Start with the route, then match your dog’s preparation to the transport mode, weather and border rules. A safe summer trip requires a veterinary check, current identification and records, secure restraint or an approved carrier, heat precautions, a practical travel kit and an emergency plan. Requirements differ by destination, airline and travel history, so verify the current instructions before you leave.

1. Check the route and travel rules first

Do this as soon as you book or seriously consider the trip. Rules can apply to the destination, every state or territory you pass through, the airline or other carrier, and your return route.

Domestic travel

A destination state or territory may require a health certificate, updated vaccinations, testing or a treatment. The rules are not uniform across the United States; check the current requirements for each destination with the USDA APHIS state-to-state guidance and your veterinarian.

International travel

Countries can set their own requirements for microchips, vaccinations, laboratory tests, parasite treatments, certificates and USDA endorsement. The process may take weeks or months. Use the USDA APHIS Pet Travel Process Overview and contact a USDA-accredited veterinarian early. Ask what must happen before departure, which forms need an official endorsement and whether the certificate has a limited validity period.

Plan the return, too

U.S. entry rules can depend on where the dog was vaccinated and whether it has traveled through a country considered high risk for dog rabies. A specific high-risk-country scenario is described in the CDC’s foreign-vaccinated dog guidance. Air layovers can also trigger import requirements depending on travel history and itinerary; review the CDC’s layover rules rather than assuming a transit stop is exempt.

Ask the carrier before buying a ticket

Airlines set their own limits for cabin or cargo travel, carrier dimensions, breed restrictions, seasonal embargoes, temperature limits and paperwork. Get the current policy in writing or from the airline’s official booking channel, and confirm the requirements again shortly before departure.

2. Schedule a veterinary travel check

Book an appointment early enough to complete vaccinations, tests, treatments and certificates. Ask the veterinarian to assess whether your dog’s age, medical history, fitness, temperament and heat tolerance suit the planned journey.

  • Review rabies and other routine vaccinations, and obtain a dated record.
  • Discuss motion sickness, anxiety, chronic medicines, dietary needs and how to transport prescriptions.
  • Ask about flea, tick, heartworm and other parasite prevention for the destination.
  • For international travel, use a USDA-accredited veterinarian when the destination requires official certification or endorsement.
  • Discuss air travel specifically if your dog is elderly, has heart or breathing disease, is recovering from illness or has a short muzzle.

Do not give a sedative simply to make travel easier. Medication can affect breathing and temperature regulation, especially during air travel; use only a plan prescribed and explained by your veterinarian.

3. Update identification and carry the right records

Make it possible to identify your dog if it escapes during a rest stop, at an airport or at a lodging property.

  • Have the microchip scanned and confirm its registration contains your current phone number, email and an alternate contact.
  • Use a secure collar tag with your mobile number and temporary destination details when practical.
  • Carry a paper copy and a digital backup of the rabies certificate, vaccination history, health certificate, prescriptions and emergency contacts.
  • Keep the veterinarian’s name and number, your regular clinic’s records and a local 24-hour emergency veterinary contact.

A document accepted for one border or itinerary may not satisfy another. Check the issue date, signature, endorsement and expiration requirements for the exact trip instead of relying on an old certificate.

4. Acclimate your dog and secure it in the car

Practice before the long drive. Begin with short, calm trips and increase duration gradually, rewarding relaxed behavior. If your dog pants heavily, drools, vomits, trembles or tries to escape, stop the progression and ask your veterinarian about motion sickness or anxiety.

Use a proper restraint

Transport the dog in a secured crate or in a crash-tested-style back-seat harness attached to the seat buckle. The crate should be anchored so it cannot slide or tip. A harness must fit snugly without restricting breathing and must connect to the manufacturer’s intended attachment point. Never let the dog roam freely in the passenger area, ride in the front seat with an active airbag or hang its head outside the window.

Schedule regular stops

Plan bathroom and movement breaks at predictable intervals, using a leash before opening a door. Carry water and keep the dog away from traffic, unfamiliar off-leash areas and hot pavement. Feed according to your veterinarian’s advice; CDC guidance recommends feeding a pet 3 to 4 hours before departure to reduce car sickness or vomiting.

