A dog’s odd behavior deserves a health check when it is new, persistent, worsening, or clearly different from that dog’s usual pattern. Pain and illness do not always produce crying or an obvious limp. A dog may hide, pace, sleep differently, resist handling, eat less, or become irritable while still greeting people and wagging its tail. These changes are clues rather than a diagnosis, so a veterinarian must assess the possible causes.
Pay particular attention when a behavior change appears with altered movement, posture, appetite, sleep, energy, grooming, urination, defecation, or reactions to touch. Record what you see and arrange veterinary advice rather than assuming the behavior is simply a personality phase or a training problem.

Start with your dog’s normal baseline
The most useful comparison is not between your dog and an imaginary “typical” dog; it is between your dog now and your dog’s established routine. A familiar caregiver may notice small changes that are easy to dismiss individually: taking longer to stand, choosing a different sleeping position, leaving part of a meal, or stopping an activity that was previously routine.

Look for a meaningful departure from that baseline. One unusual moment after a loud noise may resolve quickly. A pattern that returns, intensifies, or interferes with normal function deserves more attention. Note whether the change began suddenly or built gradually, whether it occurs at rest or during movement, and whether handling, stairs, exercise, eating, elimination, or a particular time of day seems to affect it.

Dogs also compensate. They may continue to greet family members, accept treats, or wag their tails despite discomfort. The absence of dramatic crying, a normal-looking posture for part of the day, or a reassuring interaction does not rule pain out.
Behavior patterns that can accompany pain or illness
Movement and posture changes
Observe how your dog gets up, walks, turns, sits, lies down, and uses stairs. Limping, stiffness, reluctance to climb or exercise, sitting or lying down more often, an arched back, a lowered head, or an unusual tail position can indicate that movement is uncomfortable. A dog may take shorter steps, avoid jumping onto furniture, or repeatedly change position instead of settling.
Describe the exact activity that changed. “Doesn’t want to walk” is less informative than “stops after five minutes, turns toward home, and is stiff when rising afterward.” Do not force a movement to test it; an unwilling or painful dog can react defensively.

Pacing, restlessness, or an inability to get comfortable can be as significant as unusual lethargy. Some dogs circle, stand, lie down, and get up repeatedly. Others withdraw, stop playing, or sleep much more than usual. A sudden drop in exercise or interaction is important even when the dog is not vocalizing.
Record when the dog can or cannot settle. Restlessness during the night, after meals, or when attempting to lie down gives a veterinarian useful context, as does a clear difference between behavior after activity and behavior after a long rest.

Social behavior and mood
A dog in discomfort may hide, avoid interaction, become unusually clingy, or react differently to familiar people. Irritability, growling, snapping, or an attempt to escape touch can be defensive responses to anticipated pain. A dog that has always enjoyed being held may suddenly resist being lifted or touched around one area.
Illness can also be associated with altered personality, withdrawal, reduced appetite, changed social relationships, or different responses to ordinary sights and sounds. These patterns overlap with fear, stress, and learned behavior, so describe the change without labeling its cause.
Self-directed behavior and facial expression
Repeated licking, chewing, or rubbing of one location may draw attention to a sore or irritated area. Excessive panting while resting, new vocalizing, or a changed facial expression can also accompany discomfort. Compare the behavior with the dog’s usual breathing and expression when the room is quiet and the dog has not just exercised.
A short, naturally occurring video can show a posture, gait, or repeated behavior more accurately than a written description. Never provoke pain to obtain footage.
Daily habits
Changes in appetite, sleep, urination, or defecation belong in the same record as behavior. A dog may eat less, wake repeatedly, sleep unusually deeply, or have new indoor accidents. These signs do not identify a specific problem, but they help a veterinarian judge how broadly the dog’s normal routine has changed.

Use the pattern to communicate, not to self-diagnose
No single behavior proves that pain is the cause. Stress, fear, another medical problem, environmental change, and behavior factors can produce similar signs. The goal of home observation is to give the veterinarian a precise history, not to select a diagnosis from a symptom list.

|---|---|---|
| Onset | Exact day noticed; sudden or gradual change | Shows whether the pattern is an abrupt departure or a developing problem |
| Timing | Morning, night, after eating, after exercise, or continuously | Reveals when the behavior is most likely to occur |
| Context | At rest, during movement, on stairs, during grooming, or when touched | Identifies situations that bring the change on without deliberately provoking it |
| Frequency and duration | How often it happens and how long each episode lasts | Lets the clinician judge whether it is occasional, persistent, or worsening |
| Related routine changes | Eating, drinking, sleep, activity, elimination, and social interaction | Shows whether the change is isolated or part of a wider health pattern |
Compare sudden and gradual onset, and behavior at rest versus during movement or handling, but do not treat those comparisons as a diagnostic test. For example, restlessness only at night and reluctance to climb stairs are both useful facts; neither identifies the underlying condition on its own.
When to contact a veterinarian
Contact a veterinarian when a new behavior change persists, keeps returning, worsens, or is accompanied by altered movement, posture, appetite, sleep, energy, elimination, or sensitivity to touch. Earlier advice is appropriate when normal activities are becoming harder or the dog’s reaction to handling creates a safety concern.
Call the practice and explain what changed, when it began, and whether the dog is eating, drinking, moving, resting, and eliminating normally. The clinic can advise how quickly the dog should be seen. If the dog appears severely distressed or you cannot safely manage the situation, ask an emergency veterinary service for immediate guidance rather than attempting a home examination.
Do not wait for a dog to cry. Dogs can mask discomfort, and a normal greeting or wagging tail cannot exclude pain. Conversely, a single quiet day does not establish that a serious problem is present; the veterinarian interprets the whole pattern.

