Puppies and adult dogs can both learn. If fear is severe or getting worse, seek veterinary or qualified behavior support rather than forcing exposure.
How do you teach everyday manners?
Make the behavior you want worthwhile. Rewards can be food, toys, praise, or attention; choose what your dog values. Notice desirable behavior as it happens and reward it so the dog has a reason to offer it again.

Reward the behavior you want
If your dog jumps to greet you, pause the greeting and wait for four paws on the floor before offering attention. This makes calm behavior the route to what the dog wants. Keep your timing clear and consistent across the household.
Prevent unwanted rehearsal
Management is part of training. Put tempting shoes away, use barriers where needed, and set up the space so the dog has access to appropriate activities. Exercise can also support settling and attention, but the right amount and type vary by dog.

What should a puppy learn first?
Start useful household routines soon after your puppy comes home. The goal is not to master everything at once; build predictable, positive practice into daily life.
- Potty habits: establish a routine and reward toileting in the appropriate place.
- Crate comfort: help the puppy become comfortable in the crate through gradual, positive experiences.
- Time alone: introduce brief, manageable periods apart and build gradually.
- Appropriate chewing: provide suitable chew options and manage access to household items.
- Gentle mouth use: help the puppy learn to use its mouth gently; bite inhibition develops over time.
A qualified puppy class can provide instruction and support. Choose an instructor who uses positive reinforcement, and look for a setting where puppies and people are not visibly stressed.

How do you socialize a puppy or adult dog?
Socialization means helping a dog form positive associations with sights, sounds, smells, people, places, and situations. It is not a matter of taking a dog everywhere or making it endure frightening encounters. Keep new experiences manageable and pair them with rewards or praise.
For puppies, ask when public outings are safe
Before taking a puppy into public places or arranging contact with unfamiliar dogs, ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for the puppy’s vaccination status and local disease risks. The safe timing and settings are not the same for every puppy or location.

Let a hesitant dog set the pace
If a dog seems unsure, increase distance, allow it to observe, or let it move away. A frightened puppy pushed into an experience may form a stronger negative association. Adult dogs can also learn about new situations through gradual, supervised exposure and positive experiences.
For severe fearfulness, ask a veterinarian or qualified animal-behavior professional for help. More exposure is not automatically better when a dog is distressed.

How can you keep play safe and enjoyable?
Supervise dog play actively, especially when a puppy is involved. Do not assume dogs will always manage an interaction safely on their own. Keep puppy sessions short, avoid pressuring a shy dog to join, and interrupt or change an interaction if a dog appears uncomfortable.

- Watch for trembling, hiding, or other fearful body language.
- Give a dog room to pause or leave rather than forcing continued interaction.
- Remove the puppy from play if it feels unsafe or uncomfortable.
- Be cautious about introducing an inexperienced puppy to an unfamiliar dog that could overwhelm it.
How do you choose a puppy class?
Ask whether you can observe a session before enrolling. Consider the instructor’s qualifications and methods, the group size and how dogs are matched, the noise and surfaces, and whether dogs and owners appear stressed. Look for active supervision and opportunities for a puppy to pause or opt out. No single class format is established as best for every puppy.
