The most reliable way to protect a couch while still allowing your dog to use it is to add a fitted, removable furniture protector or washable couch cover. It creates a washable layer between the dog and the upholstery, so hair and everyday dirt are collected on the cover instead of worked into the sofa. Choose coverage that matches your sofa, measure before buying, follow the cover’s care label, and treat the fabric as a sacrificial layer—not a guarantee against liquid leaks or claw damage.
What protects a couch best?
Start with a washable dog couch cover or pet furniture protector sized for the sofa. The cover should protect the areas your dog actually uses: the seat, back, arms, chaise, or sectional sections as applicable. A removable layer makes routine cleaning practical because you can take it off, remove loose hair, and wash it instead of trying to clean every strand and muddy mark from the upholstery.

Orvis describes its dog-oriented furniture protectors as machine washable and intended to withstand dirt, water, and hair. Its sizing advice is to measure the sofa’s seat width between the arms, then compare that measurement with the individual product’s sizing guide. That second check matters because covers differ in how far they drape over the back, sides, arms, and chaise.

A cover is a management tool, not an all-purpose shield. A washable product is not automatically waterproof, and a woven protector is not necessarily claw-proof or snag-proof. The useful question is not whether a cover makes the sofa indestructible; it is whether the selected cover gives you the coverage, cleanability, grip, and level of liquid and scratch resistance your household needs.

Choose the cover by the protection problem
Hair and ordinary dirt
For shedding and daily grime, prioritize a cover that can be removed without wrestling it off the whole sofa and washed according to its care label. A cover that only sits on the seat may be adequate if your dog stays there. If the dog climbs onto the back, leans against the arms, or uses a chaise, a seat-only protector leaves those high-contact areas exposed.
Muddy paws
Look for enough drape to catch dirt where paws land and where the dog turns around. The cover will not eliminate the need to clean the dog’s paws, but it moves the mess onto a layer that can be taken off and laundered. Check the product’s stated liquid-protection claims separately; “washable” describes how the cover is cleaned, not how much liquid it blocks.
Scratching and digging
Use the cover as a replaceable surface that may take some wear in place of the upholstery. Do not buy on the assumption that any fabric is claw-proof. CouchCare says its woven protector is not claw-proof or snag-proof and may show wear when a pet scratches or digs. Repeated, forceful digging can therefore damage the cover and still reach the couch.
Measure the sofa before ordering
Correct sizing is the difference between a protector that stays reasonably positioned and one that exposes the upholstery after a few jumps. Measure the furniture itself, then use the exact manufacturer’s sizing chart for the product you are considering.
- Measure the seat width between the arms. This is the dimension Orvis specifically advises using for a sofa.
- Record the rest of the configuration. Note whether the piece has a chaise, a separate ottoman, a corner, or sectional sections. A standard sofa measurement may not describe an L-shaped layout accurately.
- Check the intended coverage. Confirm whether the product covers only the seat or also reaches the back, arms, and sides.
- Compare the measurements with the product guide. Do not assume that two covers labeled for the same furniture size have the same dimensions or drape.
- Plan for the dog’s preferred position. If your dog sleeps on the back cushions or presses against one arm, include those areas in the protection plan rather than measuring only the place where the dog first climbs up.
Keep your measurements with the product details. If the cover shifts or leaves a strip of upholstery exposed, you can identify whether the issue is an undersized cover, an unsuitable shape, or movement caused by the fabric and the dog’s activity.
Install the protector for the least movement
After checking the fit, spread the cover so the fabric reaches every intended contact area. Smooth the seat and back sections, pull the draped portions evenly over the sides, and avoid leaving a folded ridge where the dog will repeatedly step or dig.

CouchCare says its protector relies on weight, drape, and correct sizing rather than glue or a rubber backing. That construction means some adjustment is normal, especially on leather. If your sofa has a slick surface, expect to reposition the protector occasionally instead of treating movement as proof that the product is defective.

