An outdoor cat can learn to use a litter box, but the transition works best when you make indoor life appealing and give the cat a clean, easy-to-reach box it is willing to use. Bring the cat indoors gradually, let its behavior guide adjustments, and treat accidents as clues—not misbehavior. There is no established timetable that works for every cat.
Make indoor life feel safe and rewarding
Start by feeding your cat indoors and pairing indoor time with play. Gradually extend the time it spends inside rather than abruptly imposing a schedule. As the transition progresses, longer indoor periods—or keeping the cat inside at night—can help it become accustomed to being indoors. VCA describes a gentle transition as a way to help an outdoor cat settle into indoor life (VCA Animal Hospitals); the Humane Society also recommends making indoor time more appealing (Humane Society).

Give the cat reasons to explore
Provide places to perch, hide and scratch, and offer toys that encourage stalking, chasing and pouncing. Rotate toys and watch which spaces and activities the cat chooses. Adapt the environment to those preferences rather than assuming every cat will enjoy the same setup.
Set up a box the cat can comfortably use
Put a roomy, easy-to-enter litter box in a quiet, accessible location. Choose a spot where the cat can see people or other pets approaching and does not feel cornered. Keep the box away from food and water. ASPCA guidance says most cats prefer unscented clumping litter with a medium-to-fine texture, but individual preferences vary; if the cat avoids the box, offer a different litter or setup and observe what it uses (ASPCA).

Keep the route and box inviting
Scoop at least once a day. In a home with multiple cats, ASPCA recommends one litter box per cat plus one extra. More than one box, or a box on each floor, can also make access easier. Avoid placing a box where a closed door, noise or another animal could prevent the cat from reaching it comfortably.
Build the habit without forcing it
As indoor time increases, keep the box available and let the cat investigate it. Do not carry the cat to the box, place it inside to demonstrate, or punish it for eliminating elsewhere. ASPCA cautions that forcing a cat into the box can increase its dislike of it. There is no source-established number of days or weeks by which every outdoor cat should learn; adjust the transition to the individual cat instead of treating a fixed deadline as a test of success.

Use accidents to find what needs to change
Clean a soiled area with a pet-specific enzymatic cleaner, then review the setup and the cat’s access to it. Check whether the box is clean, easy to enter and in a comfortable location; consider whether its design or litter texture and scent may be putting the cat off. If you change one factor at a time, it is easier to see what the cat accepts.

When to contact a veterinarian
A new elimination problem can have a medical cause, so arrange veterinary assessment if your cat suddenly changes its toileting habits, seems unwell, or continues to avoid the box. If a health issue is ruled out and the problem persists after you have addressed the basic setup, ask your veterinarian about help from a qualified feline behavior professional. Confining a cat for days or weeks without addressing why it avoids the box is not a substitute for finding the cause.
