The best choice is an alert, upright dragon with clear eyes, a clean mouth and vent, and a documented history of proper diet, UVB, heat and veterinary care. Those signs help you screen an animal, but they do not replace an examination by a reptile veterinarian. Before you collect the dragon, have a correctly measured enclosure ready and arrange a post-purchase health and parasite check.
What a healthy bearded dragon looks like
Visit the breeder or store when you can watch the animals for several minutes rather than choosing from a photograph. A healthy-looking dragon should respond to movement and its surroundings. It should hold its chest and head upright, move with normal coordination and show enough strength to climb or reposition itself. Alertness is more useful than a single moment of activity: a dragon that briefly opens its eyes when disturbed but remains weak, collapsed or unresponsive needs further investigation.

Face, eyes and breathing
- Eyes should be clear and open without crust, swelling or discharge.
- The mouth should be clean, with no mucus, sores, swelling or foul odor.
- Nostrils should be free of discharge. Watch for open-mouth breathing when the dragon is not basking, clicking sounds or obvious effort to breathe.
- The vent should be clean and free of persistent wetness, redness or fecal material.
Body, posture and movement
- Look for a firm body, normal muscle tone and coordinated walking. Avoid an animal that cannot lift its body, drags a limb or repeatedly trembles.
- Check for wounds, burns, retained shed constricting toes or tail tissue, swollen joints and areas of missing skin.
- Ask to see the dragon eat if possible, but do not reject a healthy animal solely because it does not eat during a short visit; transport, handling and time of day can suppress appetite.
These are screening observations, not a diagnosis. VCA recommends asking the seller about a health guarantee, and a guarantee should state its duration, covered conditions and the procedure for returning or treating an animal.
Questions to ask before you buy
A seller who keeps records should be able to answer specific questions rather than offering only a general assurance that the dragon is “healthy.” Write down the answers so you can give the same information to your veterinarian.

Age, growth and origin
- What is the hatch date or best estimate of age?
- What is the current weight and how has it changed over recent weeks?
- What adult size is expected for this animal and what size were its parents, if known?
- Was it captive-bred, and how long has it been at this location?
Diet and elimination
- Which insects, greens and vegetables are offered, and how often?
- Are feeder insects gut-loaded before feeding? What calcium and vitamin products are used, and on what schedule?
- When did it last eat and defecate? Is its usual stool formed, and has it ever had diarrhea, constipation or a change in color or odor?
Lighting and enclosure
- What UVB bulb type and strength are installed, how far is the dragon from the bulb, and when was the bulb fitted?
- What basking and cool-side temperatures are recorded, and with which instruments?
- What substrate, hides, branches and cleaning products are used?
Medical history and policies
- Has a reptile or exotic veterinarian examined the dragon? Request dates, diagnoses and treatment records.
- Has a fecal test been performed for parasites? Ask for the result and any medication, dose and completion date.
- What written health guarantee and return policy apply, and who pays veterinary costs if a problem is found?
Incorrect diet, lighting, temperature and enclosure design are common contributors to illness, so the seller’s routine matters as much as the dragon’s appearance. A clean, well-measured setup and consistent records are positive signs; vague answers or refusal to show the enclosure are reasons to postpone the purchase.
Compare two dragons or sellers systematically
When several animals look similar, score the same factors for each instead of choosing by color or size alone.
| Comparison point | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Alertness and posture | Upright head and chest, responsive movement, coordinated walking | Shows current vigor; weakness can indicate illness, injury or poor husbandry |
| Cleanliness | Clear eyes, clean mouth and vent, no nasal discharge or visible wounds | Reduces concern about active infection or inadequate care |
| Feeding and growth | Recent meals, prey and produce offered, weight trend and stool pattern | Reveals whether the routine supports growth and digestion |
| Husbandry at the seller | UVB type and age, measured temperatures, substrate, humidity and hygiene | Bad conditions can create problems that are not obvious during a brief visit |
| Records and guarantee | Veterinary and parasite records, written guarantee and return terms | Gives you evidence and a plan if illness appears after purchase |
| Age and future needs | Age, expected adult size and the enclosure and food changes that will follow | Lets you plan space, equipment and ongoing supply costs |
Do not treat a lower price, unusual color or larger body as proof of better health. Choose the animal and seller with the clearest evidence of sound care.

Book a reptile or exotic-animal veterinarian soon after bringing the dragon home, even when it appears normal. The visit establishes a baseline and can detect problems hidden by stress or an early stage of disease. Ask the clinic about a fecal examination and bring the seller’s diet, medication, weight and enclosure notes. Spartan Animal Hospital points owners to the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV) and the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) directories when searching for a qualified veterinarian.

