To play with a cat, move a wand-toy lure like prey—across the ground or through the air—so your cat can stalk, chase, pounce and catch it. Keep your hands and feet out of the game. That gives your cat a suitable target while helping prevent human skin from becoming part of the play routine.
Choose a toy that keeps your hands out of the target role

Avoid wiggling your fingers or toes as bait, or keeping your hands close to the lure. The AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines advise against using hands and feet in play. If a kitten grabs or bites you during play, UC Davis recommends redirecting its attention to an appropriate toy in its guidance on managing rough kitten play.

Make the toy something your cat can pursue, not a lure that darts randomly right in front of its face. AAFP and ISFM describe moving a wand like flying prey or like ground prey moving swiftly away from the cat. Try short, variable movements, pauses and changes of direction. Let the lure slip behind an obstacle and reappear, giving your cat a chance to watch, stalk and pounce.

Allow your cat to catch the lure at times. The point is to invite a sequence of stalking, chasing and catching, rather than keeping the toy perpetually out of reach. Adjust the pace to your cat’s interest and movement: some cats will chase an active lure, while others may engage more when it pauses or moves slowly.
Choose between interactive play and food foraging
Wand play and food-based foraging offer different kinds of engagement. The guidelines describe feeding devices and play-based enrichment as options; they do not establish that one is better for every cat or compare them in a head-to-head trial.

Adapt play to your cat’s comfort and safety
- Keep stringed or teaser toys put away when active supervision ends. The cited guidelines support supervised interactive play but do not specify a particular storage protocol.
- Let your cat pursue a lure at a comfortable pace; do not encourage uncontrolled leaps onto hard surfaces, especially if your cat has limited mobility.
- Choose between movement-based play and food foraging according to what interests your cat and what it can comfortably do.
The available guidelines do not establish one ideal play duration or daily schedule for every cat. Offer play regularly, watch your cat’s response and adjust the activity rather than relying on a universal minute count.

Know when a change is not just a play problem
If your cat suddenly loses interest in play, reacts as if touch hurts, or shows another unusual behavior change or medical sign, seek veterinary advice. A change like this should not automatically be treated as a training issue. Persistent rough play may also call for advice from a veterinarian and, when appropriate, a qualified feline behavior professional.
