You can arrange a future gift to the ASPCA by naming it as a beneficiary on an eligible retirement account, life-insurance policy, bank account, or investment account. You generally keep control and use of the asset during your lifetime; the gift takes effect under the account or policy’s beneficiary rules after your death. To do it, request the beneficiary-designation process from the institution that holds the asset, complete its form exactly as instructed, submit it, and then make sure the designation fits your will and wider estate plan.
What a beneficiary designation to the ASPCA does
A beneficiary designation is an instruction recorded with the company or institution that holds an asset. It identifies who should receive that asset, or a stated share of it, when the owner dies. Instead of transferring money to the ASPCA now, you name the organization to receive a future distribution.

The ASPCA describes this as a way to make a future gift while retaining control of the account during life. For bank and investment accounts, the arrangement may be called payable on death (POD) or transfer on death (TOD). Those designations are described as revocable, so the owner can generally change or remove them through the institution’s process while alive.

Which assets can name the ASPCA?
The ASPCA identifies several common routes. The exact form, terminology, and available options depend on the institution that administers the asset.
| Asset route | Institution to contact | Designation options described by the ASPCA | Lifetime access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retirement asset | Plan administrator, human-resources department, or retirement-account custodian | All or part of the account; the ASPCA may also be named as a contingent beneficiary | The account owner keeps control under the plan or account rules during life |
| Life-insurance policy | Insurer or policy administrator | A beneficiary designation for all or a stated portion, subject to the policy’s form and rules | The policy remains in force under its contract while the owner is alive |
| Bank account | Bank or credit-union account provider | Payable-on-death (POD) beneficiary arrangement | The owner retains use of the account while living; the ASPCA describes POD designations as revocable |
| Investment account | Brokerage or other financial institution holding the account | Transfer-on-death (TOD) beneficiary arrangement, where available | The owner retains control while living; the ASPCA describes TOD designations as revocable |
A designation can cover the entire asset, a percentage, or another division the institution permits. For example, you might name the ASPCA for 25% of a retirement account and name people or other organizations for the balance. The form, rather than a general template, determines which fractions, percentages, or dollar instructions are accepted.
How to name the ASPCA: a practical sequence
-
List the assets that offer beneficiary designations
Review retirement statements, insurance policies, bank accounts, and investment accounts. Note the institution, account or policy number, current beneficiaries, and whether a primary or contingent beneficiary is recorded. Do not assume that every account uses the same designation; each custodian may maintain a separate record.

Ask the holder for its current process
Contact the plan administrator, human-resources department, financial institution, bank, brokerage, or insurer that holds the asset. Ask specifically for the beneficiary-designation form or online workflow and whether the institution requires an organizational beneficiary’s legal name, address, tax identification number, or supporting documentation. Procedures can differ, so use the instructions supplied by that institution.
-
Use the ASPCA’s identifying information exactly as requested

Enter only the fields the institution requests, and verify whether it wants an address for notices or a different format for organizational beneficiaries.
-
Choose primary, partial, or contingent status
A primary beneficiary is first in line under the account’s rules. A partial designation gives the ASPCA only the stated share. A contingent beneficiary receives the asset or share if the primary beneficiary cannot receive it under the plan or policy terms. The ASPCA specifically describes contingent designations for retirement assets. Confirm how your institution defines these categories before selecting one.

Complete and submit the form
Follow every signature, witnessing, electronic-confirmation, and percentage instruction. If the form requires percentages, make sure the primary beneficiaries total 100% and that contingent shares are completed in the way the custodian requests. Submit through the approved channel and save a copy of what you sent.
-
Confirm that the record was accepted
Look for written or electronic confirmation from the institution. A draft form, an unsaved online change, or a document sent to the wrong department does not reliably establish a designation. Check the account’s beneficiary display or request confirmation that the ASPCA’s legal name and share were entered correctly.
-
Record the decision with your estate documents
Keep the confirmation with your estate-planning records and note the institution’s contact information. Tell the person who will coordinate your estate where the record is stored. Review the designation after major life events, account rollovers, policy changes, marriage or divorce, deaths of beneficiaries, or changes to your charitable plans.

