You cannot stop a healthy dog from shedding normally, but you can collect much of the loose hair before it lands on floors, furniture, and clothing. The most effective approach is a coat-appropriate brushing routine, occasional baths with dog-formulated shampoo, and gentle handling that does not damage the skin or pull painfully on the coat.

Brush frequency, brush type, and bath timing are individual decisions. A short-coated dog may do well with a grooming glove or bristle brush, while a long or dense coat may need a slicker brush or undercoat rake. Some dogs need brushing several times a week; others need daily attention, particularly when their coat is releasing more loose hair. Bathing can lift additional loose hair, but bathing too often can remove protective oils and leave the skin dry.

What brushing and bathing can—and cannot—do

Shedding is a normal part of a dog’s coat cycle. Grooming controls where loose hair goes; it does not switch off normal hair growth and release. The ASPCA explains: “While you cannot stop a healthy dog from normal shedding, you can reduce the amount of hair in your home by brushing your dog regularly.”

Brushing gathers hairs that are already loose, spreads natural oils through the coat, and gives you a chance to find tangles or skin changes early. It is not a treatment for disease-related hair loss. A bath can wash away loosened hair and dirt, but it is not a substitute for brushing and should not be scheduled simply because more bathing seems likely to mean less shedding.

There is no reliable percentage reduction that applies to every dog. Coat structure, length, density, season, health, and the dog’s tolerance all change the result. Judge the routine by whether loose hair is being collected comfortably and whether the skin and coat remain healthy.

Match the tool to the coat

The right brush removes loose hair without scraping skin or repeatedly snagging healthy coat. Coat length and density are the starting points, but the dog’s individual texture and tolerance matter just as much. If you are unsure which tool fits your dog, ask a veterinarian or an experienced groomer for an examination-based recommendation; both the American Kennel Club’s home-grooming guidance and the ASPCA’s grooming guidance emphasize adapting equipment to the dog.

Coat situation Tools commonly considered What to watch for
Short, close coat Soft bristle brush or grooming glove Use enough contact to collect loose hair without rubbing the skin raw; a glove may be easier for a dog that dislikes a rigid brush.
Long coat Slicker brush, with other tools selected for the individual coat Work in small sections so you do not leave tangles underneath the visible top layer.
Dense or double coat Slicker brush and/or undercoat rake used with light pressure Concentrate on areas where loose undercoat accumulates, while stopping if the tool catches or the dog shows discomfort.
Uncertain texture, sensitive skin, or mixed coat Begin with the gentlest suitable tool and obtain professional advice A tool that works for one breed or dog can be wrong for another; skin condition and coat density may require a different plan.

A grooming glove and an undercoat rake are not competing versions of a single “best” brush. They address different coats and different kinds of loose hair. The useful comparison is whether a tool reaches the loose hair in your dog’s coat, removes it with light pressure, and is tolerated calmly.

How often should you brush your dog?

There is no universal calendar. The AKC describes schedules ranging from several times per week to daily grooming, depending on coat and the individual dog. Dogs with longer or denser coats generally need more frequent attention to prevent loose hair and tangles from building up, while many short coats can be maintained with less frequent sessions.

Use your dog’s coat and response to set the interval:

  • Increase frequency when you are finding more loose hair, the undercoat is packing together, or small tangles are appearing between sessions.
  • Keep sessions shorter but regular if the dog becomes restless; a calm five-minute session repeated more often is safer than one long, forceful session.
  • Reduce pressure, not necessarily frequency, if the dog has sensitive skin. A veterinarian can help distinguish sensitivity from a skin problem.
  • During heavier shedding, some dogs need more frequent brushing than they do at other times. Increase gradually and stop if the coat or skin becomes irritated.

Do not interpret a large amount of hair in one session as proof that you should brush harder. A longer gap may simply have allowed more loose hair to accumulate. The goal is consistent collection, not removal of firmly attached hair.

A gentle brushing method

  1. Choose a quiet location. Put the dog on a secure, comfortable surface and have treats available. Avoid beginning when the dog is already excited, tired, or trying to escape.
  2. Let the dog inspect the tool. Hold the brush nearby, reward calm behavior, and touch the coat briefly before making repeated strokes.
  3. Start where the dog is comfortable. Many dogs accept the shoulder or side more readily than feet, tail, ears, or belly. Begin in an easy area and expand only while the dog remains relaxed.
  4. Use short, light strokes. Follow the direction of the coat. On a dense coat, work in small sections and lift the hair so you can reach loose undercoat without dragging the tool across skin.
  5. Check the brush frequently. Remove collected hair so the tool continues to contact the coat evenly. Do not force a brush through a snag.
  6. Handle tangles carefully. Separate a small tangle with your fingers if possible, keep the hair close to the skin for support, and use minimal strokes. Painful pulling can make future grooming more difficult.
  7. End before tolerance runs out. Reward calm cooperation, then stop. Several successful sessions build a better habit than one session that ends in restraint or a struggle.

Never use brushing to “test” how much hair you can remove. If the dog flinches, repeatedly turns to stop you, growls, or tries to flee, pause and change the approach rather than increasing pressure.

When a dog dislikes brushing

Resistance can come from a painful mat, a brush that scratches, pressure on an injured area, or simply unfamiliar handling. The AKC recommends gradual introduction: show the brush, reward calm behavior, touch briefly, and build duration in small steps.

A low-stress introduction

  1. Place the brush on the floor at a distance where the dog remains relaxed, and reward looking at it calmly.
  2. Move it closer over several repetitions, then reward a calm sniff.
  3. Touch the coat with the back of the brush before using the bristles, rewarding stillness.
  4. Make one gentle stroke in a comfortable area, reward, and stop if the dog tenses.
  5. Add strokes and new body areas only after the earlier step is easy.

