Choose a challenge, agree the appeal details with the animal charity, and explain clearly how sponsorship will be collected and passed on. Before asking for donations, tell supporters what the money is for, what happens if you cannot finish, and whether fees or expenses will be deducted. This guidance focuses on public advice and tax rules for England and Wales; check local requirements elsewhere in the UK or abroad.
1. Choose a charity and a challenge
Pick an activity you can describe simply—a sponsored walk, run or another achievable challenge—and confirm that the charity accepts fundraising for your intended purpose. If you want donations restricted to a particular project, check with the charity before you advertise it.
Be precise about your relationship to the charity. If you are organising the activity independently, say you are fundraising “in aid of” the named charity and make clear that you are acting in a personal capacity. Raising money in aid of a charity does not by itself mean the charity organised or is responsible for your event. If the charity has asked you to fundraise, follow its instructions and applicable fundraising requirements. The Charity Commission’s guidance for England and Wales explains relevant responsibilities.
2. Ask the charity how to fundraise for it
Contact the charity before making posters, sponsorship forms or an online page. Ask about approved wording, logo use, donation routes, forms, event rules and any restrictions on how funds may be used. Do not imply endorsement or reproduce a logo without permission.

- The RSPCA fundraising guidance offers fundraising resources and suggests setting up a JustGiving page for a sponsored challenge. Check its current materials and event options directly.
- Dogs Trust fundraising guidance includes sponsored walks and runs among its ideas. It advises people planning a sponsored dog walk to contact its fundraising team and provides a fundraising pack.
These are examples, not endorsements of a particular charity or platform. If you are supporting another animal charity, ask it for its own current instructions.

3. Make the appeal clear before collecting sponsorship
A donor should be able to understand what they are supporting and what will happen to their money. Include the following in your appeal:
- The charity’s name and, if registered, its charity number.
- Whether funds support the charity generally or a specific purpose approved by the charity.
- Your challenge, any fundraising target and deadline, if you have set them.
- What you will do with donations if you cannot complete the challenge.
- Any platform fees, optional tips or reasonable expenses that will be deducted, and how these affect the amount the charity receives.
- How donations will reach the charity and how supporters can contact you with questions.
Be honest about the likely costs and outcome. Do not promise a particular impact or imply that every pound donated will go directly to animal care unless you can substantiate that statement.

4. Pick a donation route that fits your event
You can collect sponsorship using a charity-approved form or an online fundraising page. Some charity-linked pages route donations to the charity; Dogs Trust, for example, says money from a linked online page is transferred directly to it. Confirm the current process with the charity and read the platform’s terms before sharing a page. Explain any costs, tips or deductions to donors.

There is no universally best platform or event arrangement; compare the current terms and choose one you can explain plainly to supporters. The Fundraising Regulator’s challenge-event guidance sets out points to consider.
5. Understand Gift Aid on sponsorship
Do not assume that all sponsorship can be Gift Aided or claim pooled sponsorship as your own donation. Under HMRC’s sponsored-challenge guidance, the money raised belongs to the charity, not to the participant. Each sponsor who wants to Gift Aid an eligible donation must make their own valid declaration, and the usual Gift Aid rules—including rules about benefits—still apply.
A registration or deposit fee for taking part in a sponsored event is not eligible for Gift Aid. A benefit connected to the event can also affect eligibility. In particular, sponsorship from a person connected to the participant, such as a close family member, usually does not qualify where the participant receives an event benefit, unless the participant pays the full cost of the trip or event. The details depend on the arrangements, so check HMRC’s guidance and ask the charity if you are unsure; this is not individual tax advice.
