A small sanitary trim can help keep loose fur around a long-haired cat’s hindquarters from catching stool. First check whether the problem is loose, dirty hair or a tight mat: clean attached stool gently, but leave mats and close-to-skin trimming to a veterinarian or experienced groomer. Stop if your cat resists, and contact a veterinarian if scooting or abnormal skin signs continue.
Check the area before you reach for grooming tools
Lift the tail gently and look for stool caught in fur, tangles or mats, and any redness or irritation. Feces stuck to the coat can cause scooting, but scooting without an obvious fur problem may have another cause. The PetMD guide to cats dragging their bottoms recommends veterinary attention when the behavior persists; the ASPCA’s grooming guidance also recommends checking the area during routine grooming.

Clean stool gently; do not pull at it
If stool is attached to the hair, soften and wipe it away with a warm, damp cloth. PetMD also lists pet-safe shampoo or wipes as cleaning options. Avoid tugging: if the material is painful, stuck close to the skin, or will not come away gently, ask a veterinarian or groomer for help.

VCA Animal Hospitals’ coat-care guidance says, “Only use clippers to remove mats — never scissors.” Mats can sit close against skin, so even an apparently small cut with scissors can injure the cat. That guidance is not a reason to attempt close clipping at home: leave mats to someone equipped to handle them safely.

Keep routine coat care manageable
Regular inspection and brushing can reduce tangles before they become difficult mats. The suggested frequency varies by coat and source: the ASPCA recommends grooming long-haired indoor cats every few days, while VCA advises daily brushing for long, silky, or curly coats. Check your cat often and ask your veterinary team what schedule suits its coat and tolerance.

Stop if trimming is difficult or your cat resists
Do not continue if your cat struggles, becomes distressed, or the fur is too close to delicate skin for you to see what you are doing. A veterinary team or cat-experienced groomer can perform a sanitary clip or remove mats more safely. VCA recommends professional help when a cat does not tolerate mat care at home, injury is a concern, or mats are large or widespread.

Know when the problem needs a veterinarian
Grooming will not address every cause of scooting or poor hygiene. Contact a veterinarian for repeated scooting, anal redness or swelling, bleeding, a lump or mass, or rice-like segments near the anus, which may be tapeworm segments. A string or tissue protruding from the anus needs urgent veterinary attention; do not pull on it. See PetMD’s guidance on scooting and the ASPCA grooming tips.
If your cat repeatedly cannot reach or keep its hindquarters clean, mention it to the veterinarian. Obesity, arthritis, and other painful or mobility-limiting conditions can make grooming difficult; a veterinary team can assess the cause without assuming the cat is simply neglecting its coat.
