1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCall local animal control, an emergency veterinary clinic, a shelter, or a rescue first. Ask where the puppy can be assessed or transferred after hours. While you arrange that handoff, keep the puppy contained, quiet, dry, and gently warm, and do not force food or liquid. A puppy with breathing trouble, serious injury, unresponsiveness, seizures, severe weakness, or marked chilling needs emergency veterinary care now—not a wait until the shelter opens.
Start with a local call, not an overnight routine
A found puppy’s age, medical condition, ownership, and need for its mother are unknown. Those facts determine whether it needs emergency treatment, neonatal support, or only short-term shelter. After-hours intake rules also vary by location, so a generic schedule cannot safely replace local instructions.

- An emergency veterinary hospital.
- The municipal or private shelter that normally serves your area.
- A reputable rescue group with puppy or neonatal experience.
Tell the person answering where you found the puppy, when you found it, what it looks like, and whether you see injury, breathing problems, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, or extreme cold. Ask whether the puppy should be brought directly to an emergency clinic, held securely until morning, or taken to a specific after-hours drop-off point. If you cannot reach a shelter, keep calling the emergency veterinary clinic or animal-control line rather than guessing at treatment.

Do not delay urgent veterinary care merely because a shelter is closed. A shelter opening is an administrative event; a serious medical problem is time-sensitive.
Decide whether the puppy can wait or needs emergency care
Use appearance and behavior to triage, not to diagnose. A puppy that seems quiet may be frightened, exhausted, chilled, hypoglycemic, dehydrated, or ill. If you are unsure, describe what you observe to an emergency veterinarian.
| What you observe | Action |
|---|---|
| Breathing difficulty, gasping, blue or gray gums, severe bleeding, major injury, collapse, unresponsiveness, seizures, or inability to stand | Contact an emergency veterinarian immediately and follow its transport instructions. |
| The puppy is markedly cold, limp, unusually weak, or becoming less responsive | Treat this as urgent. Call an emergency veterinarian while providing gentle, gradual warmth as directed; do not wait for morning. |
| Repeated vomiting, profuse diarrhea, or suspected poisoning | Call an emergency veterinary clinic for immediate instructions. Do not give home remedies or force fluids. |
| Alert enough to respond, breathing normally, and with no obvious severe injury | Keep it secure, quiet, dry, and supervised while arranging the earliest professional assessment and handoff. |
VCA Animal Hospitals describes severe hypothermia as life-threatening and advises immediate veterinary contact for emergency instructions. A temperature below 94°F (34.3°C) can be life-threatening, according to VCA’s Caring for Orphaned Puppies. That figure is clinical guidance for veterinary care; it is not a reason to take a rectal temperature or attempt treatment without professional instruction.
Set up a safe overnight holding area
Use a contained, escape-proof space
Place the puppy in a crate, carrier, sturdy box with ventilation, or a small puppy-proofed room. The container should prevent falls and escapes while allowing you to observe breathing and behavior. Keep it away from stairs, traffic, cords, heaters, open windows, pools, toxic substances, and gaps behind furniture.
Use clean, dry bedding that will not entangle a tiny paw. Replace wet or soiled bedding promptly. Keep water bowls shallow and stable if a professional advises that the puppy may drink; never leave a weak puppy struggling to reach a deep bowl.

Separate the puppy from resident animals
Keep the found puppy physically separated from your dogs, cats, and children. A puppy may carry contagious disease, parasites, or an unknown temperament, and resident animals may frighten or injure it. Use separate bedding and bowls, wash your hands after handling, and supervise every interaction. Do not attempt introductions overnight.
Keep the environment calm
Dim the lights, reduce noise, and handle the puppy only when necessary for safety, transport, or the care plan provided by a professional. Avoid bathing a chilled or weak puppy. Dry visible moisture with a towel instead of placing the puppy in a bath.

