Photograph wildlife from a distance, using a telephoto or zoom lens, and back away as soon as an animal responds to your presence. There is no safe universal distance: park rules and species-specific requirements differ, so check the current rules where you are before taking pictures.

How do you photograph wildlife without disturbing it?

Let the animal’s welfare determine where you stand and when you stop. Choose a position that does not require approaching, pursuing, or changing the animal’s behavior. Yellowstone National Park advises: “Never approach or pursue an animal to take its picture: use binoculars or telephoto lenses to get a better view.”

Watch the animal, not just your viewfinder. If it moves away, pauses what it was doing, changes direction, or otherwise changes its behavior after noticing you, increase your distance or leave. Yellowstone’s rule of thumb is: “If you cause an animal to move, you’re too close.” Texas Parks and Wildlife Department gives similar guidance: “When an animal changes behavior as a result of our presence, we are too close.”

A lack of an obvious reaction does not prove that an animal is unaffected. Keep a generous distance from the outset, stay quiet, avoid sudden movements, and give the animal room to leave. If you cannot get the picture without closing in, accept the wider frame or put the camera away.

How close can you get to wildlife for a photo?

Follow the rules for the exact park, species, and activity. Published distances from one place are not universal standards, and a park may set a stricter minimum than general guidance. Check current official rules before approaching a viewing area or setting up a camera.

Authority or location Published distance How to interpret it
National Park Service general guidance 25 yards for many wildlife species; 100 yards for predators such as bears and wolves Examples only; the NPS says park rules vary.
Olympic National Park 50 yards An NPS example of a park with a different minimum.
San Juan Island National Historical Park 75 feet (23 metres) from wildlife A site-specific NPS minimum.
Alberta 30 metres for most wildlife; 100 metres for bears and large carnivores Regional government guidance for Alberta, not a rule for other jurisdictions.

These figures come from the respective authorities’ wildlife guidance: National Park Service general guidance, San Juan Island National Historical Park, and Government of Alberta. The NPS also identifies Olympic National Park’s 50-yard minimum as an example on its general guidance page. Regulations and closures can change, so confirm the current requirements with the park or wildlife authority rather than relying on an old sign, article, or another location’s distances.

What lens do you need to photograph wildlife from far away?

A telephoto or zoom lens lets you fill more of the frame while staying farther from the animal. Yellowstone and Texas Parks and Wildlife recommend telephoto lenses for wildlife viewing and photography. Choose equipment compatible with your camera, but do not treat extra reach as permission to approach beyond a local limit.

Binoculars or a spotting scope are useful when your goal is observation rather than a photograph. Keep the applicable distance even when using optics, and move back if an animal approaches you. A blind or vehicle may provide a way to observe from a distance where local rules allow it; do not leave an authorized area to improve the angle.

What actions can stress or endanger wildlife?

Do not try to make an animal perform for the camera. Avoid approaching, following, chasing, herding, flushing, baiting, feeding, teasing, calling, or deliberately frightening wildlife. Do not make noise to provoke a reaction, enter a restricted area, or push through vegetation to get a clearer composition.

  • Stay on designated trails and in authorized viewing areas; move quietly and keep voices low.
  • Leave nests and dens alone. Take extra care around young: repeated visits, camera noises, flashes, or nearby hides can disturb adults and may expose young to missed care or predation.
  • Share viewing space and do not block other visitors or crowd an animal.
  • Never put yourself, other people, or an animal at risk near roads or other hazards for a photograph.

The National Park Service warns that animals may be stressed or injured when they flee, particularly near roads, and says intentional disturbance is illegal under the regulation it cites. Laws and permitted activities vary by place, so follow the local authority’s rules as well as these welfare precautions. Western Australia’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions says photographers must not photograph wildlife if doing so may expose it to threats, stress, physical harm, predation, or impaired reproduction.

Should you geotag a wildlife photo?

Think before publishing a precise location. A geotag or caption that reveals a sensitive den, nest, or breeding area can draw additional visitors and increase disturbance. Alberta cautions against sharing location information where it could contribute to crowding and disturbance, particularly during breeding and nesting periods. Consider removing precise location metadata or keeping the location general when disclosure could put wildlife at risk.

What should you disclose when sharing a wildlife photograph?

Describe the image honestly. Do not present a captive or controlled scene as a spontaneous encounter in the wild, and disclose relevant methods or conditions when a publication asks for them.

For contributors, the National Wildlife Federation’s National Wildlife magazine requires disclosure of whether an animal was captive or in controlled conditions, whether bait was used, whether special equipment such as a camera trap or drone was used, and whether an image was altered. Those are that publication’s submission rules, not a universal legal standard. The magazine says it will not accept predator or raptor images obtained by baiting with live or dead mice, or images with significant features added or removed. More broadly, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reproduces the International League of Conservation Photographers’ principle that wildlife welfare comes first and negative physical, emotional, and behavioral effects should be minimized.