Keep the new dragon separate from other reptiles until the veterinarian has assessed it and you understand the parasite results. Wash your hands after handling the dragon, its food or anything in the enclosure. Reptiles can carry Salmonella without appearing sick; do not prepare human food, clean equipment or let young children handle the animal near eating areas.
Prepare a health-supportive enclosure
Set up and test the enclosure before pickup. Measure conditions at the dragon’s actual basking surface and resting locations; room readings or a hand test cannot tell you whether the animal is receiving the right heat or UVB.
UVB lighting
UVB is required for bearded dragons. UC Davis describes using a fluorescent bulb labeled at least 5% UVB, positioned within the distance recommended by that bulb’s manufacturer and operated on a timer. A fixture, reflector and unobstructed path to the dragon are part of the system. UVB output declines even while the tube still produces visible light, so replace it on the manufacturer’s schedule rather than waiting for it to burn out. Mesh, glass and plastic can reduce or block UVB, so confirm what lies between the bulb and the basking site.

| Location | Starting temperature | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Cool side | About 76°F (24°C) | Allows the dragon to move away from heat |
| Warm side | About 86°F (30°C) | Provides an intermediate zone |
| Basking surface | 90–100°F (32–37.7°C) | Measure the surface where the dragon actually sits |
These are starting values, not universal settings. Enclosure size, ventilation, fixture type and room temperature change the result. Use a reliable digital thermometer at both ends and a humidity gauge; adjust equipment until the measured gradient is stable. Never rely on touch, a single thermometer or the temperature printed on a heater package.
Substrate, furniture and cleaning
UC Davis advises against sand, wood chips and gravel because a dragon can swallow them. Use a cleanable, non-loose substrate appropriate for the enclosure, and remove soiled material promptly. Provide a stable basking structure, climbing branches and at least one hide. Furniture should not wobble, have sharp edges or allow a fall from a dangerous height. Clean food and water containers regularly and follow a consistent enclosure-disinfection routine.
Humidity
PetMD gives a target humidity range of 30–50%. Measure it with a gauge rather than estimating from the room. Excess moisture combined with poor ventilation can contribute to respiratory problems, while an unsuitable dry environment can complicate shedding and general care. Correct the enclosure’s ventilation and water practices instead of trying to fix readings with a constant misting routine.

Bearded dragons are omnivores, and their balance of animal and plant foods changes with age. WSU describes an adult pattern of about 25% insects, 50–55% dark leafy greens, 20% chopped vegetables and less than 5% fruit. Juveniles need primarily insects to support growth, with plant foods introduced as part of an age-appropriate plan from your veterinarian.

Insects and prey size
Offer appropriately sized prey and gut-load feeder insects with nutritious food before feeding them to the dragon. UC Davis warns that prey that is too large can cause impaction, neurologic problems and death. When in doubt, use smaller prey and ask the veterinarian to confirm a suitable size for the dragon’s age and head dimensions. Remove uneaten live insects so they cannot injure or continually stress the dragon.
Greens, vegetables and fruit
Use a variety of suitable dark leafy greens and finely chopped vegetables rather than relying on one item. Fruit should remain a very small part of an adult diet. Wash produce, remove spoiled food and adjust portions when weight or stool quality changes. A written feeding log helps you identify whether an appetite change is isolated or part of a trend.
Calcium and vitamins
Calcium and vitamin supplementation must match the dragon’s age, diet and UVB setup. PetMD lists calcium products with and without vitamin D among standard supplies. Do not add supplements at random or assume more is safer; ask the veterinarian to review the exact product, dose and frequency alongside the measured UVB arrangement.
Warning signs after you bring the dragon home
Stress can briefly change eating and activity after transport, but persistent or worsening signs need professional advice.

| Sign | Response |
|---|---|
| Lethargy, weakness or inability to hold the body up | Contact an exotic veterinarian promptly |
| No food for more than one to two days in an adult | Call the veterinarian for guidance; do not force-feed without instruction |
| No defecation, repeated straining or a swollen abdomen | Arrange veterinary advice, especially if appetite or activity also falls |
| Watery, foul-smelling or discolored stools | Save a fresh sample if possible and request a fecal examination |
| Breathing difficulty, clicking, open-mouth breathing when not basking or discharge | Seek prompt veterinary attention |
| Eye, mouth or vent discharge; new swelling or wounds | Isolate from other reptiles and arrange an examination |
Never give human medicines, leftover antibiotics or unprescribed dewormers. Temperature, hydration, parasites, diet and other causes can produce similar symptoms, so treatment depends on an examination and appropriate testing.
Understand the long-term commitment
With proper care, PetMD gives bearded dragons a lifespan of eight to 10 years, while the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine gives seven to 10 years. The difference reflects normal variation among sources, not a promise for an individual animal. Plan for years of UVB tubes and fixtures, heat equipment, substrate and cleaning supplies, feeder insects, produce, supplements and veterinary care. Equipment will need replacement before the dragon does, and a larger enclosure or altered furniture may be needed as it grows.
Purchase-day checklist
- Watch the dragon’s posture, movement and responsiveness for several minutes.
- Inspect eyes, mouth, nostrils, vent, skin, toes and tail for cleanliness or injury.
- Ask for age, weight trend, diet, feeding and stool history.
- Record the seller’s UVB bulb, fixture, distance, replacement date, temperatures, humidity and substrate.
- Request veterinary and parasite records, a written guarantee and return terms.
- Confirm the dragon’s expected adult size and the equipment changes you will need.
- Transport it directly to a tested enclosure; avoid unnecessary handling on the first day.
- Schedule an exotic-veterinarian examination and parasite check soon after arrival.
The safest purchase is not simply the most active dragon in the shop. It is the animal whose condition, care history and seller documentation make sense together, followed by a measured enclosure and prompt veterinary baseline examination.
