Hiding after a move is a common way for a cat to cope with unfamiliar surroundings. Give your cat a quiet, secure room with familiar scents, food, water, a litter tray and a place to hide; don’t pull them out or rush them into exploring. Let your cat set the pace, and contact a veterinarian if they stop eating or you’re concerned about their health.
Why is my cat hiding after we moved?
A move changes the territory, scents, sounds and routines your cat knows. Cats Protection notes that hiding can be one response to this disruption, alongside changes in eating, scratching, toileting or hissing. Hiding alone doesn’t mean your cat has rejected you or won’t settle; it may simply be a sign that the new environment feels uncertain.
Give your cat a safe place to retreat rather than trying to make them socialize. A calm setup and gradual access to the home can help them adjust.
How to help your cat feel safe after a move
Set up a quiet base room
When you arrive, place your cat in one quiet, secure room and keep the door closed. Provide their bed, familiar blankets, litter tray, food and water, scratching post and toys. Add a hiding place, such as a cardboard box, so they can choose when to be seen. An unwashed item of your clothing can also provide a familiar scent.

Let your cat choose whether to approach
Give your cat time undisturbed in the room. Don’t reach into a hiding place or pull them out. If you sit nearby, keep quiet and speak gently; leave if your presence seems to make them more anxious. Cats Protection recommends patient, non-forced interaction while a cat gets used to a new home.
Make food and water easy to reach
Keep food and water accessible. If your cat is too shy to come out to eat, Cats Protection suggests moving the food bowl closer to the hiding place and then leaving the room. Keep an eye on eating, drinking and litter-tray use. Don’t assume a cat’s failure to eat is just moving stress: appetite loss can have medical as well as psychological causes. Cornell’s Feline Health Center advises contacting a veterinarian immediately when you notice signs of anorexia.

Allow exploration in stages
Keep your cat in the base room for a few days before opening up the rest of the home. The whole house can feel overwhelming at once, and readiness to explore varies from cat to cat. When your cat starts venturing out, leave the base room open as a retreat rather than removing their safe place.
Before allowing access to other areas, secure outside doors, windows and cat flaps. Tell household members and movers which room the cat is in; a sign on the door can help prevent someone opening it by mistake.

Keep familiar scents and consider optional pheromone support
Bring familiar bedding and blankets into the new home. Cats Protection also suggests gently transferring your cat’s facial scent to furniture at cat height with a clean cloth, and leaving an unwashed clothing item nearby. A synthetic feline pheromone diffuser or spray is another option mentioned in its guidance, but it is not a guaranteed solution.
How long will my cat hide after moving?
There is no single timetable that suits every cat. Cats Protection recommends keeping a cat in a safe room for a few days, then letting them explore when they seem ready. Look for gradual changes rather than expecting your cat to settle by a fixed deadline.

Signs that your cat may be adjusting include exploring more, hiding less, eating well, playing, grooming regularly, seeking company or rubbing against people and objects. If stress continues without improvement or you’re worried, ask your veterinarian for advice.

Moving day brings extra open doors and unfamiliar people, so plan how to keep your cat contained. Use a secure carrier your cat is familiar with for transport. Cats Protection suggests that a pheromone spray on the carrier at least 15 minutes before putting your cat in may be used as an optional measure.

- Keep the base-room door closed and tell everyone in the household where the cat is.
- Use a door sign to reduce the chance of someone opening the room accidentally.
- Keep the carrier secure during transport and make sure doors, windows and cat flaps are closed before your cat explores.
If your cat normally goes outdoors, keep them inside while they establish the new home. Cats Protection advises keeping cats indoors for at least three weeks after a move; follow your veterinarian’s or local animal welfare authority’s advice for your location and circumstances before letting your cat out.
When to contact a veterinarian
Don’t dismiss appetite loss as a normal reaction to moving. Cornell’s Feline Health Center explains that sustained loss of appetite can have varied causes, including illness, and can seriously affect a mature cat’s health if it persists for as little as 24 hours. It advises consulting a veterinarian immediately when signs of feline anorexia appear. Contact your veterinarian if your cat is not eating, appetite loss persists, distress does not improve, or you notice other health or toileting changes.
