To pick up a cat, first make sure it is relaxed and willing to stay near you. Place one hand beneath its chest just behind the front legs and the other beneath its hindquarters, then lift smoothly and hold it close with both ends supported. If the cat moves away, tenses, or struggles, stop and give it space; cats do not need to be held to bond with people.
Before you pick up a cat, look for willingness
Get down to the cat’s level, approach slowly, and speak quietly. Leave it a clear way to move away. Do not surprise a cat that is sleeping or hiding, and do not corner it. If it retreats, let it go rather than following or reaching after it.

Stand or kneel beside the cat rather than looming over it. Move calmly and keep your movements smooth.

Slide one hand beneath the chest, just behind the front legs.

Place your other hand beneath the hindquarters, behind the back legs, so the cat’s weight is supported at both ends.

Lift gently, bringing the cat close to your body as you rise. Keep its rear supported in the crook of an arm and its chest and front legs supported with the other arm.

Stay as still as you can while holding the cat. If you need to walk, move slowly and keep supporting the hindquarters so the back legs do not dangle.

To put the cat down, lower it until all four paws can reach the floor, then release it gently.
This two-point support method is also reflected in Cats Protection’s handling guide and the ASPCA’s general cat-care guidance.

When to stop holding a cat
Set the cat down slowly if it wriggles, tenses, tries to bite, hisses, growls, or attempts to get away. Do not tighten your grip to keep it in place. Cats Protection notes that many cats may be comfortable being held for only a minute or two; this is general guidance, not a time limit that applies to every cat.

Discomfort can also be subtle. Dilated pupils, ears turned sideways or back, nose licking, a quickly twitching tail tip, abruptly grooming one body part, or looking away may be signs the cat wants space. Read the cat’s overall behavior rather than treating one cue as a diagnosis. Cats Protection discusses these signals in its guidance on cats and children.
Special care for kittens and nervous cats
Kittens
Use the same support for a kitten as for an adult cat: one hand under the chest and one under the hindquarters. Their small size does not make it safe to lift them by the front legs or leave their back legs unsupported.

Nervous cats
Avoid picking up a particularly nervous cat unless you need to. Restraining it can add stress and is not a good way to teach it to accept handling. For routine trips, gradually helping the cat feel comfortable with a carrier is preferable.
Sick or injured cats
A cat that is sick or injured may resent being handled, and unnecessary restraint can add stress. Contact a veterinarian for advice on moving it rather than treating an ordinary pickup as a restraint technique.
Use a carrier when the goal is transport
A carrier is for safe transport, not a prerequisite for everyday holding. For veterinary trips, Cats Protection’s carrier-training guidance recommends choosing a sturdy plastic or metal-wire carrier that is secure, lightweight, easy to clean, ventilated, and large enough for the cat to stand, lie down, and reposition. A top opening or removable top can make placement and training easier. No single brand or model is established as best by these criteria.

Gradual, positive carrier training and treats can help make the carrier more familiar. A familiar towel or blanket can line or cover it; for an especially nervous cat, a towel-over-the-cat transfer directly into the carrier is described by Cats Protection as a short-term or emergency method, not a routine way to pick up a cat. International Cat Care also advises supporting the carrier from underneath when carrying it so it stays level and moves less. See its veterinary-clinic transport guidance.

Do not hold a cat that is trying to leave, or continue when it shows stress.