Road versus air: choose for the individual dog

Consideration Road travel Air travel
Restraint Secured crate or back-seat harness; frequent supervised stops Airline-accepted carrier or kennel secured according to the carrier’s rules
Heat exposure Vehicle loading, rest stops and outdoor breaks require constant monitoring Airport ramps, tarmac delays and seasonal temperature restrictions add risk
Dog’s needs Usually allows gradual acclimation and more control over breaks Temperament, health, muzzle shape and stress tolerance need a specific veterinary assessment
Paperwork lead time Depends on each state or territory crossed Airline, destination and possible import documents; verify timing before booking
Transitions More driving time but fewer handoffs when planned carefully Direct flights reduce layovers, transfers and time in unfamiliar environments

5. Make a strict no-parked-car rule

Never leave your dog alone in a parked vehicle, even for a quick stop, even in shade and even with a window cracked. CDC says, “Never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle,” and notes that a car interior can rise almost 20°F within the first 10 minutes even when a window is open slightly. Its heat guidance explains that cars can reach dangerous temperatures very quickly: CDC Heat and Pets.

Arrange drive-through meals, use pet-friendly stops where someone can stay with the dog, or have one traveler remain in the vehicle with the air conditioning running and the dog supervised. A cracked window is not a safety measure. During walks, provide fresh water, seek shade and avoid the hottest part of the day. Watch for heavy panting, weakness, confusion, vomiting, collapse or abnormal gum color; move the dog to a cooler place and seek emergency veterinary care immediately if heat illness is suspected.

Choose and test the carrier

The dog must be able to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in the carrier while retaining adequate ventilation. Measure the dog and compare those measurements with the airline’s permitted dimensions; a carrier that is comfortable but too large for the aircraft may be rejected. Check that doors, fasteners and handles are secure, and practice calm time inside it well before travel.

Allow for certificate timing

USDA APHIS’s air-travel lesson says the health and acclimation certificate described there must be signed by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel. That is not a universal rule for every itinerary: the destination, airline and transport category may impose different timing or forms. Read the current APHIS air-travel guidance and your airline’s instructions together.

Consider heat and breathing risk

Short-nosed dogs have a higher risk of breathing difficulty and heat stroke under stress or extreme heat. APHIS also describes air-transport rules for dogs and cats that are at least 8 weeks old and fully weaned. Age, breed, health and weather can still make a particular flight unsuitable, so obtain a dog-specific veterinary opinion and prefer a direct flight when possible.

  • Rabies proof, vaccination records, health certificates, permits and copies of prescriptions
  • Your veterinarian’s contact details and a destination emergency clinic

Keep food changes to a minimum during travel. Sudden diet changes can add stomach upset to the stress of a journey.

8. Control outdoor exposure

Keep your dog leashed or in a secure enclosure and supervise every outdoor break. Do not allow contact with stray animals or wildlife, which can transmit injuries and disease. Prevent drinking from stagnant, visibly contaminated or unknown water; offer the water you packed instead.

Inspect the dog after hikes, campground stays and grassy rest areas, especially between the toes, around the ears, under the collar and in the armpits. Remove ticks promptly with an appropriate tool. Ask your veterinarian whether the dog’s regular flea, tick, heartworm and intestinal-parasite prevention is adequate for the destination, season and activities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Plan for emergencies and monitor your dog daily

Save offline copies of directions to veterinary hospitals along the route and near your lodging. Identify an emergency clinic before you need one, since a sick or injured dog may not tolerate a long search.

Carry a simple response plan

  • Know who will handle the leash, documents, medications and vehicle if the dog escapes or becomes ill.
  • Keep first-aid supplies accessible, but do not substitute them for veterinary treatment.
  • Record the dog’s normal appetite, energy, breathing and bathroom habits before departure.
  • Check the dog each day for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, limping, coughing, breathing changes, heat signs, bites or ticks.

Contact a veterinarian promptly for concerning changes, particularly after heat exposure, an encounter with wildlife, ingestion of unknown water or food, or a missed dose of essential medication. A calm, documented response is safer than waiting for a problem to resolve while traveling.

A final pre-departure checklist

  • Destination, border, airline and return rules checked for the exact itinerary
  • Veterinary examination completed and required vaccinations, tests, treatments and certificates scheduled
  • Microchip registration, collar tag and contact details verified
  • Crate or harness fitted, secured and practiced
  • Carrier dimensions and airline acceptance confirmed if flying
  • No-parked-car plan arranged for every stop
  • Water, usual food, medicines, records and first-aid supplies packed
  • Leashes, waste bags, shade and safe water planned for outdoor breaks
  • Regular and emergency veterinary contacts saved
