Measure your dog while it is standing naturally, then record three dimensions: back length, chest girth and neck girth. Use those numbers—not a breed name, weight or the sweater’s small/medium/large label—to choose a size from the exact garment’s chart. Clothing sizes are not standardized between brands or even between styles, so the chart for the sweater you plan to buy is the final authority.
Which measurements do you need?
A sweater has to sit correctly in three directions. Its body must cover the dog’s back, its chest opening must pass around the widest part of the rib cage, and its neck opening must be comfortable where a collar normally rests. Measure all three before looking at sizes.

| Measurement | Where to measure | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Back length | Along the top of the spine, from where the neck joins the body (normally the collar line) to the base of the tail | How far the sweater extends along the back |
| Chest girth | Around the largest part of the rib cage, usually immediately behind the front legs | Room through the garment’s widest opening; the American Kennel Club identifies this as typically the most important clothing measurement |
| Neck girth | Around the base of the neck, where a collar sits | Whether the neck opening will sit comfortably without constricting |
Write each result down in the same unit used by the sweater chart, such as centimetres or inches. Do not rely on one measurement alone. A sweater can match the chest and still be too short along the back or too tight at the neck.

Use a flexible tape if you have one
A soft fabric measuring tape follows the dog’s curves and lets you read the number while it is wrapped around the body. Keep a note, phone or pencil ready so you can record each measurement immediately instead of trying to remember it.

Use string when you do not have a tape
String, ribbon or a shoelace works as a no-purchase alternative. Wrap it around the required area, mark or pinch the point where the ends meet, then lay the material flat against a ruler to read the length. Measure each body area separately; do not assume the same piece of string will stay aligned after it is removed.
Set up a calm measuring session
Have the dog stand on a level surface with its weight evenly distributed. A relaxed dog is easier to measure accurately. A helper can keep the dog steady while you handle the tape, and a small treat can help the dog remain in position. Avoid taking a measurement while the dog is sitting, crouching, twisting or leaning, because those postures change the body’s outline.
How to measure back length
- Place the dog in a natural standing position, with the head in a normal, relaxed posture.
- Find the point where the neck joins the body. This is generally the line where a collar sits, not the top of the dog’s head and not the end of the neck fur.
- Run the tape in a straight line along the top of the spine to the base of the tail, where the tail joins the body.
- Read the tape without bending it around the dog’s side. Record the result as the dog’s back length.
Back length is a measurement along the spine, not a diagonal from the neck to the tail. Starting too far forward makes the number artificially long; stopping on the tail rather than at its base does the same. When you compare sweaters later, use this number to check whether the garment will cover the back to the point you want.
How to measure chest girth
- Keep the dog standing evenly on all four feet.
- Find the widest part of the rib cage. In most dogs this is just behind the front legs.
- Wrap the tape all the way around the chest at that level, keeping it parallel to the floor rather than slanting toward the shoulders or belly.
- Pull the tape close enough to touch the coat, but do not compress the ribs or force the tape into the fur. Read and record the measurement.
Chest girth commonly determines whether a sweater can be put on and taken off comfortably, which is why the American Kennel Club describes it as typically the most important clothing measurement. It is still only one part of the fit: the back and neck must also match the garment’s chart.
How to measure neck girth
- Locate the base of the neck, at the same general position where a collar would rest.
- Wrap the tape around that base, keeping it level and in contact with the coat.
- Leave room rather than pulling the tape tight. Record the circumference shown on the tape.
Do not measure around the throat or under the jaw. Those locations are narrower and do not represent the opening a sweater will sit against. The base-of-neck measurement gives the chart a useful circumference for the garment’s collar area.

