For a reliable catnip crop, grow true catnip (Nepeta cataria) in sun and well-drained soil, then protect young plants from cats and contain the plant as it spreads. You can start it from seed, stem-tip cuttings, or division. Harvest timing depends on your goal: Illinois Extension identifies full bloom as the peak for flavor and aroma, while an Arizona home-gardening guide recommends cutting before flowers open.
The steps below separate those choices so you can raise healthy plants and dry a useful harvest without treating one climate or purpose as universal.

1. Buy true catnip, not just any catmint
Check the botanical name on the seed packet or plant label: true catnip is Nepeta cataria, a perennial member of the mint family. The genus Nepeta also includes ornamental catmints. Those plants can look different and may be less attractive to cats, so the common name alone is not a dependable identification.
Use “catnip seeds” or “Nepeta cataria seeds” as your search terms, and verify the species before planting. The extension guidance used here concerns true catnip rather than the broader group of ornamental catmints.

2. Choose a sunny site with drainage
Full sun and moist but well-drained soil are the safest starting conditions. Catnip tolerates light or partial shade, and Wisconsin Extension notes that it can thrive in poor soils, but waterlogged ground is a poor choice. Select a spot where excess water can drain after rain.
- Give the plant the brightest practical location for sturdier stems and more compact growth.
- Improve a site that stays wet by using a raised bed or a container with drainage holes.
- Do not assume poor soil requires heavy fertilizing; the plant is described as able to grow in lean ground.
3. Plan for spread before you plant
Catnip can spread quickly. Decide in advance whether you want a contained clump or are willing to remove volunteer seedlings. A large container, edging, or a bed where seedlings can be pulled without disturbing other plants makes management easier.
Containment is especially useful in a small garden. Place the plant where its spread will not crowd slower-growing herbs, and inspect nearby soil for seedlings as the season progresses. Removing unwanted seedlings while they are small is simpler than clearing an established patch.
4. Start catnip from seed using a light covering
Seed is the practical route when you do not already have a plant. The Arizona Extension home guide describes sowing on prepared soil and covering the very small seeds with about 1/8 inch of soil. Treat that depth as the method in that guide, not as a universal calendar or germination guarantee.
- Prepare a fine, weed-free surface in a bed or seed-starting flat.
- Scatter the small seeds and cover them with approximately 1/8 inch of soil.
- Keep the medium from drying while seedlings are getting established, without leaving it saturated.
- If you start in a flat, transplant according to the Arizona guide after seedlings have five sets of leaves.
Label the tray with the species name. A label prevents ornamental Nepeta varieties from being mistaken for true catnip later.

5. Use cuttings or division when a plant is already available
Illinois Extension lists stem-tip cuttings and division alongside seed, and Wisconsin Extension also describes dividing established plants. These methods require access to a healthy catnip plant but avoid starting a new planting from tiny seed.
| Method | What you need | Best fit | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seed | True catnip seed and prepared soil or a flat | Starting a new planting | The Arizona guide describes sowing under about 1/8 inch of soil and transplanting from a flat after five sets of leaves. |
| Stem-tip cutting | Access to a live plant and a healthy stem tip | Making a new plant from existing growth | Illinois Extension identifies stem-tip cuttings as a propagation option; it does not provide a comparative success rate here. |
| Division | An established plant that can be separated | Expanding or rejuvenating an existing clump | Illinois and Wisconsin Extension both list division; neither source establishes a universal timing or yield advantage over seed. |
The sources do not provide comparable germination percentages or time-to-harvest figures, so choose by what plant material you already have rather than by an unsupported ranking.
6. Protect young plants from roaming cats
Cats can break stems or graze small plants before they establish. Wisconsin Extension specifically recommends considering protection such as a cage or a hanging basket. Use a barrier while plants are vulnerable, particularly if neighborhood cats regularly visit the garden.
- A cage keeps paws and bodies off stems while allowing light and airflow.
- A hanging basket puts the plant out of reach when a suitable support is available.
- Check that any cover does not press against foliage or trap excessive moisture.
Once plants are established, they can survive for several years according to the Arizona guide, but repeated breakage can still reduce the harvest and distort the plant.
7. Water for establishment, then respond to conditions
Catnip generally prefers moist, well-drained conditions while it is getting started. After establishment it is described as drought-tolerant, so a fixed watering schedule would be misleading across different soils and climates.

