Choose a cat perch by checking four things first: whether it fits the intended location and mounting surface, whether its usable surface lets your cat stretch out, whether your cat can get up and down comfortably, and whether the exact product is rated and installed for your cat’s weight. Then consider stability, household traffic, inspection and cleaning.
Start with the cat, not the product
A perch should be large enough for your cat to rest and stretch. The AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines say perches should be “wide enough and long enough to allow the cat to fully stretch.” A hammock-style dip may also give a cat a more concealed resting spot. - Measure the usable surface: account for the space your cat occupies when curled up and stretched out, not just the product’s outer dimensions.
- Think about access: a high perch is not a good choice if your cat struggles to reach it or descend safely.
- Consider the cat’s preferences: a window view, a more sheltered spot or a route away from household traffic may matter more than height alone.

Which type of perch suits the location?

Check the exact product’s capacity and mounting
Capacity statements apply to the product and mounting method named by its manufacturer; they are not general limits for all perches. Do not treat a product’s maximum as a target load or transfer one model’s rating to another. The cited documents give these examples:

For a wall-mounted perch, use fasteners suited to the actual wall and follow the product’s installation instructions. The Nest Perch instructions recommend mounting to studs or using heavy-duty anchors appropriate for the wall; its stated capacity depends on proper mounting. A rating cannot compensate for an unsuitable wall, incorrect fasteners or poor installation.

Make installation and upkeep part of the decision
- Confirm compatibility: check the exact window, wall or other mounting surface against the product’s instructions before buying or installing.
- Install as directed: use only the specified attachment method and appropriate fasteners. For suction-mounted products, follow the maker’s surface-preparation steps; the Gorilla Grip guide says to clean the window before attachment.
- Plan the route: keep the way up, the perch and the landing area clear. Add a step pattern or ramp if the cat needs easier access.
- Inspect attachment points: check the product and fasteners periodically, particularly after movement or a change in attachment. The Gorilla Grip guide warns that suction cups wear and weaken over time and says to check them frequently; replace cups that are worn, cracked or losing suction. It also advises ensuring the window itself is secure and stable.
- Keep nearby hazards out of reach: check for open windows, cords, hot appliances and breakable objects around the perch and landing area.
Plan for more than one cat
The AAFP and ISFM guidelines recommend at least as many safe places sized for one cat as there are cats in the home, with safe places separated from one another. Where one cat could block another’s access, the guidelines recommend more than one entry. Use a quick fit check before you commit
- Does the perch fit the room and the specific mounting surface?
- Can your cat lie down and stretch on the usable surface?
- Can your cat reach it and get down safely, with a ramp or steps if needed?
