In a multicat home, sharing resources works best when it does not require cats to share the same station. Set up multiple, separated places to eat, drink, toilet, rest, hide, scratch, play, and climb so each cat can reach what it needs without being watched, blocked, or crowded.

What cats need access to around the home

Plan for each cat and for each distinct social group in the household. Cats that live under one roof do not necessarily behave as one group; some are comfortable together, while others prefer distance. Arrange resources so no cat has to pass or confront another to reach them.

  • Food and water in separate, accessible locations
  • Litter boxes in more than one location
  • Safe resting and sleeping places, including hiding options
  • Scratching surfaces and opportunities for play
  • Elevated perches or other usable vertical space

Keep unlike resource types apart where practical. For example, do not place food and water beside litter boxes. Spread stations through the home rather than clustering them together, and use different levels if the layout allows.

Are my cats sharing, or taking turns?

Seeing cats eat or sleep near one another does not by itself show that they are socially comfortable or prefer sharing. A single station can lead cats to take turns, wait for one another to leave, or avoid the resource when another cat is nearby. The AAFP and ISFM environmental-needs guidelines explain that distributing resources gives cats more opportunity to avoid one another and can reduce competition (2013 AAFP/ISFM guidelines).

Observe patterns over time: who approaches a station, whether another cat stares at or blocks the route, and whether one cat waits until the other leaves. Social tension may show up as subtle changes rather than fights, and can go unnoticed, according to the 2024 AAFP intercat-tension guidelines.

How to place food, water, and other shared resources

Food and water

Offer each cat a separate feeding station, with enough space and privacy that cats are not forced to eat close together. Provide multiple drinking options as well. Place water away from food and litter where practical, so cats have choices in different parts of the home.

Resting places, hiding spots, and perches

Give cats several safe places to settle, including enclosed or tucked-away hiding options and elevated spots. The 2013 AAFP/ISFM environmental-needs guidelines recommend at least as many safe places, each sized for one cat, as there are cats in the household. A perch or cat tree can help use vertical space, but it should not become the only route to an essential resource.

Scratching and play

Put scratching surfaces in more than one location and make play available in ways that suit the household. Some cats may play comfortably together; others may do better with separate play opportunities or play with their own social group.

How many litter boxes do I need for multiple cats?

The familiar rule of thumb is one litter box per cat, plus one extra. The 2024 AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guidance says this is not an absolute requirement: provide sufficient boxes in separate locations, taking the cats’ social relationships and the home’s layout into account (AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guidance).

  • Place boxes in separate locations; boxes side by side may function like one station from a cat’s perspective.
  • In a multilevel home, provide at least one box on each level.
  • Consider separate social groups and cats that do not affiliate with one another when deciding where boxes belong.
  • Keep litter boxes away from food and water.

If a cat begins toileting outside the box, review the number, placement, and accessibility of boxes rather than assuming the cat is misbehaving. House-soiling can have medical or environmental causes; a veterinarian can help assess new or persistent changes.

How to tell whether a cat is being blocked or pressured

Look at access as well as overt conflict. A cat may be having trouble using a resource if another cat repeatedly watches, guards the approach, or occupies a narrow route. Waiting until a housemate leaves, withdrawing from usual activities, hiding more, or a change in eating, drinking, or toileting are reasons to look closely at the setup.

One behavior alone does not establish a diagnosis. New house-soiling, reduced eating or drinking, or a marked or persistent behavior change warrants careful assessment and veterinary input. The AAFP/ISFM house-soiling guidance also recommends evaluating the litter arrangement and optimizing the environment.

How do I introduce a new cat into a home with other cats?

Prepare the environment before the newcomer arrives, then build familiarity gradually. The 2024 AAFP guideline recommends a secure transition room with the new cat’s own food, water, litter, perches, hiding options, soft bed, scratching surfaces, and toys. Add resources around the rest of the home as well, so resident cats are not made to compete for access.

  1. Set up the transition room with its own complete set of resources.
  2. Make sure resident cats also have accessible resources in their usual areas.
  3. Allow the cats to become familiar gradually, following a staged introduction rather than putting them together immediately.
  4. If following the guideline’s pheromone suggestion, plug in a feline synthetic pheromone diffuser 24–48 hours before the introduction. This is one preparation step, not a substitute for gradual integration or adequate resources.

The guideline describes preparation and gradual familiarity; it does not guarantee that a particular introduction method or product will resolve tension.

Choose arrangements that fit your cats and home

When deciding where to add or move a resource, use these checks:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Access: Can each cat reach it without passing or confronting another?
  • Distribution: Are resources spread across separate locations or levels instead of clustered?
  • Privacy: Can a cat eat, toilet, hide, or rest without being watched or trapped?
  • Fit: Does the item suit the cat’s size, age, mobility, and habits?
  • Choice: Where practical, does each cat have more than one safe option?

The right arrangement depends on the cats’ relationships and the space available. Resource categories and placement matter more than buying a particular product.
