How to Protect Your Pet’s Privacy When Using AI Apps

Before sharing pet records, photos, or conversations with an AI app, check where each feature sends data, who receives it, how long it stays, and how deletion works.

Protect your pet’s privacy by checking what an AI app collects, where each feature processes information, who receives it, whether it is retained or used for model training, and how deletion works. Share only what the feature needs, grant device permissions only when necessary, and treat any connected assistant as a separate service with its own data practices.

Why a pet app can reveal more than information about your pet

A pet profile may seem harmless, but an AI pet-care app can handle veterinary records, symptoms, photos, video, voice recordings, location-linked activity, and conversations. Some details can also reveal information about the people and routines in the household. A photo may show a home interior; a conversation may include an owner’s name or contact details; a record may contain information about who provided care. Whether any of that is collected, sent off-device, or kept depends on the app and the feature you use.

There is no single privacy rule that applies to every part of an app. Chat, document scanning, image analysis, voice, video, reminders, analytics, and crash reporting may follow different data flows. An app’s general description or a “privacy-first” label does not answer what happens to each file or prompt.

The practical goal is not to avoid every AI feature. It is to decide what information is necessary for the feature you want, understand where it goes, and avoid sharing identifiable or extensive records when a narrower question would do. Privacy checks also do not establish that an AI answer is clinically accurate; a veterinarian remains the right person for urgent or consequential health decisions.

Review an app before sharing a record

Read the current privacy policy and check the app’s settings before adding sensitive information. Look for direct answers to the questions below. If a policy is vague about a point that matters to you, do not upload identifiable records until you have a clear answer from the provider.

What information is required, and what is optional?

Separate account details from pet details. Find out which fields are needed to create an account and which are optional profile information. Then consider whether the feature needs an entire veterinary history or only a limited detail. For example, if you are asking about a single symptom, ask whether a concise description without your name, address, or full record can answer the question.

Do not assume that information is optional merely because the app lets you skip a field. Check whether the app says that a feature depends on it, and avoid entering details that are irrelevant to the task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens for each feature?

Check data handling separately for every feature you plan to use. A privacy statement about one kind of processing does not establish how another works. Review chat prompts, document scans, photos, voice sessions, video, transcriptions, reminders, connected assistants, analytics, and crash reporting individually where the policy distinguishes them.

For each feature, try to identify what is collected, whether it stays on the device or is sent elsewhere, who processes it, and how long the information remains. If the policy names an AI or analytics provider, note whether that provider processes data under the app’s instructions or through a separate account relationship.

Are training, retention, and deletion explained separately?

These are three different questions. Training asks whether your data is used to improve or train an AI model. Retention asks how long prompts, uploads, records, and related data are kept. Deletion asks what is removed when you erase content or close an account—and whether deletion also reaches backups, diagnostics, generated summaries, and data held by service providers.

A promise not to train on your data does not by itself say how long it is stored. A deletion control does not necessarily mean every copy held by a third party or in a backup is immediately erased. Look for the scope and exceptions, not just a broad privacy assurance.

Compare processing claims by feature, not by slogan

“On-device” can describe one feature without describing the whole app. The examples below are statements made by the named services in their policies or product explanations; they are not independent technical audits. Policies and features may change, so check the current version before relying on a claim.

Service What its stated data flow illustrates What to keep in mind
Como AI It says Live Vision camera frames are processed on-device, while voice AI is streamed to processing infrastructure. Local camera processing does not mean voice sessions are local. Assess each feature separately.
Companion It says account records sync to its servers. Audio used for an update is transcribed on-device and deleted after transcription or cancellation; its policy also states diagnostic retention periods. On-device transcription and server-synced account records can coexist in one app. Consult the policy for the diagnostic periods and other feature flows.
attune It says pet profiles, medical records, walks, and chat history remain on the phone; selected AI requests go to Anthropic through its backend. It says HealthKit data is not sent to its servers, Anthropic, or another third party. Some information may remain local while selected requests leave the device. These are the company’s policy claims, not an independent audit.
Kovan It says uploaded veterinary documents are sent to the OpenAI API for extraction and that document images are stored on EU-based servers. A document upload can involve an external AI API and server storage even when the app’s description emphasizes convenience or privacy.
Petto Health It says records read by a connected assistant become part of the user’s conversation with that assistant and are governed by the assistant provider’s policy. Data shared with an assistant may leave the app’s control; Petto says it cannot retrieve or delete that material from the assistant.

These examples show why it is useful to ask what happens to a particular image, recording, record, or prompt rather than asking only whether an app is “local” or “cloud-based.” A feature can process one input on-device and send another to a backend or outside provider.

Use a connected assistant only with a clear boundary

Connecting an assistant can make records easier to query, but it creates a separate privacy relationship. Before authorizing it, identify the exact records and actions it can access, the provider that receives them, and what that provider says it retains. Check whether disconnecting the assistant stops future access only, or also affects content already placed in conversation history.

