any glue or loose pieces you can safely remove.
- Place a few pieces of kibble inside, then supervise while your dog sniffs and investigates.
Let your dog search, not eat the packaging. Stop and take the box away if your dog begins swallowing cardboard or tearing off pieces. Humane Society Silicon Valley and Atlanta Humane Society describe cardboard food activities, with supervision essential for improvised materials (HSSV; Atlanta Humane Society).

Keep hiding spots accessible and safe, and supervise any new object used in play. The ASPCA includes scent-based activities in its canine DIY enrichment guidance.

6. Make a supervised flirt pole
The ASPCA lists a 1-inch PVC pipe or broom handle, rope, and a dog toy as materials for a flirt pole (ASPCA instructions). Use it for interactive play, not as a chew toy: check the assembly for loose or chewable parts, keep the toy moving where your dog can chase it safely, and put it away after play.
How to choose an activity for your dog
| Activity | Best fit | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Rolled towel | Dogs that enjoy sniffing and unrolling | Chewing or swallowing fabric |
| Muffin tin and tennis balls | Dogs that can move balls without chewing them | Swallowing or damaging a ball |
| Cardboard search | Dogs that investigate without eating packaging | Ingested cardboard, tape, stickers, or loose parts |
| Scattered food or a snuffle mat | Dogs that forage calmly | Chewing the mat or searching an unsafe area |
| “Find it” game | Dogs that enjoy using their nose to locate food or a familiar toy | Unsafe hiding places or unsuitable objects |
| Flirt pole | Dogs that enjoy interactive chasing with a person | Loose parts, chewing, or unsafe play |
This is a practical matching guide, not a controlled comparison. If your dog tends to destroy or swallow objects, favor a supervised search game using food directly on a safe surface rather than a homemade object.

Safety rules for homemade dog toys
- Supervise new activities. The Humane Society Silicon Valley Behavior Team advises: “To keep your pets safe, anything new should be supervised at first, and all enrichment toys should be sized to the pet.” The ASPCA likewise calls for close, active supervision while DIY items are accessible (HSSV; ASPCA).
- Choose objects too large to swallow. There is no universally safe homemade toy; size and suitability depend on the dog and the item. Do not offer small balls, loose parts, or other materials your dog could ingest.
- Stop if your dog tries to eat a non-food item. Remove fabric, cardboard, rope, balls, or other material if your dog is swallowing it rather than interacting safely. Swallowed objects can cause an intestinal obstruction (American Humane Society).
- Inspect and discard damaged items. Take away a toy when it breaks apart, develops loose pieces, or has sections torn off. Atlanta Humane Society summarizes its advice plainly: “All toys should be given with supervision” (Atlanta Humane Society).
- Keep food ingredients dog-safe. For frozen treats, Humane Society Silicon Valley advises avoiding xylitol, chocolate, grapes or raisins, onion or garlic, and added salt or sugar. Do not assume a food is suitable for your dog just because it is safe for people; account for allergies and health needs.
What if your dog is not interested in toys?
Try an activity that does not require playing with a toy: scatter part of a regular meal for sniffing, or put kibble loosely in a towel for your dog to uncover. Make the first attempt easy and brief. Some dogs prefer food discovery to fetching or chewing, and it is fine to choose an activity your dog enjoys rather than insisting on a particular toy. If your dog avoids an activity, stop and try a simpler option another time.