If the dog’s reaction is sudden, intense, or focused on one body area, arrange a veterinary examination rather than assuming the behavior is purely training-related. A professional groomer can also demonstrate safer handling for a difficult coat.

How often should you bathe your dog?

Bathing should follow the dog’s coat, activity, skin health, and actual need for cleaning—not a single interval that applies to every breed. Many dogs need only occasional baths. The AKC notes that bathing needs vary, and the VCA explains that overbathing can strip natural oils and dry the coat.

Consider a bath when dirt, odor, or a coat problem makes cleaning appropriate, or when your veterinarian has included bathing in a skin-care plan. Do not bathe solely to chase normal shedding. A bath can loosen and rinse out hair that brushing has already released, but frequent unnecessary washing may leave the skin dry and the coat dull or brittle.

Before bathing

  • Brush out loose hair and manageable tangles first. Water can tighten some tangles, making them harder and more painful to remove.
  • Gather a dog-formulated shampoo, towels, a nonslip surface, and a way to control water flow before bringing the dog into the bathing area.
  • Use warm or lukewarm water, not water that feels hot to your hand.
  • If the dog has allergies, very sensitive skin, or needs frequent therapeutic baths, ask the veterinarian which product and schedule are appropriate.

Bathing steps

  1. Wet the coat thoroughly. Work methodically so water reaches the coat rather than only the surface, while avoiding forceful spray directly into the face or ears.
  2. Apply a mild shampoo made for dogs. Follow the product directions and use enough to clean the coat without vigorous scrubbing.
  3. Massage gently. Use your fingertips rather than nails. Keep the dog calm and watch for signs that the product stings or the skin is already irritated.
  4. Rinse completely. Residue left in the coat can irritate skin. Continue rinsing until the water runs clear and the coat no longer feels slippery from product.
  5. Dry safely. Towel-dry without aggressive rubbing that can tangle a long coat. Keep the dog warm and supervised until the coat is dry.
  6. Recheck the skin and coat. Look for redness, sores, worsening itch, or areas that remain matted. Those findings call for professional advice rather than another home bath.

Should you use a shedding-control shampoo?

A shampoo marketed to help release loose hair may be an optional aid during bathing. The AKC says these products do not stop normal shedding; at most, they can help loosen or remove hair that is ready to come out. They should not be used to explain away sudden hair loss or to replace brushing.

Choose a product formulated for dogs and rinse it thoroughly. Human shampoos and heavily fragranced products can be unsuitable for canine skin. For a dog with allergies, recurrent irritation, or a veterinarian-diagnosed skin condition, product selection should come from the treating veterinarian rather than from a shedding label.

Mats, knots, and dense undercoats

Loose hair trapped in a long or dense coat can form mats. A small, superficial tangle may be loosened gently with fingers and an appropriate brush, but do not keep pulling when the dog is uncomfortable or the mat is tight against the skin.

Extensive mats can hide inflamed or damaged skin. The VCA advises professional help for serious coat problems. Arrange a qualified groomer or veterinary evaluation when mats are extensive, the skin beneath them looks irritated, or you cannot separate the hair without pain. Do not use scissors or clippers close to an unseen skin surface at home; a mat can pull skin up into the cutting path.

Recognize normal shedding versus a possible health problem

Normal shedding usually produces loose hair while the overall coat and skin remain intact. Seek veterinary advice for a change that does not fit your dog’s usual pattern, including:

  • sudden or unusually heavy hair loss;
  • bald, sharply thinning, or asymmetrical patches;
  • redness, sores, scabs, or a strong change in skin odor;
  • persistent itching, licking, chewing, or rubbing;
  • pain when a previously tolerated area is brushed; or
  • hair loss that continues despite a sensible grooming routine.

The AKC and ASPCA distinguish routine coat turnover from signs that may need medical assessment. A shedding-control shampoo or more vigorous brushing cannot diagnose or cure an underlying condition.

A practical routine by coat type

Dog’s coat Brushing plan Bath plan Adjustment signal
Short coat Use a soft bristle brush or grooming glove at a frequency the dog accepts; some dogs need several sessions weekly, while others need less. Occasional, when dirt, odor, coat condition, or veterinary advice makes cleaning appropriate. If loose hair remains on the coat or furniture, make sessions more regular rather than pressing harder.
Long coat Use a suitable slicker brush in small sections; daily grooming may be appropriate for some dogs to prevent tangles. Brush out tangles before bathing and rinse very thoroughly so residue does not remain in the longer hair. New knots, especially near friction areas, indicate that the interval or technique needs adjustment.
Dense or double coat Use a slicker brush or undercoat rake with light pressure to collect loose undercoat; increase attention during heavier shedding periods if the dog remains comfortable. Use baths to clean and release already-loose hair, not as a replacement for undercoat brushing. If the tool snags, reduce pressure and work smaller sections; seek advice if the coat is packed or matted.

Key safety checks after every session

  • The dog should be calmer at the end than at the beginning, not forced through escalating distress.
  • The skin should not be scraped, bleeding, or persistently red after brushing.
  • Loose hair should be removed without cutting or tearing attached coat.
  • Bath products should be fully rinsed away.
  • Any sudden change in shedding, skin appearance, or comfort should move the next step from grooming to veterinary advice.

Regular, gentle brushing is the foundation: it captures loose hair before it spreads and keeps you familiar with your dog’s normal coat. Add baths when the dog genuinely needs cleaning, use products made for canine skin, and treat persistent itching, bald areas, sores, or unusual hair loss as health concerns rather than grooming problems.