Remove dog hair between washes
CouchCare lists a lint roller, vacuum, or brush as options for loose hair on its protector and says hair washes out in the machine. Those are the maker’s suggested methods, not an independently tested ranking, so choose the tool that works with your cover’s weave and your dog’s hair type.
Lint roller
Use a lint roller for visible loose hair on a relatively flat section. Work in overlapping passes and replace the adhesive sheet when it stops picking up hair. A roller is a hair-removal tool; it is not a solution for mud, embedded grit, liquid, or claw damage.
Vacuum
A vacuum can collect hair from the seat, seams, and folds before the cover is removed. Use an attachment appropriate for fabric and avoid forcing a nozzle into the weave. Empty the canister or bag when airflow drops so hair is not redistributed.
Brush
A fabric-safe brush can gather loose hair into removable clumps. Test a small inconspicuous area first, particularly if the cover has a raised or delicate weave. Stop if the brush pulls loops or creates visible fuzzing.

Removing loose hair before laundering reduces the amount of fur released during handling and keeps the cover more manageable between washes. The cover’s own care instructions remain the controlling guidance for washing and drying.
Wash the cover without damaging it
CouchCare recommends washing its protectors on a cold, gentle cycle with mild detergent, then air drying or using a low-heat tumble-dry setting. Those instructions apply to that company’s protectors; another cover may specify different temperatures, detergents, or drying methods.
- Remove loose hair first. Use a lint roller, vacuum, or brush as appropriate for the fabric.
- Read the sewn-in care label. Follow the selected product’s instructions rather than transferring settings from another cover.
- Use the stated wash cycle and detergent. For CouchCare protectors, that means cold water, a gentle cycle, and mild detergent.
- Dry as directed. CouchCare allows air drying or low-heat tumble drying for its protectors. Avoid higher heat unless the product’s own label permits it.
- Refit only after the cover is fully dry. A damp cover can shift more easily and can leave moisture against the upholstery.
Keep the cover’s label or product instructions accessible. Washing a protector too hot, using an unsuitable cycle, or drying it at excessive heat can change its dimensions and undermine the fit you measured for.
Handle mud and everyday dirt
A protector catches much of the dirt that would otherwise settle into the couch, but it still needs prompt attention after muddy outings. Let heavy mud dry enough to lift without grinding it farther into the fabric, then remove the loose material before washing according to the care label.
Protect the uncovered furniture while the cover is off for cleaning. If your dog routinely returns from outside with wet or dirty paws, keep the dog away from the bare sofa until the protector is clean and dry, or designate a separate resting place. This is a practical way to prevent one cleaning cycle from simply transferring fresh dirt to the upholstery.
Coverage matters more than a perfect-looking center panel. Inspect the front edge, armrests, back cushions, and the area beside a chaise, because those are common places for paws and shedding hair to bypass a seat-only layer.

