Pain and fear can make even a familiar, normally gentle dog bite. Avoid a forced examination; use only the handling needed to move the dog safely, and do not muzzle a dog with breathing trouble, vomiting, facial injury, unconsciousness, or a need to pant for cooling.
1. Make sure the scene is safe
Before going near the dog, check for traffic, fire, electrical hazards, or other dangers. Do not enter an unsafe area to reach an animal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that “Pain and fear can make animals unpredictable or even dangerous.” Keep your face away from the dog’s mouth, and do not assume a familiar pet is safe to touch while injured.
If the scene is unsafe, or the dog is too distressed for you to approach without risk, call emergency services or animal-control professionals as appropriate and contact a veterinary clinic for guidance.
2. Approach slowly and watch the dog’s response
From a safe distance, speak in a low, calm voice. Move slowly, avoid sudden gestures, and do not crowd, hug, reach over, or grab the dog if you can avoid it. Pain can prompt defensive behavior even in a dog that is usually relaxed.

Pause or back away if the dog shows signs of distress or escalating fear. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine lists tense posture, showing the whites of the eyes, shrinking away, raised hair, hard staring, growling, lunging, and reacting as if painful as signs of discomfort or possible escalation. Do not try to push through these warnings or force an examination; call the veterinary team for instructions.
3. Decide whether a muzzle is safe
A muzzle may reduce bite risk in some situations, but it is not a routine step for every injured dog. Do not muzzle a dog that is struggling to breathe, vomiting, unconscious, has facial trauma, or may need to pant to cool down. A muzzle can obstruct breathing, interfere with vomiting, put pressure on an injured face, or limit cooling. If you are uncertain whether it is safe, ask the veterinarian before trying.

When none of those concerns applies and you can do so without a struggle, a muzzle may be considered to reduce bite risk while handling or transport. Stop if applying it increases distress or interferes with breathing or a comfortable position. Do not delay veterinary care to fit a muzzle.
Basket muzzles allow more airflow than nonbasket styles and can allow drinking and treats in general handling contexts, but that does not make them appropriate for every acute injury or for a dog that is vomiting. For future preparedness, acclimate a dog to a muzzle gradually with rewards in a calm setting; an emergency is not the time to introduce one for the first time.

Use an open-top carrier or a suitable box if possible. Removing the carrier’s top can make it easier to place the dog inside without forcing it through a narrow door. Avoid unnecessary repositioning.

5. Call the veterinary team and arrange transport
Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly. Describe what happened, what you can observe about the dog’s breathing and consciousness, and any visible injury. Follow the team’s instructions, and phone ahead when possible so they can prepare for your arrival. Transport the dog for professional care as soon as possible; first aid is only a bridge to veterinary treatment.
Do not delay the trip to complete a home examination or apply restraint that is unsafe for the dog’s condition. If you cannot handle or move the dog safely, tell the clinic and ask what help is available.
