Watch lions from inside your vehicle or from a viewing area the park has specifically designated. Follow the destination’s current rules and your guide’s or ranger’s instructions; keep doors and windows closed where required; stay on authorized roads; and never feed, tease, touch, or try to approach a lion. Use binoculars or a zoom lens to see more without closing the distance.
How can I safely observe lions on a safari?
Start by checking the official visitor rules for the specific park or reserve you plan to visit. Rules differ by destination, and there is no single minimum viewing distance that applies to every safari. The National Park Service (NPS) notes that wildlife-viewing distances vary by park and advises visitors to use binoculars or a zoom lens rather than move closer. Its general guidance is: “In general, if animals react to your presence you are too close.” NPS: 7 Ways to Safely Watch Wildlife
- Stay inside your vehicle unless the park permits you to exit in a designated area.
- Keep doors and windows closed if the destination requires it, and never lean out or stand through a sunroof where prohibited.
- Remain on authorized roads and follow guide, ranger, and park-staff directions.
- Do not feed, touch, tease, call to, or otherwise disturb lions or other wildlife.
- Use optics to observe, and give wildlife more space if it reacts to your presence.
Why do rules vary by safari destination?
“Safari” can mean different kinds of visits, from driving in a national park to entering a managed safari zone. The rules for one place do not establish what is permitted elsewhere. For example, South African National Parks (SANParks) says visitors in most parks where dangerous animals pose a threat may leave vehicles only in designated areas. It also requires closed doors and prohibits any part of the body protruding from a window or sunroof. Fuji Safari Park, in Japan, requires visitors in its Safari Zone to lock doors and keep windows closed. These are destination-specific rules, not universal safari standards.
Check the current official guidance before your visit, including whether self-driving is allowed, where visitors may get out, what vehicle restrictions apply, and which roads are authorized. Follow staff instructions even if they are more restrictive than what you expected.

What should you do in and around the vehicle?
Stay inside unless an exit is explicitly permitted
Do not get out simply because a lion appears calm or is some distance away. In parks where visitors may exit only in designated places, wait until you reach one. SANParks visitor rules also say to keep doors closed and not let any part of your body protrude through a window or sunroof. In Fuji Safari Park’s Safari Zone, doors must be locked and windows kept closed. Apply the rules for the place you are visiting; these examples do not establish a rule for every safari.
Stay on authorized roads and follow staff directions
Do not drive off-road to improve a view or get closer. SANParks requires vehicles to stay on designated roads, while Fuji Safari Park directs visitors to remain on paved roads and follow ranger instructions. If a guide or ranger tells you to move, wait, or leave an area, comply promptly.

Keep driving attention on the road
Do not watch or photograph lions while driving. The NPS recommends stopping in designated pull-outs before focusing on wildlife; Fuji Safari Park also warns visitors not to use phones while driving or take their eyes off the road. Pull over only where the destination allows it and where stopping is safe.
How can you get a better view without approaching?
Bring binoculars or use a camera’s zoom instead of asking a driver to close the gap or moving toward a lion. These tools help you see details while maintaining distance. They do not make it acceptable to ignore road, vehicle, or wildlife-viewing rules. If a lion approaches your vehicle, follow the destination’s instructions and your guide’s or ranger’s directions; there is no universal response procedure established across safari settings.

What should you never do around lions?

- Do not provoke or intentionally disturb animals. The NPS warns that wildlife can be unpredictable when disturbed or surprised; SANParks also prohibits intentional disturbance.
- Do not touch, call to, or try to attract a lion. Observe quietly from the permitted viewing area or vehicle.
- Do not assume a lion’s behavior means it is safe to approach. If an animal reacts to your presence, the NPS guidance is that you are too close.
