For a beginner, the most reliable planted aquarium setup is a freshwater tank built around hardy plants, manageable lighting and a filter that is fully cycled before fish are added. You do not need injected CO2 to grow many easy plants. Choose the tank and its location first, then prepare the substrate and hardscape, plant, fill with conditioned water, run the equipment, and test the water until the filter is ready for livestock.
Plan the tank around its finished size
Choose a level, sturdy stand in a spot away from direct sunlight, heaters, and draughts. Sunlight and nearby heat can make temperature and algae management harder. Make sure there is convenient access to power and water, and leave room to work around the aquarium.

Plan for the weight of the complete setup—not just the empty tank. Aquarium Co-Op estimates a fully set-up aquarium at nearly 10 pounds per gallon after water, substrate, equipment, and decorations are included; treat that as a rough planning reminder, not a structural rating. Larger aquariums are generally less susceptible to water and temperature fluctuations, according to the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA). Choose fish based on their adult size and needs, not the size of juveniles at the shop.

Choose equipment and plants that work together
Buy equipment for the tank’s dimensions and intended livestock rather than assuming one specification fits every aquarium. A basic setup needs a suitable filter, aquarium heater if required by the chosen animals, planted-aquarium light, timer, water conditioner, and tests for ammonia and nitrite. A thermometer is useful for checking temperature. Planting tweezers and pruning scissors are optional conveniences.

Begin with hardy plants suited to the tank’s light, substrate, and water conditions. Anubias and Java fern can be attached to wood or rock; do not bury their rhizomes in substrate. Swords and many cryptocoryne rely more on nutrients around their roots. Taller plants usually suit the back of the aquarium, with shorter growth toward the front. Aquarium Co-Op and OATA describe these and other beginner plant choices; confirm the needs of each species before buying.
Set a conservative lighting schedule
Use a timer so the light period is consistent. OATA gives 6–8 hours a day as a general range and notes that some lights with gradual ramp-up and ramp-down periods may run for 10–12 hours in total. Tropica recommends six hours daily for the first 2–3 weeks, then increasing to 8–10 hours. These are different starting recommendations, not a single universal prescription: adjust to the light, plants, and tank response. More light is not automatically better, and excessive lighting can make algae harder to manage.

- Maintenance tips: In order to extend tool life and keep performing well, we recommend that you rinse off the saltwater attached to the tools surface and then wipe up to keep dry.
Choose a substrate approach
There is no one best substrate for every planted tank. Inert aquarium gravel or coarse sand is a forgiving option because it does not supply a large load of nutrients to the water. Root-feeding plants can be supported with root tabs. A planted substrate can supply nutrients around roots, but nutrient-rich soils may release nutrients into the water, so they require attention to water quality and algae.
Match the substrate to the plants and follow the product directions. Aquarium Co-Op describes 2–3 inches as a typical planted-tank depth, but the appropriate depth depends on the substrate, layout, and plants. Water-column fertilizer may be useful for plants that take up nutrients through their leaves; it is not a substitute for considering the needs of root feeders.

Decide whether CO2 belongs in the plan
Injected CO2 is optional for many low-tech aquariums. OATA notes that many low-tech setups grow well without added carbon, although some plant species struggle without it. If you choose demanding plants, additional CO2 may help, but CO2, stronger light, and fertilizer need to be balanced and monitored. Excess CO2 can affect oxygen availability and pH, so it is not a beginner requirement to add by default.
Set up the aquarium in order
- Prepare the tank and materials. Rinse the tank, substrate, and hardscape with water only; never use soap or household cleaners. Check the substrate maker’s instructions, since not every substrate should be rinsed. Inspect rocks and wood and arrange them before filling.
- Add the substrate and hardscape. Spread the substrate to the depth appropriate for its type and your plants. Set rocks and wood firmly in place while the tank is empty, then adjust the layout before planting.
- Partially fill and plant. Add some dechlorinated water carefully to make planting easier. Put taller plants toward the back and shorter ones toward the front. Secure suitable rhizome plants and mosses to hardscape rather than burying them; place root-feeding plants in the substrate.
- Fill without disturbing the layout. Pour water gently onto a plate, bag, or other clean surface to reduce substrate disruption. Use a water conditioner according to its label to treat tap water.
- Start and check the equipment. Run the filter and heater, if needed, and confirm that water is circulating and the heater is operating as intended. Set the light on a timer. Test the water as the aquarium begins to mature.
Cycle the filter before adding fish
Cycling is the process by which a filter develops a mature population of bacteria that process fish waste. A new filter does not start with that mature biological capacity. Simply letting the water sit for a day or two—or waiting a fixed number of days—does not establish that the aquarium is ready.

During a fishless cycle, ammonia is dosed in a measured way to feed the developing biological filter. Follow a reliable cycling guide and test ammonia and nitrite as the process progresses; it can take several weeks. OATA’s planted-aquarium guidance says ammonia and nitrite should fall to zero and remain there before stocking continues. Do not add fish just because the water looks clear or the equipment has been running for 24–48 hours.

Fish-in cycling is possible but requires careful monitoring and guidance to protect the animals from toxic ammonia and nitrite. Beginners should avoid treating fish as a way to start a cycle. During the grow-in period, keep the light controlled, test the water, and make appropriate partial water changes. Tropica recommends frequent water changes during the initial weeks and delaying fish for 3–4 weeks while plants establish; that is useful grow-in guidance, but filter maturity and test results—not a calendar alone—determine when livestock can be added.

Add livestock gradually and maintain the balance
When ammonia and nitrite consistently test at zero, introduce livestock gradually rather than adding the full planned population at once. Continue testing as the filter adjusts to the new waste load, and choose animals compatible with the tank’s mature size and water conditions.
Remove damaged leaves and prune growth as needed. If algae develops or plants struggle, review the light period and intensity, plant nutrient supply, and maintenance routine before making several changes at once. Dense planting can help plants use available nutrients, but it does not remove the need for appropriate stocking and upkeep.
