Teach a leg weave by rewarding one easy pass at a time: guide your dog through an opening between your legs, turn around one leg, repeat on the other side, then connect the movements into a figure eight. Once your dog follows the path reliably, fade the visible treat and hand motion, add a verbal cue, and build from a stationary weave to walking—or the reverse.
What a leg weave is—and which version to teach
A leg weave is a figure-eight pattern in which your dog passes between and around your legs. You can teach it while standing still or while walking. Both versions use the same idea—make a clear opening, guide the dog through, and reward the completed pass—but they differ in how the movement is introduced.

| Version | Handler movement | How it develops |
|---|---|---|
| Stationary | Stand with your legs apart. | Teach a turn around each leg, then link the sides into a figure eight before adding walking steps. |
| Moving | Take alternating, wide steps to create openings. | Teach the dog to pass through each opening, link the directions, then gradually increase the number and size of steps. |
The American Kennel Club (AKC) treats the stationary and moving versions as interchangeable progressions: you can reduce the steps in a moving weave to make it stationary, or add slow, short steps to a stationary weave to make it moving. AKC’s leg-weave instructions describe both approaches.

Set up for a comfortable, safe session
- Choose an open, safe area and remove your dog’s leash for the exercise so it cannot wrap around a leg, as the AKC advanced-trick guidance advises.
- Keep your steps wide enough to make an obvious opening, and move at your dog’s pace.
- Have small treats ready if you want to use food to guide and reward the movement. A clicker is optional: a consistent marker word such as “Yes” or praise can mark success too.
- If your dog is unsure about passing between your legs, begin with a simple pass through the opening rather than asking for the full weave. Gradually add the turn and the opposite side.
Teach the stationary leg weave
- Start with one pass. Face your dog, stand with your legs apart, and keep a treat hand low enough to guide the path. Lure your dog through the opening and around one leg until they return to the front. Mark the completed pass with a click, a marker word, or praise, then reward.
- Practice the other side. Guide your dog through and around the opposite leg, marking and rewarding a complete pass back to the front.
- Connect the two sides. Once your dog follows the lure on both sides, guide the first pass with an empty hand and deliver the reward from your other hand. When your dog can follow each side, link them into a full figure eight before marking and rewarding.
- Add a cue and fade the hand signal. When your dog follows the hand movement reliably, say your chosen verbal cue just before you begin. Gradually make the hand signal smaller so the dog responds to the cue rather than depending on a large guiding motion.
Teach the moving leg weave
- Create one clear opening. Start with your dog beside you. Take a wide step forward and guide your dog through the opening with a treat. Mark and reward only after your dog has passed completely through.
- Repeat with the other leg. Take a wide step with the opposite leg to create the next opening, then guide and reward another complete pass.
- Replace the visible treat. When your dog reliably follows the stepping motion, guide with an empty hand instead of holding a treat in view. Reward after the pass.
- Link the directions. Join the alternating passes into a figure eight. Add steps gradually rather than asking for a long sequence at once.
- Add the verbal cue and reduce your hand motion. Say the cue immediately before beginning the movement. As your dog learns it, make the hand signal smaller until your step is the main signal.
If your dog already heels on your left, the AKC notes that beginning with a right step can help prevent the dog from interpreting a left step as a heel cue.

Build from one version to the other
Once your dog understands the path, change only one part of the movement at a time. To move from stationary to walking, add slow, short steps between passes and increase your pace and stride gradually. To move from walking to stationary, take progressively smaller steps until you can guide the figure eight while standing in place.
If your dog loses the pattern when you change versions, return to the last movement they could follow comfortably—one pass, one side, or a shorter step—and reward that success before building again.

Mark and reward the movement, not just the treat
A treat can both guide your dog through the path and reward a completed pass. As your dog learns, switch from a visible food lure to an empty hand, then deliver the reward after the movement. Mark the moment your dog completes the pass or figure eight with a clicker, a consistent word, or praise; none of those marker options is mandatory equipment.

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home also describes the leg weave as a figure eight and notes that it can teach hind-end awareness; its tutorial uses alternating hand lures and a reward to guide the pattern. These are training rationales, not measured outcomes for every dog.
