Preventing a dog bite starts with active adult supervision, calm interactions, and a way to separate the child and dog whenever an adult cannot intervene. No dog is guaranteed bite-proof: familiarity, size, breed, and training do not remove the need for precautions.
Supervise every interaction
Stay close enough to step in whenever a young child is with a dog, including a familiar family pet. The CDC advises against leaving young children to play with dogs unsupervised, even if they have met before; the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) likewise says children should not be left alone with dogs, including well-trained pets. CDC dog-bite prevention guidance and AVMA guidance explain these precautions.

If you cannot actively supervise, separate the child and dog. A separate room, crate, or fenced area can help manage the dog in appropriate situations, according to the AVMA. A secure barrier may also help keep them apart, but it is a management aid—not a replacement for supervision.

Make everyday interactions safer
Give dogs space when they need it
Teach children not to approach or disturb a dog that is eating, sleeping, caring for puppies, hiding, or trying to get away. Avoid rough play, teasing, hugging, grabbing ears or tails, taking toys or bones, and putting a face close to a dog’s face. These situations can make a dog uncomfortable or feel threatened. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ dog-bite prevention tips and AVMA guidance cover these household risks.

The twist on each side of the strap is part of a unique design, ensuring a better fit for your dog’s head shape. This is a thoughtful feature, not a defect, aimed at providing a more comfortable and secure fit
- Prevent Muzzle Slippage: An incorrect size, improper fit, or lack of muzzle training can cause the dog to remove the cage muzzle. Adjust the straps to ensure a snug fit—secure enough to keep the basket muzzle for dogs in place without causing discomfort. Check the head strap to prevent slippage. Refer to the included instructions to help your dog adjust to the dog muzzles to prevent biting
- Desensitizing Your Dog to a Muzzle: Many dogs may resist wearing cage muzzles for dogs initially, especially if they've never worn one before. To help them adjust, use gradual desensitization training—start with short periods and reward calm behavior. Over time, your dog will accept it as part of their routine
Approach unfamiliar dogs cautiously
Children should not approach an unfamiliar dog, even if it seems friendly, or reach through a fence to touch one. Teach them to ask the owner before petting a dog. If the owner agrees, let the dog approach and sniff first; keep the interaction gentle and give the dog room to move away. Adults should manage introductions between a new dog and children rather than leaving the children to handle them.
Recognize discomfort and create space
A dog may communicate discomfort by turning away, moving out of reach, stiffening, growling, yawning, holding its ears back, raising a paw, tucking its tail, or staring with a stiff posture. These signs can help an adult decide to end an interaction, but they are not a dependable forecast of whether a particular dog will bite. Dogs differ, and no single checklist can guarantee prediction.

If a dog seems uncomfortable, stop the child’s interaction and calmly move the child away. Do not punish or pressure the dog for signaling discomfort; focus on creating space and preventing the situation from continuing. If a dog shows excessive fear or aggression, or behavior that seems unprovoked, ask a veterinarian for advice. Regular veterinary care matters because pain or illness can affect behavior. The AVMA also recommends positive training and socialization, leash use in public, and secure containment.
Teach children what to do around an approaching dog
If an unfamiliar dog approaches, teach children to stay calm and still, avoid direct eye contact, and turn their body sideways. They should not run, scream, or make sudden movements. Wait for the dog to move on or slowly back away when it is safe to do so. If knocked down, curl into a ball and protect the head, ears, and neck with the hands; use a bag or jacket as a barrier if one is available. These are the CDC’s recommended steps for an encounter with an unfamiliar dog.

Choose and manage a household dog thoughtfully
Breed rankings are not a useful shortcut for preventing bites. The AVMA recommends focusing on behavior rather than breed. When considering whether a dog and household are a suitable fit, weigh the dog’s known behavior and bite history, how it behaves around children, the child’s age and ability to follow rules, the adults’ capacity to supervise, and whether the home can reliably keep child and dog apart when needed. The AAP advises avoiding animals with behavioral issues or a history of aggression or bites.

- Wash the wound promptly with soap and water.
- Contact the child’s pediatrician promptly. A clinician can assess wound care and whether antibiotics, tetanus prevention, or rabies evaluation may be needed.
- Get emergency care for a severe bite. Do not delay urgent treatment while trying to gather details.
- When feasible, obtain the dog’s owner and vaccination information for the child’s clinician.
The CDC reports that nearly one in five people bitten by a dog requires medical attention. The AVMA’s April 9, 2026 release says more than 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year in the United States and children account for at least half of those injuries; the release does not describe a new study methodology for that estimate. CDC dog-bite data and the AVMA’s April 9, 2026 release provide those figures.
