How to Prepare Your Pet for a Routine Vet Visit

Practise handling in short sessions, make the carrier or car ride familiar, bring your pet's history and questions, confirm test-specific instructions, and call ahead if your pet has intense fear.

A routine checkup goes more smoothly when your dog or cat has already practiced the parts of the visit that are hardest for it: being handled, travelling in a carrier or car, and waiting near other animals. Start at home with short, calm sessions, arrange secure transport, bring the history your veterinarian needs, confirm any test-specific instructions with the clinic, and call ahead if your pet has intense fear. Preparation can support a calmer visit, but individual animals respond differently, so no approach guarantees a stress-free one.

Practice handling at home before the appointment

Most examinations involve touching the paws, ears, mouth, and body, and a pet that has learned to tolerate light handling at home is easier to examine. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends short handling sessions with rewards for both dogs and cats, in its guidance “Preparing your pet for a successful veterinary visit” (published 2026-02-10).

A simple handling routine

  1. Choose a quiet moment when your pet is relaxed, and sit at its level.
  2. Touch one area a vet is likely to check, such as a paw, an ear, or the side of the body, for only a moment.
  3. Reward immediately with something your pet clearly values. Tailor the reward to the animal, since some pets prefer soft treats and others prefer play or praise.
  4. End the session while your pet is still comfortable, before it tries to move away.
  5. Lengthen each touch and add new areas gradually over several sessions.

Do not turn practice into a struggle. If your pet shows intense fear, pull back and ask the veterinary team for a plan rather than pushing through.

Make travel ordinary before appointment day

Transport is where many visits begin to go wrong, so the carrier or car ride should be familiar long before the appointment. The table below compares the two species, because the practical steps differ.

Preparation point Dogs Cats
Arrival restraint Leash Secure carrier, kept closed until the team is ready for the cat
Carrier or travel equipment Use an appropriate carrier or restraint your dog already accepts Keep the carrier out in a familiar room, with the door open
Building comfort Basic settling skills and a leash that feels routine Soft bedding or a familiar scent inside, plus an occasional meal, treat, or enrichment item in the carrier
Car practice Calm car rides that do not always end at the clinic Lifting practice, then short car trips once the cat enters the carrier willingly
Waiting Ask whether you can wait outside or in the car if the reception area is busy Ask whether a quieter space or waiting in the car is possible

Cats: start with the carrier, not the car

Leave the carrier open in a room the cat already uses, and put soft bedding or a familiar-smelling item inside. Occasionally offer a meal, a treat, or an enrichment item inside the carrier so the cat has a reason to return to it. Once the cat enters willingly, practise lifting the carrier and then take short car trips. The American Association of Feline Practitioners and the International Society of Feline Medicine, in their “Feline-Friendly Handling Guidelines” (2012), describe carrier and handling practice as central to lower-stress cat visits. The CDC’s “Pet Travel Safety” advice (published 2026-04-15) also emphasises gradual practice drives and secure transport for animals in cars.

Dogs: teach calm car travel and settling

Dogs benefit most from car rides that do not always end at the clinic. A trip to a park or a short drive that returns home teaches the dog that the car does not always mean an examination. Pair this with basic settling skills, such as lying down on a mat, so the dog can wait calmly at the clinic. If your dog will use a carrier, practise with it at home in the same way as a cat carrier.

Gather the history and questions your veterinarian needs

A well-prepared owner brings information, not just the animal. Write down the following before you leave home:

  • Changes in appetite, drinking, weight, energy, toileting, or behaviour since the last visit
  • Questions you want answered, in priority order
  • Current medications, supplements, and the doses your pet receives
  • Past reactions to handling, travel, or other clinics, and what has helped
  • Known triggers, such as particular handling, noises, or other animals

If your pet is travelling or boarding, bring vaccination and medical records. The CDC’s travel guidance supports carrying these records for travel, but it does not establish a universal paperwork requirement for an ordinary wellness visit. Ask the clinic before the appointment whether it needs anything specific.

Confirm any fasting or test-specific instructions

Do not assume your pet must fast. The guidance reviewed for this article does not establish a universal fasting rule for a routine checkup. Preparation depends on the planned examination and tests. VCA Animal Hospitals notes in “Preparing Your Pet for a Blood Test” that instructions vary with the particular blood test. Ask the clinic whether food, water, or medication instructions apply to your appointment, and follow the clinic’s answer rather than general advice.

On the day of the visit

  • Use a leash for a dog. Use a secure carrier for a cat, and keep the cat inside it until the veterinary team is ready to proceed.
  • Bring a familiar toy or bedding that carries your pet’s scent.
  • Bring small, high-value treats if they suit the animal and the visit. Ask staff first if you are unsure.
  • Tell the team what your pet finds difficult and what has helped before.

AAHA names KONG-style food toys as examples of enrichment items. That is an illustration, not a product test, and the choice should depend on what your pet accepts.

Plan for the waiting room

Busy reception areas are often the hardest part for animals that are nervous around strangers or other pets. Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, in guidance titled “How to make veterinary visits less stressful for dogs,” discusses quieter waiting and brief, positive visits. Clinics vary in what they can offer, so ask in advance.

Option What to ask the clinic What to consider
Quieter room Is a separate or quieter room available when you arrive? Depends on the clinic’s layout and staffing; may need to be requested in advance.
Outdoor waiting Can I wait outside with my dog on a leash until called? Suits dogs that handle the outdoors calmly; not a cat option unless the clinic specifically agrees.
Waiting in the car Can we wait in the car until the team is ready? Keep the pet secure and check how the team will call you; follow the clinic’s instructions.
Brief positive visit Do you offer a short visit for treats and praise, without a full examination? Availability varies by clinic; ask whether it is offered and how it is scheduled.

Compare how your pet responds to each option, and let the clinic’s instructions decide which one is used on the day.

When to call the clinic before appointment day

Contact the veterinary team before the appointment if your pet shows any of the following during handling or travel practice:

  • Intense fear, or attempts to escape from the carrier, car, or examination area
  • Freezing, persistent vocalising, or aggression
  • Travel sickness that repeats despite gradual practice

Describe the history and what you have already tried. Ask whether a pre-visit plan is appropriate. Cornell’s guidance and AAHA’s advice both note that veterinarians can discuss medication for some anxious animals. Medication is one option for some animals, not a standard requirement, and it should be chosen by a veterinarian after assessing your pet. Never give your pet a sedative or any other drug on your own initiative, and never work out a dose from general information.
