Prepare your cat by checking its health and the route’s rules first, then gradually acclimating it to a secure carrier, planning safe transport, and setting up a quiet familiar space at your destination. The right plan depends on your cat and your exact itinerary, so involve your veterinarian and verify airline or border requirements before booking.
Decide whether and how your cat should travel
Before choosing a car, flight, or other transport, ask your veterinarian whether your cat is fit for the specific trip. Share the route and mode of travel, and discuss medical history, heart or breathing concerns, motion sickness, anxiety, current vaccinations, and any medication or precautions. For some cats, another care arrangement may be less stressful than travel; UC Davis recommends weighing whether the cat can handle the trip against options such as staying with a pet sitter. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine’s traveling-with-cats guidance covers these considerations.
Compare the whole itinerary—not just time in the car or plane. Consider total duration, transfers, containment and escape risks, your cat’s tolerance, paperwork, and access to veterinary help along the way. Car travel may make it easier to monitor your cat, while air travel can involve airline-specific handling and may be more stressful. Neither option is best for every cat; ask your veterinarian to assess your animal against the actual trip.
Check airline and destination requirements early
If you are flying, contact the airline operating each leg before you buy a ticket. Confirm that cats are accepted on your itinerary, whether cabin or cargo travel is available, carrier dimensions, documentation, and handling policies. Requirements can differ between airlines, and airlines may impose rules in addition to government requirements. Recheck the current policy before departure. The FDA’s pet travel guidance advises checking airline requirements.

For travel across state or national borders, confirm the official requirements for the exact destination and route. Depending on the destination, an international U.S. export may require a microchip, particular vaccinations, tests, treatments, or paperwork. A health certificate can have a limited validity window after endorsement, so do not assume that one general deadline applies to every trip. USDA APHIS advises contacting a USDA-accredited veterinarian as soon as travel is decided and checking destination rules for each trip because they can change. Make the carrier familiar before moving day
Choose a sturdy carrier in good condition that lets your cat stand, sit, lie down, and turn around comfortably. Check the door and fasteners. A top- and side-opening carrier can make placing a reluctant cat easier, according to Cats Protection’s 2025 guide to travelling with cats.

- Put the carrier open in a familiar room well before the trip, rather than bringing it out only when it is time to leave.
- Add familiar bedding or a toy. Let your cat investigate at its own pace; do not force it inside.
- Build positive associations with treats, toys, or meals placed in the carrier.
- When your cat is comfortable entering it, close the door briefly, then work up to short car rides and gradually longer drives.
UC Davis recommends making the carrier accessible, feeding in it, and practicing short trips. Familiar smells and surroundings can help the carrier feel less unfamiliar. If a towel or blanket over the carrier helps your cat hide, preserve ventilation and follow the carrier’s instructions; the Feline Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 motor-vehicle position statement recommends giving cats an opportunity to hide.
Keep your cat secure in the car
Keep your cat inside a closed, secure carrier during the drive. Secure the carrier so it cannot shift, and make sure it is ventilated. The FelineVMA recommends placing it on the vehicle floor behind the driver or passenger seat. Use a seat belt only with a carrier certified in crash testing; a belt can crush a carrier that has not been designed and tested for that use. - At stops, keep the cat in its carrier unless you are inside a fully secured, enclosed space.
- Do not open a car door or window while the cat is loose in the vehicle.
- Bring water, a bowl, usual food, medication, relevant documents, familiar bedding, litter supplies, cleaning materials, and basic first-aid supplies.
Ask your veterinarian how to time food if your cat is prone to nausea or has a medical condition. CDC advises feeding pets three to four hours before a trip to help prevent car sickness or vomiting; confirm whether that timing is appropriate for your cat with its veterinarian.
Plan carefully for a flight or other transport
Ask your veterinarian whether your cat is fit to fly and discuss the specific itinerary, including any transfers. Check the operating airline’s current carrier and handling rules, and follow official requirements for every border crossing. CDC advises planning weeks ahead; international travel may involve additional planning and health steps. USDA APHIS’s destination-specific process is the relevant starting point for U.S. international exports.

Do not give sedatives or anti-anxiety medication unless your veterinarian directs you to. The FDA cautions that sedatives can reduce an animal’s ability to respond to its surroundings. If medication may be needed, discuss it with your veterinarian in advance rather than experimenting on travel day.

Prepare a quiet place for your cat as soon as practical after arrival. Put out familiar food and water, the litter setup, bedding, and a hiding place so the surroundings include recognizable objects and smells. Keep your cat’s identification current, and check that the microchip registry has working contact details.

Before you need help, identify nearby veterinary hospitals and emergency services and keep their contact information accessible. Observe your cat’s health and behavior daily during the trip and after arrival. If you notice a concerning change, contact a local veterinarian. The CDC’s pet travel safety guidance recommends daily health checks and having local emergency veterinary contacts available.