Young puppies lose heat easily, and VCA identifies hypothermia, dehydration, and low blood sugar as interrelated risks in orphaned puppies. The safest immediate goal is gentle, steady warmth while you obtain professional guidance—not making the puppy hot as quickly as possible.
- Provide dry bedding and block drafts.
- Use a warm, wrapped heat source only if a veterinarian or rescue professional agrees it is appropriate. The puppy must be able to move away from the heat.
- Check frequently for overheating, panting, agitation, or skin that feels excessively hot.
- Never place a heat pad directly against the puppy, use a high setting, or leave an unmonitored hot-water bottle beside it.
VCA advises gradual warming of a hypothermic puppy over 30 to 60 minutes because rapid rewarming can cause serious complications. Follow the emergency clinic’s method and timing if the puppy is cold enough to concern you. Do not improvise an aggressive warming procedure.
Why age-specific temperatures are not a room-temperature recipe
VCA lists normal newborn rectal temperatures of 95°F to 99°F (35°C to 37.2°C) in the first week, 97°F to 100°F (36.1°C to 37.8°C) in weeks two and three, and 100°F to 102°F (37.8°C to 38.9°C) by the fourth week. It gives an environmental range of 85°F to 90°F (29.4°C to 32.2°C) for the first four days, declining as puppies mature.

Those figures apply to known-age neonatal care under veterinary guidance. They are not universal instructions for an age-unknown puppy found outdoors. Do not heat an older puppy as though it were a newborn, and do not assume that a warm-feeling puppy is medically stable.

Estimate age only enough to guide the call
Do not assign an exact age from size, breed appearance, or teeth alone. A very small puppy may be a young breed, underweight, ill, or genuinely neonatal. Tell the veterinarian or rescue what you can observe instead:
- Are the eyes open, partly open, or closed?
- Can the puppy stand and walk, or does it crawl and fall?
- Are the ears upright or folded?
- Are baby teeth visible?
- Is the coat dry and clean, or matted, wet, or covered with fleas?
- Does the puppy respond normally to sound and gentle touch?
Record these observations without turning them into a diagnosis. A professional can combine them with weight, examination findings, and local information about whether a mother dog may be nearby.
Do not guess what to feed
Feeding is the area where well-meant improvisation can cause immediate harm. The correct food, amount, interval, and method depend on age, body condition, temperature, swallowing ability, and illness. Do not force food or liquid into a frightened, cold, weak, or poorly responsive puppy.
If the puppy appears newborn or orphaned
Ask an emergency veterinarian or experienced rescue professional what to feed before offering anything. VCA identifies commercial canine milk replacer for orphaned newborn puppies. Cow’s milk and goat’s milk are inadequate substitutes. A product label cannot account for a puppy that is chilled, dehydrated, injured, or unable to swallow, so follow both professional instructions and the label when feeding is approved.

Published neonatal schedules vary because they address different puppies and circumstances. VCA describes six or more feedings per day and approximately every four hours for some small or weak puppies; another VCA feeding article describes every two to four hours during the first week. Best Friends describes newborn puppies as needing feeds every two to three hours around the clock. This variation is why you should not create a schedule for an unknown found puppy.
If the puppy is older and alert
An older puppy may be able to eat an appropriate solid diet, but the overnight decision still belongs with the professional you reach. Ask whether to offer a small amount of food, what type, and whether water is appropriate. If the puppy is vomiting, very weak, chilled, or not swallowing normally, do not put food or liquid in its mouth unless a veterinarian directs you to do so.
If a professional directs bottle-feeding
Use hand-feeding only after a veterinarian or rescue worker has assessed the situation or given clear instructions. A puppy can aspirate liquid into its lungs when the nipple flow is too fast, the position is wrong, or the puppy is too weak to swallow.
- Use an animal nursing bottle and nipple intended for puppies if the professional directs bottle-feeding. Ask the rescuer or clinic to demonstrate the equipment.
- Confirm the nipple flow. VCA emphasizes that the opening must allow drops rather than a stream; a fast flow increases aspiration risk.
- Hold the puppy belly-down in a natural nursing position, with the head level or only slightly elevated. Never feed a puppy on its back. Best Friends specifically warns against the back-lying position.
- Allow the puppy to suck at its own pace. Do not squeeze the bottle or force liquid into the mouth.
- Stop and call the professional immediately if milk comes from the nose, the puppy coughs, struggles to breathe, becomes limp, or cannot coordinate swallowing.
Do not attempt tube-feeding, syringe-feeding, or any other workaround unless a veterinary professional has trained you for that puppy. Those methods can deliver liquid into the airway or cause injury when performed incorrectly.

