Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore adopting, ask what is known about the cat’s history, health, behavior, and daily needs—and how that information was gathered. Then confirm that the cat fits your household, what the adoption agreement includes, and what care or costs will be yours. A brief meeting can help you connect, but it cannot predict exactly how a cat will behave at home.
Start by asking what is known—and what is not
A short profile or friendly interaction is only one piece of information. Ask the café or rescue to distinguish confirmed records and repeated observations from estimates, assumptions, and unanswered questions. Uncertainty is not automatically a reason to walk away; it matters that you understand it before making a commitment.

Questions about the cat’s history
- When and how did the cat enter your care?
- Has the cat lived in a home or foster setting? If so, for how long, and what did the caregiver observe?
- Did a previous caregiver provide information? What did they say about the cat’s routine, health, or behavior?
- Why was the cat surrendered, if that is known?
- Which parts of the history are uncertain or unavailable?
For a cat found outdoors, ask how the organization checked whether the cat had an owner. Find out how long the cat was known in the area, whether neighbors or local caregivers were feeding it, and what steps were taken to identify a caregiver. International Cat Care’s homing guidance treats these as relevant questions for stray cats. A cat’s approachability alone does not establish that it was ownerless or that it will be comfortable living indoors.

Ask to review the veterinary information the organization has, rather than relying only on a verbal summary. Check whether it includes examination findings, known diagnoses, medications, vaccinations, and parasite-prevention history. Ask what a veterinarian recommends next and whether the cat has any scheduled follow-up.

Clarify what is complete and what remains
- Which veterinary services have already been provided, and on what dates?
- Does the cat have a known condition or take medication? If so, what is the care routine?
- Are any tests, treatments, or follow-up visits recommended?
- Has the cat been spayed or neutered? If not, who is responsible for arranging it, and what is the plan?
- Which preventive-care decisions should I discuss with my veterinarian?
Ask for copies of the available records and make sure you understand any medication instructions before pickup. Veterinary recommendations depend on the individual cat’s age and health, so do not treat a generic schedule as a substitute for a veterinarian’s advice. The ASPCA describes spay/neuter before adoption as an important shelter practice, while recognizing that an organization may need an alternative plan when providing the service would otherwise delay placement. Confirm the actual arrangement for this cat, along with any local requirements.
How do you know what the cat is like?
Ask for specific examples of observed behavior, not just a label such as “friendly,” “shy,” or “good with kids.” Find out who saw the behavior, in what setting, how often, and whether the cat was given time to settle. A foster caregiver may have observed a cat in a home, while a café or shelter interaction happens in a different environment; neither observation guarantees how the cat will respond after adoption.
Ask about situations your home will include
- How does the cat respond to unfamiliar people and ordinary handling?
- Has anyone observed grooming or giving medication? What happened?
- How has the cat responded to other cats, dogs, or children, and what was the setting?
- What happens around noise, visitors, or changes in routine?
- Which of these situations has not been tested?
Ask whether a behavior report comes from repeated observations or one brief encounter. A single café visit is especially limited: the cat is meeting you in a particular setting, and the visit cannot establish how it will behave in a new home. International Cat Care cautions that apparent friendliness can be overstated. For example, accepting touch while eating does not by itself show that a cat is comfortable with people. The ASPCA also notes that animals can experience stress in shelters and that behavior decisions should draw on multiple sources of information.

When the answer is “we don’t know,” ask what the caregiver has seen instead and what would be a sensible way to proceed. This gives you a more useful picture than treating an untested situation as proof that the cat will—or will not—adapt.
What routine and environment does the cat need?
Ask about the cat’s everyday habits so you can prepare a realistic transition. Useful details include known litter habits, food, activity level, hiding, scratching, and preferred resting places. Ask whether the cat has lived indoors and what the current caregiver recommends for moving into your home.
If the cat was found outdoors, ask what is known about its life in that area and whether anyone can help clarify its history. A cat that seeks human attention may still have a caregiver, and an outdoor cat may not be prepared for indoor life. The ASPCA cautions that friendliness alone does not settle either question. Consider the cat’s known circumstances and the organization’s observations rather than assuming that an outdoor encounter tells the whole story.