Petto Health says records read by a connected assistant become part of the conversation with that assistant and are handled under the assistant provider’s policy. It also says it cannot retrieve or delete that material there. That is a concrete reason not to assume that deleting a record from the pet app will erase copies or conversation content held by a connected service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Connect only the assistant you intend to use, and grant the narrowest available access.
  • Review what it can read or do before approving the connection; do not grant broad access merely for convenience.
  • Check the assistant provider’s retention and deletion controls as well as the pet app’s controls.
  • After disconnecting, check the assistant’s own conversation history and data settings separately.

Limit device permissions and unnecessary sharing

Camera, microphone, photo-library, location, and notification permissions should match the feature you are using. An app may need camera access for live vision or microphone access for a voice session, but that does not mean it needs continuing access when you are not using that feature. Grant access only when needed and revoke it in your device settings when it is no longer useful. The exact menu labels vary by device and operating-system version.

Before uploading, consider whether you can remove unnecessary identifiers or use a smaller amount of information. A cropped image may avoid showing household details; a short description may be enough for a general question; a relevant excerpt may be preferable to a complete medical file. These choices reduce what you disclose, but they do not replace checking the app’s policy: even a limited prompt may be transmitted or retained.

Notifications can expose information on a lock screen, and location access may reveal more than a pet-care task requires. Decide whether each permission is essential to the feature’s value to you. If the app does not clearly explain why it needs a permission, leave it off until you understand the reason.

Make deletion a specific check, not an assumption

Before relying on a delete button, find out what it covers. A thorough answer should distinguish account data from individual records, prompts, uploaded files, generated summaries, diagnostics, backups, and data already sent to an AI provider. Check whether deletion is immediate or subject to a stated period, and whether the policy describes legal-retention exceptions.

Como AI, for example, says account-data deletion occurs within 30 days, subject to legal-retention exceptions. That is the company’s stated timeframe for account data; it should not be treated as a universal deletion period for other apps or every data category. Companion states diagnostic retention periods in its policy, while its account records sync to its servers. Check the applicable current policy for the exact scope and timeframe before deciding what to upload.

  1. Find the in-app controls for deleting a pet record, an upload, a conversation, or the account, as applicable.
  2. Read the policy for the stated deletion scope, timing, and exceptions, including backups and diagnostics.
  3. Identify outside AI or assistant providers that received the information and review their separate deletion controls.
  4. After using a deletion control, confirm what the app says was removed and whether any separate provider action is required.

What different providers say about AI use

Published privacy statements offer useful details, but they are provider claims rather than independent security assessments. Compare the specific promise to the data category and feature you care about.

  • Amii says it does not use user records, recordings, documents, or messages to train AI models. It describes answers citing records, refusals when records do not answer a question, and escalation to a veterinarian when uncertain about symptoms. Those described safeguards do not replace veterinary care or establish the accuracy of every answer.
  • Voyage says its AI features rely on third-party AI providers and require explicit consent before AI processing. The company characterizes pet information as not human health information and not HIPAA-protected health information; that is Voyage’s statement, not a general legal conclusion about every app, user, or jurisdiction.
  • Vetalio says AI processing is based on separate explicit consent and describes EU storage, account data, and health-record fields. Check its current policy for the exact categories and controls that apply to the feature you use.
  • Kovan describes sending uploaded veterinary documents to the OpenAI API for extraction and storing document images on EU-based servers. Those details are policy statements and may change.

Do not infer that consent to one AI feature covers all processing, or that a no-training statement means no external processing. Confirm what consent covers and whether you can use other app functions without enabling AI processing.

A practical privacy review before first use

  1. Start with the task. Decide what you want the app to do, such as organize a record or answer a question. Do not upload a full history before you know what information that task needs.
  2. Check account and pet fields. Separate required account details from optional pet profile and health information. Leave optional fields blank unless they serve a purpose you value.
  3. Trace each data flow. For the specific feature, find out whether prompts, photos, voice, video, documents, or records stay on-device or are sent to the app’s servers or named providers.
  4. Read the distinct policy answers. Look for model-training use, retention, deletion scope, backups, analytics, diagnostics, and third-party recipients. Do not treat one answer as a substitute for another.
  5. Set permissions narrowly. Allow camera, microphone, photos, location, or notifications only where needed. Revoke access later if the feature is no longer useful.
  6. Set limits on integrations. If you connect an assistant, check its exact access, the provider’s terms, and what happens to existing conversations if you disconnect.
  7. Decide what not to send. Omit identifiers, unrelated history, and household details where they are not needed. If the policy leaves a material question unanswered, hold back identifiable uploads.
  8. Review deletion controls early. Know how to remove content and close an account before you accumulate records you may later want deleted.

When the policy does not answer your question

Policies can be incomplete, feature-specific, or changed over time. If you cannot tell whether a sensitive upload is used for training, how long it is retained, or which provider receives it, ask the app provider for a direct answer before uploading. Until then, use a less identifying question or avoid sharing the record.

The Federal Trade Commission’s general guidance for app developers recommends minimizing data collection, limiting access and permissions, considering authentication and security, and deleting information when it is no longer needed for a legitimate business purpose. The FTC puts the logic plainly: “If you don’t collect data in the first place, you don’t have to go to the effort of securing it.” This is general guidance for app developers, not a certification of any pet app or a guarantee about a specific provider’s practices.