Monitor the puppy until transfer
One person should remain responsible for observation. Write down the time you found the puppy, every call you make, changes in breathing or alertness, urination or stool you notice, anything offered, and whether it was swallowed or vomited. This record helps the clinic or shelter make faster decisions.

- Keep bedding dry and the container secure.
- Do not repeatedly wake or handle the puppy just to test it; observe quietly.
- Keep your phone available in case the clinic or animal-control officer calls back.
If the puppy’s condition worsens, use the emergency pathway immediately. Do not wait for the next scheduled call or for a shelter’s doors to open.
Prepare a useful handoff for the shelter, rescue, or veterinarian
When a professional accepts the puppy, provide facts rather than guesses:
- Exact or approximate location where you found it.
- Date and time found, and how long it may have been alone.
- Whether you saw a mother dog, littermates, traffic hazards, or other animals nearby.
- Observable signs such as coughing, discharge, wounds, diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, or coldness.
- Anything the puppy may have eaten or drunk, including the amount and time.
- Any warming, feeding, or handling performed after receiving professional instructions.
- Photos of the location or puppy if animal control requested them.
Do not present an estimated age, breed, illness, or ownership status as fact. Ask the receiving organization about its stray-hold, reunification, and medical-intake procedures. Local rules determine what happens next.

| Mistake | Why it is risky | Safer approach |
|---|---|---|
| Waiting for the shelter without calling anyone | The puppy may need treatment or an approved after-hours location. | Call animal control, an emergency clinic, a shelter, or a rescue and follow the local plan. |
| Assuming a tiny puppy is a newborn | Size does not establish age, and newborn care differs from older-puppy care. | Describe developmental signs and let a professional set the care plan. |
| Giving cow’s or goat’s milk | VCA says these are inadequate substitutes for canine milk replacer. | Ask what, if anything, to feed and use an approved canine product only when directed. |
| Feeding a cold, weak puppy by force | Swallowing may be impaired, raising aspiration risk. | Contact a veterinarian and provide only the warming and feeding support it directs. |
| Feeding on the back or squeezing a bottle | Liquid can enter the airway. | Use the belly-down nursing position and controlled nipple flow after instruction. |
| Placing the puppy directly on a heating pad | Burns, overheating, and inability to escape the heat are possible. | Use gentle, wrapped warmth with monitoring and professional advice. |
| Introducing the puppy to household pets | Unknown disease status and stress can endanger every animal. | Maintain physical separation until a professional advises otherwise. |
What to have ready if a professional approves supplies
A rescue may be able to provide equipment, so ask before buying anything. If a veterinarian or rescue directs neonatal care, it may specify an animal nursing bottle and nipple and a commercial canine puppy milk replacer. These items are conditional tools for an identified feeding plan, not a universal starter kit for every found puppy.
For the immediate holding period, the essentials are simpler: a secure ventilated container, clean dry bedding, towels, a way to provide monitored gentle warmth, and a phone with the relevant local numbers. Do not let a shopping trip postpone a veterinary call or transport.
A simple decision path for the night
- Call. Contact local animal control, an emergency veterinary clinic, a shelter, or a rescue and ask for an after-hours plan.
- Check for danger signs. If breathing, consciousness, injury, seizures, severe weakness, or marked coldness is abnormal, go through the emergency clinic’s instructions immediately.
- Contain. Place the puppy in a quiet, escape-proof area away from pets, children, traffic, and hazards.
- Warm gently. Keep it dry and provide monitored warmth; avoid rapid rewarming and direct high heat.
- Feed only with direction. Do not force food or liquid. If hand-feeding is approved, follow the demonstrated position, nipple flow, product, and schedule.
- Record and transfer. Note observations and care, then give the puppy and that information to the designated professional as soon as possible.
The safest overnight plan is therefore not a one-size-fits-all feeding timetable. It is rapid contact with local professionals, careful containment, conservative warming, and immediate escalation when the puppy’s condition is abnormal.
