Prepare one quiet, secure area before your small rescue dog arrives, with water, familiar or comfortable bedding, and a calm place to eat. Put away hazards, secure doors and gates, and let the dog explore gradually. Ask the rescue about the dog’s current routine and health records; your veterinarian can help tailor care to the dog’s history and local needs.

Set up a calm starting area

Choose a quiet, low-traffic room or defined area where the dog can rest without being approached constantly. A door or secure barrier can help keep the space predictable and limit access while the dog settles in. Put down a bed or familiar bedding, provide water, and place the feeding area away from household traffic. Cornell University and Wisconsin Humane Society both recommend a secure, quiet starting space for a new dog.

Keep the area simple rather than filling it with new objects. Familiar bedding or toys from the rescue may help make the space less unfamiliar, if the rescue can provide them. Let the dog choose when to leave its resting spot; do not use the area as a place to force interaction.

Dog-proof the home and yard

A small dog can reach hazards that are easy to overlook at floor level. Before arrival, inspect the dog’s accessible rooms from its height and put away cords, small or breakable objects, shoes, children’s toys, medicines, cleaning products, garden chemicals, and food the dog should not reach. Close off stairs or rooms if needed.

Check exterior doors, gates, and fencing for gaps or easy escape routes. For first garden visits, use a lead and supervise closely rather than assuming the dog will stay nearby. SPCA New Zealand recommends leashed, supervised garden visits at first. Keep the lead ready for outdoor trips and early exploration.

Choose a resting place that suits this dog

An open bed in a quiet room may be enough. A crate is another option for some dogs, but it is not required and is not a good fit for every individual. Choose based on the dog’s comfort with confinement and whether it can retreat voluntarily. If using a crate, it should allow the dog to sit and stand at full height, turn around, stretch, and lie down comfortably.

Cornell cautions that crate training may not suit dogs with a history of separation anxiety or confinement distress. If the dog appears distressed, use a different safe-haven arrangement and ask the rescue or veterinarian for advice.

Make the first days gradual and predictable

Start in the prepared area, keep visitors and household activity low, and allow the dog to explore additional rooms gradually under supervision. Let the dog approach people at its own pace. Preserve familiar routines where possible, including feeding times and walks, and avoid leaving the dog alone for a long absence before you know how it copes. Build time alone gradually.

Some hiding or hesitation can occur during adjustment. Watch the dog’s body language and give it more space if it seems stressed; do not force contact or exploration. AAHA describes the “3-3-3 rule” as an expectation-setting framework for the first three days, three weeks, and three months. It is not a guaranteed schedule or a deadline by which every dog will settle.

Plan introductions to children and other pets

Keep resident animals separate from the new dog when no one is supervising. Arrange gradual introductions and supervise interactions, keeping existing pets’ routines and feeding separate while everyone adjusts. A gate or closed door can help manage access, depending on the home and the animals.

Teach children to approach gently and leave the dog undisturbed while it is eating, sleeping, or using its safe space. If introductions involve serious aggression or do not improve, seek help from a qualified animal-behavior professional or veterinarian rather than trying to force the animals together.

Get the dog’s care details before arrival

Ask the rescue for available health records, the dog’s current food and feeding routine, and any care instructions related to its history. Arrange veterinary follow-up appropriate to the individual dog. Vaccination, registration, and disease-exposure considerations vary by location, so confirm local requirements and health advice with the rescue and veterinarian. Puppy-specific socialization or vaccination guidance should not automatically be applied in the same way to an adult rescue dog.