Spring pinching encourages a denser ornamental shape, according to Wisconsin Extension. Illinois Extension also recommends cutting plants back during the season to keep them more compact and cutting in spring as growth resumes.
Make the first shaping cuts as active growth begins. Later, remove lanky or damaged stems instead of letting them sprawl into neighboring plants. Pruning is a shape and management tool; it is not a promise of a particular number of harvests in a home garden.
9. Choose harvest timing by the result you want
There is no single harvest stage supported for every purpose. Illinois Extension says flavor and aroma peak at full bloom. Arizona Extension’s home guide advises cutting stems before flowering, in early to mid-summer. Both recommendations should be understood in context rather than forced into one rule.
| Source recommendation | When to cut | How to use the advice |
|---|---|---|
| Illinois Extension | At full bloom | Use this timing when maximizing the flavor and aroma identified by that guidance. |
| Arizona Extension home guide | Before flowering, in early to mid-summer | Use this as the guide’s home-garden method; local weather and your intended use may shift the practical date. |
Watch the plant rather than relying only on a calendar. Mark the stage you choose so you can adjust the next harvest based on how the dried leaves perform for your intended use.

10. Cut above the crown to support regrowth
The University of Kentucky Center for Crop Diversification’s commercial profile advises cutting a few inches above the crown. That is a practical cutting method, not a guarantee that every home planting will produce the same regrowth.
The Kentucky profile says commercial plantings may be cut twice, in mid-summer and fall. Home gardens may not match those conditions, so make the first cut conservatively and observe how your plant responds before planning a second harvest. Leave the crown intact and avoid scalping the plant at soil level.

For small harvests, Illinois Extension recommends hanging stems in a cool, well-ventilated place. Arizona Extension describes spreading the material on a ventilated tray or screen away from direct sunlight and turning leaves daily.
- Cut clean stems and remove visibly damaged material.
- Hang small bunches or spread the stems in a single, airy layer on a screen or tray.
- Keep the harvest out of direct sun and in a place with steady ventilation.
- If using a tray or screen, turn the leaves daily so drying is even.
- Continue until the leaves are thoroughly dry; the Arizona guide describes the finished leaves as crumbly.
Drying time varies with humidity, airflow, leaf thickness, and how densely the material is arranged. Do not seal leaves while they still feel flexible or damp.

When the material is dry, remove the leaves from coarse stems. Store the leaves in sealed containers and label them with the plant species and harvest date. A tight seal protects the dried material from humidity that can soften it again.

What commercial labor figures do—and do not—tell a home gardener
The University of Kentucky Center for Crop Diversification profile lists approximately 64 hours of production labor, 52 hours of harvest labor, and six hours of processing labor for 1/5 acre. The profile text references 2021, while the search result identifies a 2024 PDF filename; no more precise publication year is established here.
Those figures are commercial-scale planning estimates, not a schedule or productivity benchmark for a backyard bed. A home gardener should use them only to understand that field production, repeated cutting, and processing require substantially more labor at scale.
Quick troubleshooting
Seedlings fail to appear
Recheck that the seed was true Nepeta cataria, that it was not buried deeper than the approximately 1/8-inch method described by the Arizona guide, and that the seedbed stayed adequately moist without becoming waterlogged.
Plants are flattened or missing stems
Roaming cats may be breaking or grazing the plants. Add a cage or move the planting to a hanging basket while it recovers.
Growth is thin and sprawling
Improve light if possible and pinch or cut back during active growth. Catnip tolerates light shade, but full sun is the more dependable default for compact growth.
Dried leaves soften in storage
They were likely sealed before fully dry or exposed to humid air. Remove questionable material, dry the sound leaves again with airflow, and use a clean sealed container only when the leaves are fully dry.
