How to Safely Walk Your Dog in Winter

Winter walks should be adapted to your dog and the conditions. Watch for cold stress, protect paws, avoid ice and chemicals, and clean your dog after outings.

There is no single temperature or walk length that is safe for every dog. Plan around your dog’s size, age, coat, health and comfort, as well as wind, precipitation and the route. Keep the outing easy to shorten, watch for signs of cold stress, and clean your dog’s paws and coat when you get home.

Decide whether conditions suit your dog

Dogs vary in how well they tolerate cold. Small, young, older, underweight, short-coated or medically vulnerable dogs may need extra caution; a dog’s acclimation to cold also matters. Consider wind and precipitation, not just the temperature, and be prepared to make the walk shorter or skip it if your dog is uncomfortable. Cornell’s winter safety guidance and its January 29, 2021 expert article emphasize individual tolerance rather than a universal safe temperature or duration.

Before leaving, consider your dog’s health and coat, the weather, and whether the route is icy or treated with salt or de-icer. Choose an outing you can monitor and end promptly; gear does not make prolonged exposure safe.

Recognize when your dog is too cold

Turn back and move your dog to a warm, dry place if you notice shivering, whining, a hunched posture, a tucked tail, paw lifting, reluctance to walk or sudden anxiety. Cornell veterinarian Brian Collins says, “If a dog is picking up its feet or seems reluctant to walk this may be a sign that he/she is too cold.”

Prolonged cold exposure can lead to frostbite or hypothermia. If you suspect either, Cornell advises seeking veterinary attention immediately.

Protect paws and choose practical gear

Booties or a paw protectant approved by your veterinarian may help shield paws from cold, snow and treated surfaces. Look for booties that fit securely without interfering with walking, feel comfortable to your dog and are manageable to put on. A coat or sweater may help a small, older or thin-coated dog; choose coverage and fit suited to your dog. These are optional protections, not a reason to stay out longer than your dog can tolerate.

Avoid ice, salt and winter chemicals

Keep your dog leashed on snow and ice, and never walk across a frozen pond or lake. Avoid treated snow where possible: road salt and de-icers can irritate paws and may be harmful if swallowed. Antifreeze containing ethylene glycol can be deadly. Keep your dog from licking treated surfaces or paws, and store winter chemicals securely. Cornell’s guidance and the ASPCA’s ice-melt safety advice cover these hazards.
