You need only refined white granulated sugar and water to make safe hummingbird nectar at home. Mix them at a ratio of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water: use ¼ cup sugar with 1 cup water for a small batch.
Do not add red food coloring, honey, brown sugar, or artificial sweeteners. The feeder’s colored parts—and nearby flowers—attract hummingbirds; the nectar itself should be clear.

What you need
- ¼ cup refined white granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
This makes about 1¼ cups of nectar. You can scale the recipe up or down as long as you keep the same ratio:
| Water | White sugar |
|---|---|
| 1 cup | ¼ cup |
| 2 cups | ½ cup |
| 4 cups | 1 cup |
How to make hummingbird food
- Measure four parts water and one part refined white sugar.
- Stir the sugar into the water until no crystals remain.
- Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature if the water was warmed.
- Fill a clean hummingbird feeder.
The water does not have to be boiled if the sugar dissolves completely. Tap water is acceptable. Some guidance recommends briefly boiling the mixture to help dissolve the sugar and reduce contamination during preparation, but boiling does not make the nectar shelf-stable. It still needs refrigeration and regular replacement.

Which sugar is safe?
Use ordinary refined white table sugar. It provides the straightforward sugar-water mixture recommended for hummingbirds.
Do not use:
- Honey
- Brown sugar
- Raw or unprocessed sugar
- Organic sugar that contains molasses or other residual ingredients
- Corn syrup
- Powdered or confectioners’ sugar
- Artificial sweeteners
Honey can encourage fungal and bacterial growth. Powdered sugar commonly contains cornstarch or other additives, while unrefined sugars can contain minerals or compounds that are not appropriate for hummingbirds.
Never add red food coloring
Keep the nectar clear. Red dye is unnecessary and is not recommended by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, Audubon, or the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Hummingbirds can see the colored feeder parts and red flowers without dye in the food.

How to store leftover nectar
Put unused nectar in a clean, covered container and refrigerate it. Store it for no more than one week, and discard it immediately if you see mold.
Small batches are usually more practical. Refrigeration does not remove the need to change the nectar in the outdoor feeder on schedule.
When to change hummingbird food
Replace the nectar and thoroughly clean the feeder every other day as a cautious routine. Heat and direct sunlight make sugar water spoil faster. Cornell Lab guidance allows three to five days in cooler conditions, but recommends more frequent changes when temperatures rise above 90°F. Audubon recommends cleaning feeders every two to three days, or daily during particularly hot weather.

Empty and clean the feeder immediately if the nectar becomes:
- Cloudy
- Discolored
- Fermented-smelling
- Moldy
Spoiled sugar water can support harmful mold, fungus, and fermentation. Do not simply top off old nectar with a fresh batch.
How to clean the feeder
- Empty all remaining nectar.
- Take the feeder apart, including its reservoir, ports, seals, and other removable pieces.
- Scrub every chamber and crevice with hot water and a bottle brush.
- Rinse thoroughly before refilling.
Mold can grow inside narrow ports and seams where it is difficult to see unless the feeder is disassembled. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service advises avoiding soap or detergent because residue can remain behind. For periodic cleaning, Audubon recommends a diluted white-vinegar solution followed by thorough rinsing.

Common hummingbird-food mistakes
| Claim or mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| “The nectar must be boiled.” | Boil it only if you prefer that method; it is not required when the sugar dissolves completely. |
| “Red dye attracts hummingbirds.” | Leave the nectar clear and use a feeder with colored parts or place it near flowers. |
| “Honey is a healthier natural option.” | Use refined white sugar. Honey can promote dangerous fungal growth. |
| “Brown, raw, and organic sugar work the same way.” | Use refined white sugar unless the product is confirmed to contain no residual ingredients. |
| “A feeder should be removed so hummingbirds will migrate.” | Keep a clean feeder available for late migrants. Feeders do not prevent migration. |
Can hummingbirds live on feeder nectar alone?
No. Sugar water supplies energy, but hummingbirds also need natural food sources such as flower nectar and small insects. A feeder works best alongside a garden or outdoor space with suitable flowering plants and shelter.

What is the correct sugar-to-water ratio for hummingbird food?
Use 1 part refined white granulated sugar to 4 parts water. A small batch is ¼ cup sugar mixed with 1 cup water.
Does hummingbird nectar need to be boiled?
No. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo states that boiling is unnecessary if the sugar dissolves completely. If you boil the mixture, cool it fully before putting it in the feeder, and still refrigerate unused nectar.
Best Value
- No hydrogenated fats or high fructose corn syrup allowed in any food
- No bleached or bromated flour
- No synthetic nitrates or nitrites
Can I use tap water?
Yes. Tap water is acceptable for this recipe.
How long does homemade hummingbird nectar last?
Refrigerate unused nectar in a clean, covered container for no more than one week. In the feeder, replace it every other day as a cautious routine, and more often in hot weather.
Why should I not use red food coloring?
Red dye is unnecessary. Hummingbirds are attracted by the feeder’s colored parts and by red flowers, while the nectar should remain clear.
Can I make hummingbird food with honey or brown sugar?
No. Use refined white sugar. Honey can promote fungal and bacterial growth, and brown or unrefined sugars may contain unwanted minerals or residual ingredients.
What should I do if the nectar turns cloudy or develops mold?
Discard it immediately. Take the feeder apart, clean all chambers, ports, seals, and crevices with hot water, rinse thoroughly, and refill it with fresh nectar.