Prepare a concise record before the visit
A brief log is often more useful than trying to remember several days of events in the examination room. Include observations from other household members so the record reflects the dog’s whole routine.
- Write the baseline. Note the activities, handling, sleeping pattern, appetite, and elimination that were normal before the change.
- Describe the first difference. Record the date or best estimate, what you saw, and whether the onset seemed sudden or gradual.
- Track repetitions. Add the time, duration, frequency, and circumstances of each episode. Mention what happened immediately before and what allowed the dog to settle, if anything.
- Record related changes. Include mobility, posture, food and water intake, sleep, play, grooming, urination, defecation, and responses to touch or being lifted.
- Capture safe video. Film ordinary movement or the behavior at home from a distance. Do not restrain, corner, wake, or manipulate the dog to reproduce a sign.
- List relevant background. Tell the veterinarian about recent injuries, routine changes, medications, previous conditions, and any new fear or stressor.
Signs can be less apparent in a clinic than at home. A dated note and a short video can therefore prevent an important detail from being missed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the veterinary assessment may involve
The veterinarian begins with your history and a physical examination. Your description of onset, context, and associated routine changes helps the clinician decide which parts of the examination deserve particular attention and whether the behavior could be related to pain, another illness, fear, stress, or a combination.
When indicated, the veterinarian may recommend diagnostic tests such as radiographs or blood work. The choice depends on the examination findings and the dog’s history; behavior alone cannot determine which test is appropriate. Ask what each proposed test is intended to clarify and what follow-up will be needed if the result is normal or abnormal.

Merck Veterinary Manual’s guidance on behavior problems states: “When presented with a patient with undesirable behavior, the veterinarian must first exclude any medical problems that might be causing or contributing to the clinical signs.” That principle is why a new behavior change should receive a health assessment before being treated solely as disobedience.

Handle new aggression as both a safety and health issue
Growling, snapping, or biting can occur when a dog anticipates painful handling, but medical and behavioral causes other than pain are also possible. Treat the change as a warning signal, not as proof of bad character or a diagnosis.
- Avoid touching, lifting, restraining, or moving the dog in the way that triggers the reaction.
- Give the dog space and prevent children, visitors, and other animals from approaching closely while you arrange veterinary advice.
- Use barriers, a separate room, or another low-conflict arrangement if needed for immediate safety.
- Do not punish the warning growl or force an interaction. Suppressing the warning can increase the chance of a bite without resolving the underlying problem.
- Tell the veterinary practice in advance that the dog has shown defensive behavior so staff can plan a safer visit.
A training-only response is not an adequate first step for a sudden aggression change. Health causes should be assessed, while behavior support can be added when the veterinarian determines it is appropriate.
Common interpretation mistakes to avoid
Assuming a quirky habit is harmless because it looks familiar
A behavior can resemble a long-standing quirk yet still be concerning if its frequency, intensity, or context has changed. Compare the current version with the dog’s own history rather than relying on its appearance.
Waiting for a dramatic sign
Withdrawal, altered sleep, reduced activity, or sensitivity to touch may precede obvious physical impairment. Waiting for crying or a visible abnormality can delay assessment.
Assigning one cause from one sign
Hiding, panting, appetite loss, accidents, and irritability each have multiple possible explanations. Combining the timeline, context, and related changes gives the veterinarian a more reliable starting point than any isolated sign.
Testing the dog repeatedly
Repeatedly pressing a suspected sore area, making the dog climb, or provoking a reaction can increase discomfort and risk. Observe normal behavior and leave hands-on evaluation to trained professionals.
A practical decision checklist
- Is this behavior genuinely different from the individual dog’s normal pattern?
- Has it persisted, recurred, intensified, or interfered with ordinary movement or rest?
- Did appetite, sleep, energy, grooming, urination, defecation, or social interaction change at the same time?
- Does it appear during movement, at rest, or when the dog expects to be touched or handled?
- Can you describe the onset, frequency, duration, and context without guessing at a diagnosis?
- Can you safely record a short video or written note for the veterinarian?
- Has the dog growled, snapped, or bitten, requiring distance and a safety plan?
If the answers point to a meaningful change, contact a veterinarian and share the record. Careful observation helps the clinician distinguish a transient oddity from a sign that needs medical attention, while recognizing that only an examination and appropriate testing can determine the cause.