How the designation fits with a will and estate plan
The ASPCA says naming a beneficiary does not require changing a will. That means a person can often complete the institution’s designation process without rewriting the will solely for that purpose. It does not mean the designation should be considered in isolation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Beneficiary instructions are maintained by the account or policy holder, so your estate plan should identify which assets pass by designation and which pass under the will or another document. A mismatch can produce an outcome you did not intend—for example, a will may describe a gift differently from the current account record. Ask an estate-planning attorney to review the arrangement if your plan includes trusts, a blended family, special-needs planning, business interests, debts, or several beneficiaries.
Keep beneficiary records current rather than relying on an old statement. A rollover can create a new account with a new designation, and an insurer or custodian may require a fresh form after ownership or policy changes. The institution’s current record controls its processing, so confirmation matters.
Deciding how much to leave
All of an asset
Naming the ASPCA for 100% of an eligible asset is the simplest percentage instruction, but it may not fit your family-support or liquidity needs. Consider whether people who depend on the asset need to be primary beneficiaries and whether the ASPCA should instead be contingent.
A stated share
A percentage lets you divide one account among the ASPCA and other beneficiaries. Use the institution’s permitted format and check the arithmetic. If the account value changes, a percentage changes with it; a fixed-dollar instruction, if offered, may operate differently.

Contingent status
Making the ASPCA contingent can preserve a primary gift for a person while establishing a charitable destination if that person cannot take the asset. Because plan language varies, ask the administrator what event activates the contingent designation and how multiple contingent beneficiaries are handled.
What “no cost now” does—and does not—mean
- No present transfer: The ASPCA does not receive the account balance merely because it is listed as beneficiary.
- Continued use: The ASPCA says the owner retains control of the asset during life; POD and TOD arrangements are described as revocable.
- Possible institution charges: A custodian may have its own paperwork or service fees. Ask before making the change rather than assuming every provider’s process is free.
- Future consequences: Distribution timing, income-tax treatment, estate-tax exposure, creditor rules, and probate treatment depend on the asset, jurisdiction, beneficiary status, and current law. A beneficiary form is not a guarantee that every cost disappears.
- No automatic income-tax deduction: Merely naming a future beneficiary is not described here as a current charitable deduction for the donor.
Tax and legal questions to take to an adviser
The ASPCA’s current planned-giving information says retirement assets may have tax advantages when left to charity, but it directs readers to obtain specific advice from their own tax adviser, attorney, or financial planner. Tax law and state rules can change, and the result may differ for a retirement account, insurance policy, bank account, or investment account.
Ask an adviser to evaluate the particular asset and your circumstances, including:
- Whether the account has required distribution or beneficiary rules that affect timing.
- How a charitable beneficiary interacts with other primary and contingent beneficiaries.
- Whether a trust, community-property regime, divorce order, or other legal document affects the designation.
- How any expected tax filing, valuation, or reporting requirement would be handled.
- Whether the designation coordinates with your state’s estate and probate rules.
The ASPCA states: “The material presented on this website is intended as general educational information on the topics discussed herein and should not be interpreted as legal, financial or tax advice.” Treat that statement as a boundary: the organization explains the charitable option, but it cannot determine the correct designation for your individual plan.

Failing to distinguish primary from contingent
A charity listed in the wrong field may receive nothing under the circumstances you intended. Read the institution’s definitions and ask for clarification before submitting.
Assuming one form updates every account
Beneficiary records are held by individual plan administrators, insurers, banks, and investment firms. Complete a separate process for each asset unless the institution explicitly says otherwise.
Leaving percentages incomplete
Forms that require percentage allocations may be rejected if the total is not completed as instructed. Check both primary and contingent sections.
Not checking acceptance
Keep the confirmation, not just a copy of your request. If the institution cannot verify the designation, ask what must be corrected and resubmit through its approved channel.
Ignoring later changes
Review designations after a rollover, account replacement, marriage, divorce, death of a beneficiary, or major change in your estate plan. A new account or policy may not inherit the old account’s beneficiary record.
A quick decision checklist
- Have you identified every retirement, insurance, bank, and investment asset that permits a beneficiary designation?
- Have you contacted each holder for its current form or online procedure?
- Have you entered “The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals” and the identifying information the institution requests?
- Have you decided whether the ASPCA should be primary, partial, or contingent for each asset?
- Do all required shares or percentages follow that institution’s rules?
- Did you receive and save confirmation that the change was accepted?
- Does the designation match your will, trusts, family-support goals, and other estate documents?
- Have you asked a qualified attorney, tax adviser, or financial planner about issues specific to your circumstances?
What to do next
Start with one account and ask its administrator for the beneficiary-designation instructions. Decide the ASPCA’s role only after reviewing the account’s existing beneficiaries and your broader plan. Submit the completed designation, verify acceptance, and store the confirmation where your estate coordinator can find it. Repeat the process for any other eligible asset, then schedule a review whenever your family, accounts, policies, or estate documents change.