Will this cat fit my household?
Describe your home honestly before asking whether the cat is a match. Mention existing pets, children, how many hours the home is usually empty, noise, available space, and your experience with cats. Ask what information supports the proposed match and where uncertainty remains. A responsible discussion should make room for both a promising fit and the limits of what anyone can predict.

If you have other pets, ask for an introduction plan and follow it patiently. The ASPCA advises giving a new pet time and space and not forcing interactions with people or other animals during the initial adjustment period. A cat’s prior experience with another animal, if known, can inform your plan, but it is not a guarantee of how introductions in your home will go.
What are the adoption terms, fee, and support?
Ask the specific organization how its process works. Café and rescue policies are not necessarily the same, and fees or included services vary. Before agreeing, request the written terms and read them rather than assuming a customary policy applies.

Confirm the practical details in writing
- What does the adoption fee cover, and what services or expenses are not included?
- Which medical records will be provided?
- Will you receive microchip information or documents needed to transfer ownership, if applicable?
- Who should you contact with health or behavior questions after adoption?
- What are the organization’s return, trial, or follow-up policies?
- Are there any remaining veterinary responsibilities, including spay/neuter?
The ASPCA notes that organizations set their own processes and fees; fees may help support veterinary care, spay/neuter, vaccinations, and food. That general explanation does not tell you what a particular fee pays for. Ask for the organization’s actual terms, the records you will receive, and a clear account of any care left for you to arrange.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two cats or adoption organizations
There is no universal score that can tell you which cat is right for your home. Instead, compare the same practical questions for each option and note both the evidence and what remains uncertain.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Health and follow-up | What records are available? What care, medication, or follow-up is recommended, and who will arrange it? |
| Behavior information | Who observed the cat, in what setting, and how often? Which relevant situations remain untested? |
| Household fit | How do the cat’s known routine and observed behavior relate to your pets, children, schedule, noise, and space? |
| History and availability | What is known about how the cat came into care? If found outdoors, how was a possible owner or caregiver sought? |
| Terms and support | What is included in the fee, which documents will you receive, and what help or policies apply after adoption? |
Use the answers to identify what you can responsibly provide and what you still need clarified. A more detailed history or a home-based observation can add useful context, but neither removes all uncertainty. If an important answer is missing, ask whether the organization can check before you decide.

Prepare for pickup and the first days at home
Before adoption day, set up a quiet safe space and gather basic supplies. ASPCA’s preparation guidance includes a litter box, food and water bowls, a scratching post, and toys. Ask the caregiver what food and routine the cat currently has so you can plan the transition with their guidance.
- Arrange safe transport. Bring a secure cat carrier and keep the cat contained until you are in a safe environment. International Cat Care discusses carrier use and the importance of keeping a cat secure during the move.
- Make a calm landing place. Set up the cat’s essentials in a quiet area where it can rest and settle without being pushed into contact with people or other pets.
- Plan veterinary care. Arrange a veterinary appointment soon after adoption to review the records, discuss the cat’s individual needs, and confirm recommended follow-up.
- Give the cat time. Let the cat adjust at its own pace. Avoid forcing interactions; ask the organization for help if a health or behavior concern arises.
If you are considering pet insurance, the ASPCA suggests researching plans and notes that many have waiting periods and exclude pre-existing conditions. Review the actual policy terms; do not assume a known or suspected condition will be covered.
Questions worth resolving before you say yes
You do not need a perfect biography or a guarantee of future behavior. You do need enough reliable information to understand the cat’s known needs, the limits of the available observations, and the responsibilities you are accepting. Before committing, make sure you can answer these in your own words:
