Ask the shelter about the individual pet’s health, behavior, current food, transport, and transition needs; its guidance should shape your setup.
Start with a calm home base
Choose a quiet, secure area where your new pet can rest and observe without having to meet everyone or explore the whole home at once. A room with a washable resting spot, water, and the appropriate food is a practical starting point. For a cat, include a litter box and places to hide or rest. ASPCA’s adoption tips recommend a dedicated safe area; its settling-in guidance also recommends beginning in one room and expanding access as the animal becomes comfortable.
Keep the first interactions low-pressure. Let the pet approach people and resident animals at its own pace rather than forcing contact. Use a closed door or a secure gate to keep the starting area manageable, and decide in advance which rooms will remain off-limits initially.
Pet-proof the space before the animal arrives
Inspect the home from the pet’s level. Young animals may chew, climb, or swallow things that adults ignore, but the same hazards can affect any newly adopted pet. Secure electrical cords, check doors and windows—including screens—and remove small objects that could be chewed or swallowed.

Prepare the basics for a dog
Have the following ready for a dog’s first days:
- Food and water bowls; ask whether to begin with the food the dog currently eats.
- A collar with identification and a leash or harness for controlled movement.
- A bed or designated resting place, plus a few appropriate toys.
- A gate or closed-door plan for limiting access to areas that are not ready for the dog.
A crate may suit some dogs, but it is not a universal requirement. If you use one, make sure it is appropriate for that individual dog and introduce it positively and humanely. ASPCA’s dog adoption advice discusses matching a dog to your lifestyle and preparing supplies; the AVMA’s dog-selection brochure also supports basic preparation and keeping cords out of reach.

Prepare the basics for a cat
Set up a cat’s starting room with a litter box, litter, food and water bowls, a scratching post, and a few toys. A perch or other elevated resting place can offer a useful retreat. Include hiding options, and keep the litter box in the quiet starting area so the cat does not need to cross an unfamiliar home to find it.
Use a secure carrier for transport. The ASPCA New York City Adoption Center says cats and kittens must leave in a carrier, but that is a local policy, not a universal rule. Ask the shelter or rescue handling your adoption what carrier and handover arrangements it requires. Its adoption-process information is specific to that center.

Use the shelter’s advice to tailor the setup
Before adoption day, ask the organization handling the adoption about the animal’s age, known health or behavior needs, current food, and recommended supplies. Confirm how transport and handover work, and ask whether the pet has particular transition recommendations. A puppy, kitten, older animal, pet with known needs, or home with resident animals may call for a different arrangement than a healthy adult arriving alone.
If you rent or live in a building with pet rules, check those requirements before bringing the animal home. For example, the ASPCA’s New York City adoption information advises adopters to check building pet policies; rules and center procedures can change, so verify current details directly with the relevant organization.

Make the first days gradual
Keep the routine calm and predictable, and give the animal time to watch and learn. Once it is comfortable in its home base, allow access to additional areas gradually, supervising as needed and keeping hazards blocked. Let the pet choose when to explore or interact rather than treating immediate sociability as the goal.
ASPCA’s “3-3-3 Guideline” is a rough adjustment framework, not a guaranteed timetable for every adopted animal. Focus on the individual pet’s signals and the shelter’s recommendations rather than expecting a fixed schedule. If a health or behavior concern arises, contact the shelter and your veterinarian for advice.