Understand liquid protection precisely
Do not equate “machine washable” with “waterproof.” CouchCare states that its cover does not provide a waterproof barrier and that liquids can soak through. If urine, vomit, spilled water, or another accident is a concern, select a product only when its own specifications explicitly support the level of liquid protection you need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck the wording before purchase: a product may be described as washable, water-resistant, or waterproof, and those terms imply different expectations. If the specification does not clearly promise a barrier, assume the upholstery may still be exposed and plan an accident-cleanup method for the sofa itself.
Set realistic expectations about claws
Claw marks are a behavior and material problem, not just a cleaning problem. A cover can absorb some routine wear and may be cheaper to replace than upholstery, but no reviewed evidence establishes that it will withstand every dog’s nails, digging, or repeated scratching.
CouchCare specifically says its woven protector is not claw-proof or snag-proof and can show wear when a pet scratches or digs. Watch for pulled threads, holes, or thinning fabric. Once the cover begins to fail, replace or repair it according to the maker’s instructions rather than assuming the couch beneath remains protected.
If your dog digs before settling, redirect that behavior to an appropriate bed or blanket and put the cover back only after the dog is calm. The protector should be one layer in a broader management plan, not a promise that forceful scratching cannot reach the sofa.
Build a simple maintenance routine
A cover works best when it is maintained before hair and dirt become embedded. Adapt the frequency to your dog’s shedding and outdoor activity, but keep the sequence consistent:
Best Value
- WATERPROOF - This premium protector prevents almost all types of moisture and liquids from leaking through. Perfect for those with dogs and cats!
- APPLICATION -Suitable for all types of furnitures, especially for sofa and bed.The super soft and luxurious blanket can surely make you share happy time with your pet
- TWO LOOKS IN ONE - Ameritex waterproof furniture cover is reversible and provide two colors to match your furniture
- MACHINE WASHABLE - Easy to clean. Machine wash cold and tumble dry low
- Inspect the seat, arms, back, and chaise for exposed upholstery or shifted fabric.
- Remove visible loose hair with the method that suits the cover: lint roller, vacuum, or brush.
- Lift off dried dirt rather than rubbing it deeper into the weave.
- Check for snags, pulled threads, or holes caused by claws.
- Wash and dry the protector according to its own care label.
- Refit the clean, dry cover and check that the intended areas are still covered.
This routine separates three different jobs: hair removal between washes, laundering the removable layer, and inspecting for wear. Treating them as separate checks makes it easier to notice when a cover is no longer providing the coverage you bought it for.
Diagnose common cover problems
The cover keeps moving
Recheck the measurements and whether the cover is intended for your sofa’s shape. CouchCare attributes stability to weight, drape, and correct sizing, not adhesive or rubber backing, and notes that some movement is normal on leather. Smooth the cover after use and consider whether a different construction or fuller coverage better matches the upholstery.
Hair remains after washing
Remove loose hair before laundering with a lint roller, vacuum, or brush, as CouchCare recommends. Confirm that the cover completed the wash and dry cycle specified on its label. If hair is concentrated in seams or folds, work those areas separately before the next wash.

Review the product’s liquid claim. A cover that is washable but not waterproof can allow liquid to soak through, so it should not be treated as an accident barrier. Choose a protector with an explicitly stated liquid-protection specification if that is a core requirement.
The cover is snagging
Inspect whether the dog is scratching or digging. CouchCare warns that its woven protector is not snag-proof, so repeated clawing can damage the cover itself. Redirect digging and replace a compromised cover before relying on it to protect the upholstery.
Use customer figures in the right context
CouchCare publishes the following customer-reported results for its product. The cited page does not state the year, survey method, or field dates, so these figures should be read as manufacturer-published customer results rather than independent or representative statistics.
| Customer-reported outcome | Figure published by CouchCare |
|---|---|
| Customers who said their old couch looked brand new | 94% |
| Customers who said they cancelled plans to buy new furniture | 89% |
| Customers who said it was easier to keep their couch clean | 92% |
Those numbers may help explain why a removable protector is appealing, but they do not establish performance for every sofa, dog, fabric, or household. Your decision should rest on the cover’s stated construction, dimensions, care instructions, and protection claims.

Before ordering, confirm each point:
- Fit: You measured the seat width between the arms and checked the product’s own sizing guide.
- Configuration: The cover matches a sofa, chaise, or sectional rather than assuming all layouts are interchangeable.
- Coverage: The back, arms, sides, and other dog-used areas are included when needed.
- Cleaning: The cover is machine washable if that is important to your routine, and its care label is clear.
- Grip: The construction and your upholstery surface are compatible with expected movement.
- Liquid claim: You identified whether the product is washable, water-resistant, or explicitly waterproof.
- Claw claim: You are treating the fabric as a sacrificial layer, not assuming claw-proof performance.
For most dog households, the central choice is a correctly sized, washable protector that covers the places the dog actually uses. Hair can then be removed between washes, dirt can be taken off with the cover, and the upholstery has a replaceable layer in front of it. The limits are equally important: fit must be checked, liquids may still pass through, and digging can wear through the protector.
