A warble is a botfly larva developing beneath a cat’s skin. If you find a lump with a small central hole, contact a veterinarian promptly; do not squeeze it or try to remove the larva yourself. Seizures, blindness, unusual behavior, or difficulty breathing require emergency veterinary care.
What is a warble in a cat?
A warble is the larval stage of a Cuterebra botfly, a North American parasite associated with rabbits and rodents. Cats are accidental hosts, not the parasite’s preferred host. The larva may develop under the skin or, less commonly, migrate into other tissues. Despite the name “wolf worm,” it is not an intestinal worm.

Adult flies lay eggs near host habitats. A cat may encounter larvae while investigating a burrow or hunting prey. Larvae can enter through body openings such as the nose or mouth and migrate before settling beneath the skin. A larva may remain there for several weeks before leaving to pupate. Warbles do not ordinarily spread directly from one cat to another. MSD Veterinary Manual and the Companion Animal Parasite Council describe this life cycle.

What does a warble look like?
The typical sign is a soft or firm swelling beneath the skin with a small central breathing pore. It often appears around the head or neck. You may also notice matted fur, repeated licking or scratching, discharge, or a sore where a larva has left. The lump can resemble an abscess or a foreign-body reaction, and infection may not be obvious at first.

MSD reports that second-instar larvae measure 5–15 mm; this is a description of larval size, not a way to diagnose a lump at home. CAPC describes a common cyst opening as 2–4 mm. A hole’s size alone cannot confirm what caused it. A cavity may become infected after the larva exits. VCA Animal Hospitals also describes skin lesions and other possible signs.
When is a wolf worm an emergency?
Most visible skin warbles need prompt veterinary assessment, but certain signs can indicate uncommon, more serious migration into respiratory, eye, or nervous-system tissues.

How do veterinarians diagnose a warble?
A larva visible in a characteristic swelling with a breathing pore is highly suggestive. A veterinarian examines the lesion and determines whether it is a warble or another problem, such as an abscess or foreign body. Do not probe the opening or try to check for a larva yourself.

When internal migration is suspected, diagnosis can be more difficult. Depending on the signs, a veterinarian may recommend imaging such as CT or MRI or investigate respiratory or neurologic problems. The appropriate work-up depends on the cat’s condition and the tissue involved.
How is a botfly larva removed?
For a skin warble, veterinary care focuses on removing the larva carefully and intact, then flushing and cleaning the wound. The veterinarian may need to debride damaged tissue or perform surgery; medication may be needed if infection is present. Care for suspected internal migration is case-specific and should be directed by a veterinarian.

The MSD Veterinary Manual’s clinical guidance is direct: “Cuterebra larvae should be removed in one piece and should not be squeezed.” Squeezing or rupturing the larva can leave material behind and trigger inflammation or secondary infection. Do not squeeze the lump, use tweezers or tools, or apply home remedies to force the larva out. Ask the clinic how soon your cat should be seen; seek emergency care for the signs listed above.
After removal, a recovery cone may help if your cat is licking or scratching an itchy site, but it is optional aftercare—not a treatment for the infestation. Follow the veterinarian’s wound-care instructions and contact the clinic if the area worsens or your cat seems unwell.

Can you prevent warbles in cats?
The clearest prevention is reducing exposure: limit hunting and access to rabbit or rodent burrows, and check cats that go outdoors for unusual swellings. No Cuterebra-specific preventive product is established as a labeled solution in the cited guidance; ordinary dewormers should not be assumed to prevent warbles.
Risk timing depends on location. MSD describes opportunistic cases as most common in late summer and early autumn. CAPC notes that emergence may occur year-round in some warmer areas, while cooler regions tend to see a summer and early-fall pattern. Local conditions matter, so do not rely on one universal calendar to rule out a warble.