How to read a sweater’s size chart
Open the chart for the specific sweater, then compare your dog’s back length, chest girth and neck girth with every corresponding range. Brand and style labels are not standardized: a “medium” in one garment may have different dimensions from a “medium” in another. A size that fitted a previous coat is not automatically correct for a new sweater.
| Chart information | How to use it | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Back-length range | Check that your dog’s measured length falls inside the stated range and that the design provides the desired coverage. | That a matching chest size guarantees enough length. |
| Chest-girth range | Confirm that the measured circumference is within the chart’s chest range. | That the label alone describes the opening size. |
| Neck-girth range | Verify that the base-of-neck measurement fits the listed opening range. | That a loose-looking body compensates for a tight neck. |
| Weight band, if listed | Use weight only as an additional reference after checking the three body measurements. | That weight or breed is a universal sizing rule. |
Some apparel charts list separate bands for length, chest and weight. That format illustrates why a single weight or breed label cannot establish fit: two dogs with the same weight can have different proportions, and two garments with the same nominal size can have different dimensions.

What if your dog falls between sizes?
When a measurement sits between two chart ranges, the American Kennel Club’s general guidance is to choose the larger size, describing a slightly looser fit as more comfortable than a constricting one. Apply that advice together with the sweater’s own chart and construction. If the larger option greatly exceeds the listed back length or leaves openings that cannot sit securely, the garment may simply be the wrong design for your dog’s proportions.
Give priority to a chest opening that does not compress the rib cage, a neck opening that leaves room at the collar line, and back coverage that reaches the intended endpoint without bunching. A size label cannot resolve a mismatch between those three areas; the measurements and the garment’s dimensions do.
How to compare two sweaters for the same dog
If you are choosing between garments, place your dog’s measurements beside both charts. Compare the actual ranges rather than the names printed on the tags.

| Comparison | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Chest | Does the stated chest range include the dog’s measured girth without requiring a tight fit? |
| Back | Does the stated length cover the dog from the neck-to-body junction to the base of the tail, or provide the shorter coverage you deliberately want? |
| Neck | Does the neck range include the measured base-of-neck circumference with room at the collar line? |
| Overall design | Does the shape leave appropriate room around the chest and neck while providing suitable back coverage? |
When one sweater matches all three measurements and another matches only its chest label, the three-measurement match is the more defensible choice. Size names alone cannot establish which item fits.

Measuring while the dog is sitting
Symptom: The numbers change substantially when you repeat the process.
Correction: Wait for a natural standing posture with weight distributed evenly. Use a helper or treat to hold that position briefly, then repeat any measurement that was taken while the dog shifted.
Starting or ending back length at the wrong landmarks
Symptom: The sweater’s length looks wrong even though the number seemed plausible.
Correction: Start where the neck joins the body, around the collar line, and stop at the base of the tail. Keep the tape along the spine instead of following a diagonal or including the tail.

Placing the chest tape too far forward
Symptom: The chart says the chest should fit, but the garment is tight behind the legs.
Correction: Re-measure around the largest part of the rib cage, usually immediately behind the front legs. Keep the tape level and close, not tight.
Pulling the tape tight
Symptom: The sweater feels restrictive even though the measured number is inside the chart.
Correction: Repeat the measurement with the tape touching the coat without compressing the body. For the neck especially, leave room rather than cinching the tape.

Correction: Disregard the old label and consult the new garment’s chart. Brands and designs use different proportions, so re-measuring is faster than correcting an unsuitable purchase.
Relying on weight or breed alone
Symptom: The sweater fits one dog of a given breed or weight but not another.
Correction: Use the dog’s actual back, chest and neck dimensions. Treat a chart’s weight band as supplemental information only.
A simple record to keep for future purchases
Write the date and the three numbers together in one note:
- Back length: neck-to-body junction to tail base.
- Chest girth: widest rib-cage point, normally behind the front legs.
- Neck girth: base of neck at the collar line.
- Units: inches or centimetres, matching the chart.
- Chart used: the exact sweater and size table consulted.
Before ordering another garment, check whether the dog’s current measurements are still accurate rather than copying an old size. Then repeat the same comparison against the new sweater’s chart.
